Google Maps introduces COVID-19 layer to help you track Coronavirus cases around you

Google Maps is rolling out a new update that adds a COVID-19 layer to help you track Coronavirus developments around your region. This will enable the common person to make informed decisions about when to step out of the house and avoid visiting places that have the most COVID-19 concentration. Google has added a host of new features since the beginning of the year in the eye of the Coronavirus pandemic and this new COVID-19 layer will reach users worldwide by the end of this week, both for Android and iOS devices.

Google will now display information about COVID-19 cases around your region on Maps and this new feature will be available in over 220 countries supporting Google Maps. Google sources this data from multiple authorities such as Johns Hopkins, Wikipedia, New York Times, WHO, health ministries and also local hospitals. Google is expanding its already available Coronavirus resources to the Maps in order to better inform the people about the status of the pandemic in case they plan on venturing out of their houses.

“While getting around is more complicated these days, our hope is that these Google Maps features will help you get where you need to be as safely and efficiently as possible,” said Sujoy Banerjee, Product Manager at Google Maps.

Google Maps COVID-19 layer: How to use?

Google Maps adds COVID-19 layer on Android and iOS

Google has added a new layer in the Maps app on Android and iOS that lets users see a seven-day average of COVID-19 cases around the region selected on the map. Like all the other layers available on the map, the COVID-19 Info layer tracks Coronavirus cases per 100,000 people in the area and gives an overview to the users about the trends going up or down in a particular region.

Google Maps adds COVID-19 layer on Android and iOS

Moreover, Google has also labelled and colour-coded different regions for easier identification in the Maps and information about the cases are also displayed at country, state and city levels wherever it is available.

Once your Android or iOS phone receives the new Google Maps update, you can check out the new feature by following these steps. Opening the Google Maps app, you would see a new banner pop-up on the “Layers” icon saying “See COVID-19 Info”. Tap on the layers button and select Covid-19 Info from the Map Details section and you’re good to go.

Next, you just need to zoom in and select the region you want to see the Coronavirus data of and the Maps will display city-wise or state-wise data if available.

The Snapdragon 750G is more powerful than the 765G Qualcomms naming scheme becomes more confusing

Just days after Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 750G SoC, the company’s second 5G-powered modem in the 7-series, benchmark results have been leaked, indicating there’s more to the chipset than what meets the eye.

Millet Snapdragon 750G engineering machine GeekBench5 running points, single-threaded 650/multi-threaded 1950. For reference, Snapdragon 765G is 600/1700, Dimensity 820 is 630/2100, and Kirin 820 is 600/2200. The product positioning of this machine will not be very high.. (1/2)

— Digital Chat Station (@StationChat) September 23, 2020

According to a tipster, the Snapdragon 750G’s Geekbench scores are better than those of the Snapdragon 765G. That was kinda expected, considering the Snapdragon 750G sports the latest Kryo 570 cores, which belongs to the same family as the one used on the Snapdragon 865. So, the CPU cores on the Snapdragon 750G are based on the newer ARM Cortex-A77 cores while the one on the Snapdragon 765G are based on ARM Cortex-A76 cores.

The tipster, who goes by the handle Digital Chat Station, revealed the Snapdragon 750G scored 650 and 1900 on the Geekbench single core and multicore tests. That’s around 7-8% higher than the scores from the Snapdragon 765G, leading to further complications around Qualcomm’s naming scheme for its chipsets. Going by the scores, will the Snapdragon 750G perform better than the Snapdragon 765G? The naming should definitely be stating the opposite, but then again, Geekbench scores aren’t the only benchmark apps to compare performance among SoCs.

The tipster does prod towards the fact that the competition may not be within Snapdragon chips at all. The Snapdragon 750G could have been designed to take on Qualcomm’s fiercest rival in the mid-range segment, MediaTek. The Snapdragon 750G scores are reportedly close to the scores of the MediaTek Dimensity 820, but the latter beats it on multi-core tests. It’s likely then that the Snapdragon 750G won’t be showing up on devices that would be too premium in terms of the price and spec-sheet, but remain competitively mid-range.

Qualcomm has revealed Xiaomi will be the first to bring a smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 750G by the end of this year, and the tipster stated that the scores were generated from a Xiaomi engineering prototype running on the latest chipset. We will find out more about the performance of this chipset, soon as we get our hands on the device.

Mini-LED displays could debut with new Apple iPad Pro according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

More Apple news coming your way, this time from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. According to Kuo, Apple will debut a Mini-LED display with the new iPad Pro. In a research note, Kuo notes that the components used in Mini LED displays should be going into mass production by the end of this year. But, there is no real news on when the new iPad Pro will be released so, the timeline for Mini-LED displays is a bit murky, at best. From the rumours doing the rounds on the internet, Apple is working on 6 new devices that feature Mini-LED displays.

Mini-LED displays come with better contrast ratios and deeper blacks compared to an LCD. It offers similar benefits to OLED displays as well. These displays come with 1000 to 10,000 LEDs that deliver deeper blacks, more vibrant colours and a better contrast ratio as well. Kuo also states that Apple is looking at aggressively adopting the new display tech and is ramping up adoption on its devices as well. And, most importantly, Apple now has a number of suppliers to choose from, which could lead to a lowering of the price in the process. So, we should be expecting Apple’s newer iPad Pro to maybe come with a Mini-LED display in the very near future.

Retail box of new Chromecast with Google TV appears online

We’ve seen Google’s upcoming successor to the Chromecast leak multiple times online. From the specs to the features and even the inclusion of a remote control, a lot has been leaked about the upcoming Chromecast online. We now have a look at the retail box of the upcoming Chromecast. A video of the retail box of the streaming stick has made its way online. Reddit user jsterninja has shown off the box of the device, but sadly there is no unboxing to show us the contents of the box.

The box of the new Chromecast clearly highlights that the device will be capable of 4K and HDR. The front of the box shows the dongle, which has leaked multiple times, along with the remote control as well.

Google has been pushing Stadia, its cloud gaming platform, to work with the current-gen Chromecast Ultra and it is possible that we could see some Stadia specific enhancements on this device. With Android TV 11 we have seen features like Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) make an appearance. So, it is possible that ALLM mode makes an appearance for other games downloaded from the Play Store.

Android 11 on TV may not bring with it a visual change but it does bring improvements under the hood, which you can check out here.

What remains to be seen is how Google prices and positions the new Chromecast. In India, we have devices like the Mi Box 4K, Mi TV Stick, Nokia Media Streamer, Apple TV 4K, Fire TV Stick 4K and more. So, the new Chromecast will face tough competition, especially in a price-sensitive market like India.
