iPad 8th Gen announced: Price, specs, features and availability

Alongside the Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE and the iPad Air, Apple also announced the iPad 8th generation at the Time Flies event. The regular iPad is now a lot more powerful and starts from Rs 29,900 in India for the 32GB Wi-Fi variant. Here’s everything we know about the iPad 8 so far —

iPad 8th Generation Specs, features and accessories

The iPad 8th Gen runs on the Apple A12 Bionic chip, thus bringing the power of the Neural Engine to the iPad lineup for the first time and features a 10.2-inch Retina display and is available in 32GB and 128GB variants with either Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity.

The biggest upgrade in the iPad 8 is actually the processor inside. With the power of the Neural Engine, things should improve significantly, as would the use cases. Apple claimed a 40 per cent boost in performance over the previous generation, and even threw in a comparison with a similarly-priced Windows laptop claiming it’s twice as fast.

Yet, with all the new things under the hood, the iPad 8 looks nothing like the new iPad Air or the iPad Pro. It sticks to the old design with a TouchID-enabled Home button and thick, chonky bezels around the display. It’s also 0.29-inches thick and weighs 462 grams. The iPad 8 will be available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold.

There’s a single 8MP camera at the back while on the front, the iPad 8 gets a 1.2MP camera for FaceTime calls. This is where things are lacking a bit, and you won’t get the latest options that’s popular in the latest iPhones, but who shoots photos from an iPad anyway?

Apple promises a day-long battery life with a 32.4-watt-hour battery, that includes 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi, while on LTE that value dips to 9 hours.

As for accessories, we have bad news. The iPad 8 doesn’t support either the latest Apple Pencil or the Magic Keyboard. It does support the 1st-gen Apple Pencil though, which weirdly charges using the Lightning port, and it’s also a lot more useful with the latest iPadOS 14 update. Also, you can use the Apple smart keyboard with this, or opt for third-party solutions from brands like Logitech

iPad 8th Gen price and availability in India

The iPad 8 starts at Rs 29,900 for the 32GB variant with Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi+Cellular model starts from Rs 41,900. The 1st-gen Apple Pencil is priced Rs 8,500 while the Smart Keyboard is priced Rs 13,900. You can also purchase smart covers for the iPad for Rs 4,500 available in black, white, deep navy, cyprus green and pink citrus. Apple has not announced a release date for the iPad in India, but the company stated it would be available soon with Apple authorised retailers.

Apple A14 is the first commercial 5nm chip

While there was nothing on the upcoming new iPhones in last night’s Apple event, Apple did make time to talk up the Apple A14 SoC that powers the new iPad Air and historically, Apple has used the latest silicon for iPhones as well. It was indeed odd to hear about the Apple A14 SoC with the iPad Air, and not the iPhone 12 series but it shouldn’t make much of a difference as far as the processor is concerned, because Apple has always used the same silicon for iPhones and the iPad Air.

The new chip from Apple was more or less expected. It’s the annual refresh that debuts with the latest iPhone, only this time, Apple took the industry by surprise by moving to 5nm before Qualcomm or Samsung did. Huawei usually beats Apple to the announcements, but things aren’t going so well with the Chinese dragon. As a result, the Apple A14 SoC becomes the first commercially available 5nm chip.

40% Faster CPU, 30% Faster GPU

Apple A14 SoC is the first commercially available 5nm chip

How much of a difference does it make? The 5nm manufacturing node is smaller than the 7nm node Apple was using before, and this helped Apple decrease the die size further, even while adding more transistors. The result is of course better performance with lower power draw.

Funny thing is, Apple had to compare the performance of the new A14 chip to the two-year old A12 chip because that was the one powering the previous iPad, and claimed the A14  is 40 percent faster. The A14 CPU sticks to the 2+4 core config with two high performance cores and four efficiency cores. The clock speeds were not disclosed at the time of launch, but a six-month old Geekbench listing claims the A14 will breach the 3GHz mark. The leaked scores pegs the A14 to be more powerful than the Apple A12X SoC on the iPad Pro.

On the GPU side of things, it now has four cores and Apple claimed a good 30 per cent boost in performance as compared to the A12 SoC.

Even more impressive is the jump in AI performance. The Neural Engine in the A14 has sixteen cores, capable of delivering 11TOPS throughput, which is double the performance of the A12.

What’s not impressive? Becoming the first to move to 5nm and not talk about power efficiency at all! Given that a primary objective in adopting the latest manufacturing process is to bring down power consumption, it was odd for Apple not to address anything concrete around power draw. Hopefully the iPhone event will have more in store for that.

Apple A14 SoC is the world's first commercially available 5nm chip

There’s likely to be a lot more to the chip than what was announced. A teaser slide during the presentation left a lot of things unanswered. A new ISP? Desktop class storage? New Memory chips? We expect all the questions to be answered at the iPhone event that Apple is expected to host either by end of September or early in October.

Apple One subscription details

Apple One is a comprehensive subscription plan by the company that brings together all of its services under a single plan. This includes a subscription to Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+ and iCloud.

The Individual plan offers a subscription to Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and 50GB of iCloud storage while the Family Plan can be shared between six family members giving them access to Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and 200GB of iCloud storage.

The Premier plan isn’t available in India but offers Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+ and 2TB of iCloud storage. Like the Family plan, the Premier plan can be shared with upto six people.

Additionally, Apple will offer a 30-day trial for services that users haven’t subscribed to already.

Why should you subscribe to Apple One?

Being a comprehensive service, Apple One subscription does away with the hassle of maintaining and paying for all the Apple services every month. Instead, users can now just subscribe to Apple One and get access to all the entertainment and cloud storage services by paying up just one time.

We compared the prices of Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and iCloud services individually to get an idea as to how much can a user save by subscribing to Apple One instead of paying up separately for the four services.

Apple Music, Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ are priced at Rs 99 for the monthly individual subscription while the iCloud storage is offered in three tiers-- 50GB for Rs 75, 200GB for Rs 219 and 2TB of Rs 749. Adding up the individual Apple Music, Arcade and TV+ plans along with 50GB iCloud storage, it totals to Rs 372. However, the Apple One Individual plan is priced at Rs 195 which means a saving of Rs 177. Similarly, by choosing the Family plan, Apple users will save Rs 200 per month.
