235 million profiles of Instagram, TikTok and YouTube users leaked online

235 million profiles of Instagram, TikTok and YouTube users have leaked online following a massive database that was left unsecured online by Social Data. The Hong-Kong based Social Data provides data sets on influencers from various social media platforms to marketers. According to Comparitech researchers who have published a full report on the data breach, the leaked database contains names, contact details, personal information, pictures, detailed account insights and more such private data sets.

The technique used to collate such a large database is called web scraping wherein an automated script collects bulk data from website and web pages. These 235 million user profiles on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube are public which is why companies like Social Data can acquire all the personal information that users put out on their social media accounts.

The report details as many as 192,392,954 user profiles from Instagram, 42,129,799 profiles from TikTok and 3,955,892 user records from YouTube as part of the large data sets leaked online. Comparitech says, “We do not know how long the data was exposed for prior to our discovery of it on August 1. We also do not know whether any unauthorized parties accessed it during the exposure. Our honeypot experiments show that hackers can find and attack unsecured databases within hours of being exposed.”

Are the leaked databases secured now?

After Comparitech reached out to Social Data to disclose the incident, the company acknowledged the exposed databases and took it down. Having said that, it is currently unknown as to for how long were these unsecured databases lying around and who might have accessed it in the time till it was taken offline.

What all user data was left exposed?

The researches found out that the databases left unsecured by Social Data contained data sets from a now-defunct company, Deep Social. Interestingly, Deep Social was banned by Facebook in 2018 for using their APIs to scrape data from the user’s profile. Subsequently, Deep Social terminated its operations and Social Data has denied any connections between the two companies, both of them involved in data scraping of social media influencers.

As per Comparitech, the four databases contained details about user’s profile name, real name, profile picture, account insights like the number of followers, likes, the growth rate of followers, engagement rate, and other demographic data of the audience along with a timestamp of the last post. Moreover, around 20% of the samples collected by the researchers contained either the mobile number or email address.

These datasets can be used to target users with marketing and phishing campaigns, making many users accounts vulnerable to a “mass attack”. Meanwhile, the pictures collected from these accounts can be used for facial recognition systems and can also be used to create fake accounts.

While social media companies have often barred data scraping companies to operate on their platforms, the practice has not stopped data collecting firms from using a more modern approach and tools to collect data in bulk.

We recommend our readers to be on a lookout for any phishing or spam emails and malicious links that could provide further access to attackers. In fact, Google has removed 25 apps from the Play Store for phishing Facebook log-in details. You can read more about that here.

Google Chrome Kaleidoscope will help you watch all your streaming services in one place

It looks like Google is working on a one-stop hub for all your OTT services and streaming needs in Chrome, called Kaleidoscope. Those interested in accessing the service can check it out on chrome://kaleidoscope/. However, remember that a user needs to be on the developer-focused Chrome Canary. Note that the feature is currently not functional. If you do manage to log onto the page, you will notice three OTT providers on it - Netflix, Prime Videos and Disney+. It also has the caption “All your shows in one place” above the icons of the three services. You can check out the details on ChromeStory.

It looks like the Kaleidoscope home page will let you check the services you are subscribed to and become a one-stop hub for all your streaming needs. So if you want to see if a new episode of your favourite show has been released or simply want to start streaming something new, you don't need to log onto a service individually and can simply log into one place to find what you are looking for.

According to 9to5Google, “Kaleidoscope could offer Discover-like recommendations of what to watch next from selecting streaming providers. Those recommendations could appear when you open a New Tab Page. This might help in showing you more content that you wouldn’t necessarily find by aimlessly scrolling through the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Disney+”.

This could be Google's way of helping you discover what to watch next. It is possible that based on your watch history, or genres you like, Kaleidoscope could recommend something new for you to watch helping you save those hours spent searching for something new to binge. Netflix itself is testing a shuffle button to help users discover something new to watch. You can learn more about Netflix’s shuffle feature here.

It isn’t clear when or how Kaleidoscope will be released to the public and how many streaming services will be on board with it. It also remains to be seen whether users will be able to rent or purchase movies digitally as they can on services like Google Play Movies, YouTube, Apple TV and more. Internationally, users can also rent or purchase movies digitally via Amazon. How such a service will work with conflict of interest and business decisions remains to be seen.

In India, we have seen Xiaomi’s PatchWall UI running on its TVs present content first and then the service provider in the background. So you will see rows of movies and TV shows and it is only when you click on it that it will redirect you to a service provider like Zee5 or SonyLiv and more. This is an interesting way of giving content priority over the service. You can read more about PatchWall here.

Apple looking to cut costs on the iPhone 12 by changing the battery design: Report

It looks like Apple is facing high production costs on the iPhone 12 due to the 5G hardware that the phone will support. It looks like Apple is looking to offset this cost by reducing the cost involved in other components. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, as reported by MacRumors, “adoption of Sub-6GHz 5G technology will increase Apple's costs by $75–$85, while millimetre wave technology will incur a $125–$135 cost for Apple, so the company is cutting costs on other components wherever it can”.

According to Kuo, the battery board is one place where apple will cut costs on the iPhone 12. Apple is expected to move to a simpler and smaller design with fewer layers for the battery of the upcoming smartphone. According to MacRumors, “The hybrid hard and soft battery board for the ‌iPhone 12‌ will reportedly be 40–50% cheaper than the equivalent part in the iPhone 11 series, although this component is likely a small contributor to Apple's overall costs.”

The report goes on to say that the 2021 iPhones will have a purely soft board design which will reduce the cost by an additional 30-40% when compared to the iPhone 12.

Information circulating the internet also suggests that Apple could exclude the charger and the earphones from the box of the iPhone 12, reducing the cost of the device further.

Apple isn’t the only company facing rising production costs due to 5G hardware. All smartphone makers manufacturing 5G devices have seen an increase in the cost of production. Apple is also looking to launch a 4G only iPhone 12 in 2021 and it is possible that this phone will be targeted at those markets where 5G hardware isn’t ready. It looks like India could be one of those markets as Apple is already looking to produce the iPhone 12 in India. You can read more about that here. You can also check out everything we know about the iPhone 12 here.

If you are an iPhone user and want to install iOS 14 public beta, you can follow the steps here.
