Everything We Got Out Of Ubisoft Forward - Second Edition

Earlier today, Ubisoft held the second edition of their online digital event, Ubisoft Forward, in an attempt to showcase more new upcoming games and provide updates on previously announced titles. Last time we witnessed the world premiere of Far Cry 6, starring Giancarlo Esposito as the primary antagonist amongst updates on other titles. Just like the previous press conference, we got some more cool new announcements during this pre-show as well including a Far Cry 3 based VR game, an Assassin’s Creed based Notre-Dame exploration game in VR, a space exploration VR game called AGOS and a 3v3 free-to-play roller-skating game called ROLLER CHAMPIONS. We also got a look at some of the new updates coming to The Crew 2, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, The Division 2 and For Honor.

With all that out of the way, let us now delve into the main show stuff.

Immortals Fenyx Rising

The first reveal at the event was for the much-awaited action-adventure game based on Greek mythology - Immortals Fenyx Rising. Formerly known as Gods & Monsters (teased at E3 2019), the game will see players donning the roles of Fenyx, a chosen demi-god, in a quest to save the Greek gods and reclaim their home from the deadliest Titan in Greek mythology, Typhon. The entire story will be narrated by the Titan Prometheus and Zeus, the king of the Gods. Players will get to create their own custom version of Fenyx and earn new weapons, cosmetics and unique abilities through progression. Thanks to the majestic wings of Daedalus, players will be able to glide through the vast and vibrantly colourful open-world and go air-borne to get an advantage during battles. Players will be facing off against deadly mythical beasts such as giant cyclopses, flying harpies and multi-armed Hekatonkheires to name just a few. Immortals Fenyx Rising will be out later this year, on 3 December 2020, on the current and next-gen consoles, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia and Windows PC via Epic Games Store and Uplay. Ubisoft has also released an 11-minute long in-depth walkthrough for the title which you can check out right below.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has to be one of Ubisoft’s worst kept secrets. After numerous leaks circulated around the internet for while the game finally made its official debut at the press conference. Originally released in 2003, the game set a distinct benchmark for any third-person action-adventure games to come in the later years. The “Remake” has been built from the ground up using the Anvil game engine (Assassin’s Creed Origins). And features new character models and cinematic sequences, updated combat and controls and comes with the original 1989 Prince of Persia game included. Players will be taking part in sword fights, parkouring their way through the palace and use the iconic dagger to freeze, reverse and move forward in time as they solve numerous puzzles, laden with deadly traps. Pre-ordering the game will grant players access to the original prince outfit, the original weapons set and a classic filter. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will be out early next year on 21 January 2021, on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC via Epic Games Store and UPlay.

Hyper Scape: Turbo Mode

Ubisoft’s latest fast-paced battle-royale game, Hyper Scape has announced a new limited-time mode intended to speed up gameplay. The Turbo mode will be offering only max-level loot throughout the futuristic streets of Neo-Arcadia, faster zone closure and faster health regeneration, enabling a faster path to victory. The new game mode is set to go live next week, on 15 September 2020.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege: Operation Shadow Legacy

Ubisoft’s 5v5 tactical multiplayer shooter, Rainbow Six Siege announced their new season - Operation Shadow Legacy, which is live now as we speak. As with every other season where they release new operators, this time we have Sam Fisher (code name: Zero), the iconic ex-CIA stealth master from the Splinter Cell series of games, as evident from the animated trailer above. The shooter will also be making its way onto the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later this year, offering up to 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. Players who own the game on the current-gen consoles will be getting this upgrade for free when they shift to the next-gen platform of the same family.  Adding on, Rainbows Six Siege has also announced their 2021 Summer World Cup with professional basketball player, Tony Parker as an ambassador.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game - Complete Edition

For the fifth reveal, we are getting a 2D arcade-style beat ‘em up videogame inspired by the popular comic book series and movie - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Previously delisted from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 digital stores in 2014 due to an expired licence, this new “Complete Edition” will be coming with all the original DLCs. You get to pick and choose between your favourite characters - Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Knives Chau, Stephen Stills and more, to face-off against Ramona’s league of seven evil exes in an attempt to win her heart. You can fight against killer robots and ninjas, level up and learn new abilities, take part in various mini-games and unlock tons of cool secret items. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game - Complete Edition will be out during Holiday season 2020 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia and Windows PC via Epic Games Store and UPlay.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Ubisoft gave us an update on some of the new content coming to Watch Dogs Legion ahead of its launch on 29 October 2020. Since the game is based in the city of London, the Resistance has welcomed popular British grime artist, Stormzy to be a part of the game. The game will be featuring a mission “Fall on my Enemies” where players can interact with the rapper and will be tasked to help him secure a broadcast for his “Heavy is the Head” album track in Central London.

Further, Ubisoft has announced that Aiden Pearce from the first Watch_Dogs game will be available as a fully playable character, post-launch. As part of a DLC for the game, players will be getting a whole new chapter centred around him, which will be included in the season pass as well. Adding on, we also got a more in-depth look at the all-new recruitment mechanics in Watch Dogs Legion, which you can check out right below.

Riders Republic

The final reveal at the event was for Riders Republic. A new massively extreme sports game that looks heavily inspired by the company’s Steep and Trials game franchises. The game offers numerous sports options to choose from including skiing, snowboarding, biking, wingsuiting and “rocket” wingsuiting. And features awe-inspiring locations that are set across the seven national parks in the United States. It features a career mode and an online multiplayer mode where each lobby will have 50 players racing it out against each other to be crowned the victor. Riders Republic will be out early next year on 25 February 2021 on the current and next-gen consoles, Google Stadia and Windows PC via Epic Games Store and UPlay. You can check out a game preview trailer for the same, right below.

And that was it for the second edition of Ubisoft Forward. With the end of Summer Game Fest late last month, we could have possibly seen the final game press conference of the year. Until The Game Awards in November that is. That being said, we could still be looking at more announcements and updates on our favourite games in the coming months. Although, only individually, and not as a full-fledged event. You can check out the highlights from the first edition of Ubisoft Forward here. Similarly, feel free to check out presentations from Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, Electronic Arts and Nacon which were all held in association with the Summer Game Fest within the last few months.

Google Play may soon allow P2P app sharing with nearby devices

Google Play may soon support peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing of apps to help with installing apps without consuming precious mobile data. A teardown of the Google Playstore app suggests the feature is in the works, and would allow Android users to share apps wirelessly with nearby devices.

The feature sounds quite similar to the new Nearby Share feature that Google rolled out for the Pixel smartphones which allows transfer of photos, videos and files with nearby devices, much like Apple’s AirDrop.

The teardown reveals the Google Playstore app will have a dedicated ‘Send Apps’ tab where users can choose the apps installed on their devices that can be shared with nearby devices. Further, the ‘My Apps and Games’ section may be renamed to ‘Manage apps and device’, and this is where the P2P app sharing options will reside.

Google Play P2P app sharing teardown

Credit: 9to5Google

Both parties will need to be on the Share Apps section of the PlayStore, and once both parties grant the necessary permissions, Google Play will automatically begin the P2P sharing process.

The feature, once rolled out to the masses would be particularly helpful in getting large apps and games installed without consuming mobile data. It would certainly make a smartphone reviewer’s life easy, while setting up a review unit. Having said that, the P2P app sharing feature will only allow transfer of free apps and games.

The teardown of the app was reported by 9to5Google, and further research by Android Police revealed Google is using a combination of Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi Direct to transfer the apps.

While all this sounds terribly exciting, the teardown does not reveal a launch date for the feature. But going by the looks of it, it should only be a matter of time. Having a P2P app sharing feature baked into the Play Store, will help bring down data consumption and reliance on third party apps.

Huawei smartphones to run on HarmonyOS starting 2021

Ever since Huawei was placed on the Entity List by the U.S. Government, the company has struggled to keep the impact on its business at a minimum. Up until now, the company has refrained from sharing any way forward for its smartphone business, however, we finally have some news from the company about its way forward with respect to the smartphones. Huawei, during its Developer Conference, announced that all its smartphones will run HarmonyOS starting 2021.

During its developer conference, Huawei has revealed that starting 2021, Huawei smartphones will run on HarmonyOS and not Android. Given that the company can no longer licence GMS, and hence not get access to any version of Android released after Android 10. Even though the company announced the release of EMUI 11 at their developer conference, it is still based on Android 10 and now Android 11, which started rolling out to devices recently. Huawei’s next challenge will be to lure developers to create apps for their ecosystem, which is definitely going to be an uphill challenge.

Huawei smartphones releasing in 2021 will run on HarmonyOS, ditching Android for good.

While the company may have its OS related issues sorted, the future of their smartphone business still faces grave uncertainty. The U.S. Government has tweaked its export laws in such a way that Huawei can no longer procure technologies that are created using American equipment or software. This effectively meant that TSMC, the manufacturer of the Kirin chipsets, can no longer supply Huawei with their flagship chips. Additionally, Samsung and LG just recently announced that they will no longer be supplying displays to Huawei for their smartphone. At this point, without a flagship chipset, a great display and Android, Huawei’s flagship devices will only have the Leica branded cameras to boast of, which may not be enough to keep customers enticed.

In addition to announcing that HarmonyOS would power the phones coming in 2021 from Huawei, the company also said that they would be Open-Sourcing HarmonyOS to be used in tablets, cars, watches etc. The company is also tying up with major appliance manufacturers in China to power their appliances using HarmonyOS.

OnePlus Watch tipped to feature circular display

The wearable market seems to be the next stop for OnePlus. Leaks have suggested that the company has been developing its own wearable for quite a while now and is tentatively called the OnePlus Watch. The latest leak hints at the shape of the dial. According to tipster, @MaxJmb, OnePlus will opt for a circular display instead of the squarish-shape found on wearables like the Apple Watch.

Many dont seem to understand it so I clarify it. The Watch is circular. WOTCH https://t.co/HkevfvMfgT

— Max J. (@MaxJmb) September 10, 2020

Late last month, multiple reports popped up that seemingly confirmed the existence of the OnePlus Watch. First, a device called the ‘OnePlus Watch appeared on the website of Indonesia’s regulatory body. The device reportedly had the model name W301GB. A few days later, a former OnePlus employee also said that the company has been considering the release of a smartwatch for quite a while now.

While details of the device are not yet known. It would be a safe bet to assume that the OnePlus Watch will offer hardware that is similar to the recently launched Oppo Watch. As such, the upcoming device may also run on Google’s WearOS platform and feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear chipset.

Besides OnePlus, Vivo is also tipped to launch a wearable simply called the Vivo Watch. The wearable is expected to sport a circular dial with an AMOLED panel. It is also tipped to offer a stainless steel body and a leather strap. The device is expected to offer water resistance of up to 5ATM and sport sensors to track heart rate, blood oxygen content and more. It is also tipped to feature NFC for contactless payments. Instead of WearOS, the Vivo Watch is expected to run a forked version of the company’s FunTouchOS, which itself is based on Android. The report adds that the Vivo Watch is tipped to offer a battery life of 18 days and should be priced at around 1000CNY, which is about Rs 10,700.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is official, will launch on January 21 next year

As we reported earlier, there has been a Prince of Persia remake swirling around for the past few years, and we finally got a full-blown confirmation yesterday at Ubisoft Forward. Yes, folks, we’re finally getting a remake of the classic Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The game that basically launched the Prince of Persia franchise back into the mainstream is getting a remake for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and will hit the platforms on January 21, 2021. In a report by Eurogamer, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake will also be playable on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X through backwards compatibility. In a world where we actually have a remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, along with Crash Bandicoot and more, it’s still a surprise to see Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remade for a new audience.

"No, no, no... that's not how it happened... let me try again." Thank you, Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune, for helping me to rewind time for real. #UbiForward #PrinceofPersiaRemake #timeisanoceaninastorm pic.twitter.com/IZVwrjL0R1

— Yuri Lowenthal (@YuriLowenthal) September 10, 2020

In our earlier report, we saw screenshots that were leaked from a Guatemalan retailer that showed off the release date, which was scheduled for November 2020, but from the recent announcement, we know that it is not true. The remake was on its way, but it is going to be released next year in January. But little did we know that Ubisoft Mumbai and Pune have been hard at work on the game for the past two years. This is the first title either studio has taken up lead development on, so we’re eagerly waiting to see what they can deliver. In the meantime, check out the trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake below.

In other gaming news, Microsoft has just revealed the launch date and price of the Xbox Series X and Series S. You can read more about that story here. Also, if you really want to dig deeper, we’ve also got a comparison between the two consoles, namely the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, right here.
