Apple might announce iPhone 12 launch date this week

Apple is expected to announce the date where it will reveal the iPhone 12 at some point in the coming days, perhaps this week. This information isn’t through a leak, but rather a postulated guess on the part of Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman, who in his tweet said that Apple is likely to announce a date on which they will announce the iPhone 12.

Typically, Apple would send out invites for the iPhone launch 2 weeks prior to the event. This is to give journalists and attendees time to figure out travel plans to the Apple Campus in Cupertino, however, given that there is still no cure or vaccine for COVID-19, Apple is likely to hold a virtual event, just like they did for WWDC 2020. This means there’s really no reason to send out an invitation so far ahead in time. However, Mark Gurman’s tweet comes in the face of the months of rumours that Apple is expected to announce a new iPad and the Apple Watch Series 6 this month, with the iPhone 12 being launched later next month. Jon Prosser, another prominent Apple leakster with a track record of getting launches right has also tweeted that Apple is readying to launch a new iPad and the Apple Watch Series 6, and according to him, Apple already has the press release scheduled to go out on September 8.

I wouldn’t get too excited about rumors of new Apple products appearing this week. More likely I think: an announcement of the upcoming (of course virtual) September iPhone/Apple Watch event.

— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) September 6, 2020

Apple press release is currently scheduled for Tuesday (September 8) at 9:00am EST — though, I should note that it’s not locked in until the press has been briefed, day of. I’ll tweet early that morning to update you if it changes.

— Jon Prosser (@jon_prosser) September 6, 2020

Apple typically launches the new iPhones at a dedicated event in September, however, this year, things have not gone according to plan. The COVID-19 pandemic had apparently caused delays in the testing of the 5G radio, besides all the disruptions in the supply chain, which has eventually led to a delayed iPhone event. This year, Apple is rumoured to be launching four models, two for the iPhone 12 and two for the iPhone 12 Pro series. Up until now, its always been the Pro series that’s received two sizes, but given the popularity of the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 lineup, it makes sense why Apple would want to offer the iPhone 12 in two sizes as well.

21-year-old reportedly commits suicide due to PUBG Mobile ban: Report

It looks like the ban on PUBG Mobile is taking its toll. According to a report by PTI, a 21-year-old student in West Bengal’s Nadia district committed suicide for not being able to play the game. As per the police, the student was found hanging in his house on Friday.

PTI’s report notes that after he had his breakfast, the victim went to his room. However, when his mother went to call him for lunch, his room was locked from inside. After the student did not respond to calls to open the door, his mother called the neighbours who broke into the room and found him hanging from the ceiling. The mother notes that her son was apparently frustrated for not being able to play PUBG Mobile.

After talking to the family members, the police say that the student killed himself for not being able to play the game, which was blocked by the government last week.

A 21-year-old student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his home in West Bengal's Nadia district as he was frustrated over not being able to play PUBG: Police

— Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) September 6, 2020

To recall, the Government of India banned PUBG Mobile, PUBG Mobile Lite and 116 other games. The move came a couple of weeks after the government banned 59 apps including TikTok. All the apps were banned citing security concerns as all of them were linked to China. After the initial ban of 59 apps, there was some debate whether PUBG Mobile would be banned as there was some confusion over the origins of the game as the parent company of PUBG, Krafton Game Union, is South Korean and is responsible for the PC and console versions of the game. However, the mobile version of the game was developed and published by Tencent.

This is possibly the first death that has been attributed to the game post its ban in India. Prior to the ban, a number of deaths were linked to the game. This ranged from suicide to strokes. Players who are feeling depressed following the banning of the game are advised to seek help and support. Then may also consider playing any of the many alternatives.

Googles Lo-Fi Player now lets you create live music on your browser

If you love music but really don’t know how to play an instrument or even program music, Google’s got you covered. The search engine giant recently released the Google Magenta Lo-Fi player that you can load up in your browser and start creating music right away. The project was created by an intern at Google and looks really retro with the 8-bit graphics and aesthetic. All you need to do to start making music is load up the player and start clicking on the various instruments you see on screen. It really is as easy as that. Objects like the cat, piano, acoustic guitar and bass will allow you to customize different tracks and melodies.

Google's Low-Fi Player lets users play live music on their browsers

In a blog post, Google said, “We chose Lo-Fi Hip Hop because it’s a popular genre with relatively simple music structure. This limited flexibility helps ensure that the music always makes sense. We’re able to create something more like a “music generating room” than a musical instrument or composition tool.”

Google has incorporated several music machine learning models developed by the Magenta team to help users make the experience more novel and dynamic. Google has also transformed the  Lo-Fi Player into an interactive YouTube stream where instead of clicking on the various objects to make music, you simply type in the commands in the Live Chat. Google has also made the source code for the player available on GitHub.

You can play live music on your browser using Google's Lo-fi Player

This may not be world-changing but it really allows people to mess about with sounds and loops and who knows, this could actually push people into making more music. Check out the Lo-Fi Player, here.

In other Google news, we’ve got a handy and easy-to-follow guide on how you can activate Google Chrome’s Dark Mode on Android, iOS, Windows and Mac, right here. The search engine giant has also rolled out a new Saved tab on Google Maps to help you keep track of your favourite places. And finally, here is how you can recover your deleted photos on Google Photos.
