OnePlus to launch new IP55 rated TWS earbuds, could be called OnePlus Buds Z

The OnePlus 8T launch will also see the company introduce a pair of new IP55-rated TWS earbuds, OnePlus has confirmed. These new truly wireless earbuds could be called OnePlus Buds Z, according to several rumours online. The name Buds Z was also spotted in the OxygenOS 11 beta build by folks over at XDA, hinting at the existence of the new and affordable wireless earbuds.

No matter the weather, you won't miss a beat with our new IP55-rated Buds. See them October 14.

— OnePlus (@oneplus) October 3, 2020

OnePlus is expected to launch multiple products on October 14 alongside the OnePlus 8T and one such product is rumoured to be the OnePlus Buds Z. As is the tradition, OnePlus usually associates the “Z” suffix with its affordable products as we saw with the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z that was launched alongside the OnePlus 8 series. The OnePlus Buds debuted alongside the OnePlus Nord back in July at Rs 4,990 and the company could be looking to offer affordable earbuds now.

Previously, OnePlus posted a picture of the silicone ear tip, teasing the imminent launch of a new earphone. In a subsequent tweet posted on October 3, the company confirmed that it is planning to launch a new IP55-rated Buds on October 14. Interestingly, the OnePlus Buds are IPX4 rated, meaning it is protected against splashes of water but isn’t waterproof and dustproof. With the IP55 rating, the upcoming Buds offer protection against dust and water from all sides.

A whole new world of sound. Coming soon.

Mivi Duopods M80

The Mivi Duopods are feature-rich true wireless earphones that also have ergonomic and lightweight earbuds that fit snugly in most ears. However, the overly muddy bass response tends to shroud the details in the mids and highs in most genres of music. Additionally, the bass also gets distorted on higher volumes, which makes it hard to recommend these earphones for music listeners. At Rs 2,999, there are some pretty decent options from other companies such as the Playgo T44 and Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds.

Homegrown audio company, Mivi recently launched a new pair of truly wireless earphones, the Mivi Duopods M80, in the booming affordable TWS market. Priced at Rs 2,999, the Duopods M80 comes packing Bluetooth v5.0 connectivity, IPX4 water resistance rating, aptX codec support, touch controls, sizable battery life of about 30 hours, Type-C charging and much more. Let’s find out if these feature-rich earphones deliver when it comes to sound quality and build.

Build and comfort

Mivi Duopods M80 true wireless earphones

Featuring a primarily plastic build, the Mivi Duopods M80’s charging case features a matte black colour, while the earbuds themselves have a glossy texture. The charging case has a pill-shaped design with a fair amount of vertical life, which makes it bulge out of pockets slightly. The front of the case houses 5 LED lights to indicate the charging status of the case as well as the buds. The back houses a USB Type-C charging port, which is always great to have at this price point.

Mivi Duopods M80

The earbuds have a pipe-style in-ear design with angled nozzles that enhance the fit. The rear casings of the buds have a metallic CD-like pattern with the Mivi logo housed in the centre. This part doubles as a touch panel to control playback and calls. At the bottom of the elongated pipes, there’s a tiny metallic portion which houses an LED status indicator as well as the microphone. The design of the buds is more appealing than the rather bland-looking case.

Mivi Duopods M80

Overall, the buds have an ergonomic and lightweight design and fit in the ears pretty snugly. The IPX4 rating means that you can use these buds in the gym even if you sweat profusely, or even in light rains. The buds don’t cause any discomfort or pressure within the ears even after prolonged usage. However, the touch controls are extremely sensitive, to a point where it gets irritating. Even unintended slight taps cause the music to pause or play.

Features

Despite being affordable true wireless earphones, the Mivi Duopods M80 come equipped with a substantial number of features. The touch controls on the buds can be used to play/pause music, answer/decline phone calls, change tracks, and even summon your voice assistant. However, volume controls are absent, which is a shame.

Mivi Duopods M80

The earphones, along with the more standard SBC and AAC codecs, also supports the aptX codec which translates to lower latency and enhanced sound quality. Nevertheless, simply employing this codec doesn’t mean that the sound quality will be commendable right away since it also depends on the drivers and tuning. We’ll get to the performance later.

The Mivi Duopods M80 also comes with mono mode, which means both buds are master buds. So, you can simply pull out one earbud (right or left) from the case and listen to music solely on that. Powered by Bluetooth v5.0, the earphones connect to your device pretty much instantaneously. However, we did notice some skips and lags in playback at times.

Mivi Duopods M80

You also get a battery life of 30 hours, as per company claims. However, in our tests, we managed to extract about 25 hours from the earphones - 5 hours from the earbuds on a single charge, and 4 additional charges from the case, which is pretty good for this price point. You also get USB Type-C charging, which is becoming more common even in affordable wireless earphones.

Performance

The Mivi Duopods M80 features a pretty impressive build and is quite feature-rich for the price point, however, the sound quality was somewhat disappointing. Now, unless you are an extreme bass head that prefers thump at the expense of pretty much everything else, these earphones may disappoint you too with their aggressive and muddy bass response that significantly cloud the mids and highs. The mids are actually pretty detailed due to the aptX codec support but the extraneous bass response drowns out the details.

Bass-heavy tracks such as bad guy by Billie Eilish features tons of bass thump but the over-exaggeration makes it sound pretty muddy and distorted, especially at higher volumes. Note that these earphones are extremely loud, and we wouldn’t advise you to go past 40-50 per cent volume, since it isn’t good for your hearing and the sound starts cracking and distorting at higher volumes on these earphones.

Mivi Duopods M80

In rock songs such as Popular Monster by Falling in Reverse and Pull Me Under by Dream Theatre, the muddy bass takes over the intricacies of the song completely, with the drums essentially drowning out the vocals and other higher-frequency instruments. Vocal-centric tracks also sound slightly lacklustre due to the lack of drive in the mids.

Now, moving on to the microphone quality, it performs acceptably in quiet environments such as your home, however, in more noisy environments the Duopods M80 tend to let excessive amounts of background noise in which hampers the calling experience.

Bottomline

The Mivi Duopods are feature-rich true wireless earphones that also have ergonomic and lightweight earbuds that fit snugly in most ears. However, the overly muddy bass response tends to shroud the details in the mids and highs in most genres of music. Additionally, the bass also gets distorted on higher volumes, which makes it hard to recommend these earphones for music listeners. At Rs 2,999, there are some pretty decent options from other companies such as the Playgo T44 and Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds.

ASUS ROG Cetra in-ear gaming headphones

The ASUS ROG Cetra in-ear headphones are designed, stylistically and sound-wise, for gamers. They feature premium features such as ANC and Ambient Sound, as well as multi-platform compatibility and software support for PC and laptops. The sound quality for gaming is commendable with stellar staging and emphasised highs that make for directionally-accurate and lively gunshots in FPS games. The earphones are also pretty good for other games such as Among Us owing to the solid omnidirectional microphone performance. However, for music, these earphones are a bit too bright and have subdued lows and bass response. Overall, for Rs 7,699, the earphones are quite pricey but if you value excellent positional cues in gaming and a gamer aesthetic, the ASUS ROG Cetra may be the right choice for you.

After the immense popularisation of wireless headsets, wired ones have sort of become the anomaly. Audio companies, across all budgets, are directing their time and resources towards manufacturing wireless headsets that not only deliver when it comes to sound and looks but also when it comes to latency, especially since mobile gaming is garnering so much attention. However, most gamers, especially at competitive levels, prefer their latency-free wired counterparts even today. To that end, Taiwanese company ASUS recently launched an in-ear wired pair of gaming headphones that are primarily geared towards gamers. These are the ASUS ROG Cetra gaming earphones that come equipped with lucrative features such as Active Noise Cancellation, Ambient Sound Mode, USB-C connectivity, Hi-Res audio compatibility, and even lights! Priced at Rs 7,699, the headphones scream gaming just when you look at them and can feature cross-platform compatibility on PCs, mobile phones, laptops, and even the Nintendo Switch. Let’s find out how the ASUS ROG Cetra fared in our review.

Build and comfort

ASUS ROG Cetra gaming earphones

The ASUS ROG Cetra in-ear headphones are designed stylistically to match the gamer aesthetic. The earphones are primarily black in colour with the outer casings of the earbuds that house the ROG logo lighting up red when they are plugged into the source device. Speaking of the source device, the earphones draw power from the connected device that powers the ANC functionality and the lights.

ASUS ROG Cetra

The earbuds feature a rather conventional design with an angled nozzle and silicone buds at the end to aid fit and comfort. However, they do come with silicone wings or fins to further enhance the fit. ASUS has packed three sizes of silicone ear tips (S, M, L) and an extra pair of memory-foam tips, which were, by far, our favourite. The earbuds are comfortable, ergonomic, and fit most ears given the number of ear tips options provided. There’s also a tiny carry case and a shirt-clip provided in the box.

ASUS ROG Cetra

The cable length is a generous 1.25 metres which is more than adequate for laptop and mobile users, and good enough for even PC users. The cable, however, isn’t braided or nylon, which is disappointing at this price point. The in-line module on the earphones features controls for Active Noise Cancellation, Ambient mode, playback, volume, and calls. There’s also a microphone that’s higher up on the cable.

ASUS ROG Cetra

The in-line remote as well as the microphone unit are made out of plastic and feel a bit rough around the edges. The buttons, especially, feel quite plasticky and are pretty unyielding. We often found ourselves exerting a bit more pressure than desirable to press the buttons. Nevertheless, the controls work fine and are intuitive enough. At the other end, the earphones have a USB Type-C connector that isn’t angled. Overall, the earphones scream gaming aesthetically and are sufficiently well-built but the hard-to-press controls on the in-line remote mar the experience slightly.

Features

Two of the biggest headlining features the ASUS ROG Cetra employs are Active Noise Cancellation and Ambient Sound mode. The company has added separate microphones for ANC on the earphones themselves. While ANC on these earphones isn’t close to as impressive as on the premium on-ear headphones and true wireless earphones from Sony and Apple, it is enough to significantly drown out some distractions such as the AC drone, PC hum, and more. The ROG Cetra’s ANC works best with low-frequency, consistent sounds and it has some trouble drowning high-frequency, erratic ones such as a mechanical keyboard or a high-speed fan. Unfortunately, we did find that there’s a considerable amount of cable noise when the microphone touches your clothes at times when you’re moving around.

ASUS ROG Cetra

Ambient Sound works pretty well and amplifies background sounds significantly to a point where you can hear them even if there’s music playing at about 40-50 per cent volume. While we didn’t utilise the Ambient Sound mode as much as the ANC mode since we’re working from home, it’s nice to have the feature available nonetheless, for when we need it in the future.

Now, if you are using the ASUS ROG Cetra in-ear headphones with your laptop or PC, you can install the Armoury II software that offers additional controls and customisations. The software comes equipped with an adjustable EQ, bit rate and frequency response controls, sound presets, and a Virtual Surround Sound toggle. You can create different kinds of profiles for different games and apply them when necessary. The software isn’t available in app form for mobile phones.

ASUS ROG Cetra

Additionally, as mentioned above, the earphones can be used across platforms such as mobile phones, PCs, Mac, laptops, and the Nintendo Switch. If your phone or laptop doesn’t come with a USB-C connector, you can consider purchasing the ASUS ROG Cetra Core instead which comes with a 3.5mm connector, albeit without ANC. Note that ASUS states that Android phone compatibility is limited to a list of phones mentioned on the official product page, however, the earphones worked with full functionality on our test device - the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, and even on our secondary device - the Pocofone F1, which weren’t mentioned on the official list.

Performance: Gaming and Music

Featuring 10.8mm dynamic drivers with a frequency response of 20-40,000Hz, the ASUS ROG Cetra certainly sounds like they’re especially tuned for gaming. The earphones feature excellent staging and separation that make games such as Call of Duty: Mobile sound positionally-accurate, and dynamic. The wide soundstage allows for accurate positioning of gunshots and footsteps and the emphasised treble response makes gunshots sound lively and dynamic. In other games such as Asphalt 9 that have a prominent background score, the ROG Cetra weren’t as impressive, but slightly better than standard wired earphones. Also, with the cacophony of background music as well as in-game sounds, the otherwise superb directional cues are slightly diminished.

ASUS ROG Cetra

The omnidirectional microphone on these gaming earphones are pretty competent and work well for games such as Among Us that require you to talk on Discord. The microphone picked up our voice and relayed it sufficiently well, with minimal distortion. The microphone also filters out a significant amount of background noise such as a high-speed ceiling fan and AC drone.

Coming to music, the ASUS ROG Cetra are out of their element here. The sound signature is overly bright with subdued lows and bass, and tinny highs. The soundstage is still brilliant and imaging is rather good as well even in tracks with multiple instruments such as Hunter by Bjork. However, the underwhelming lows and the shrill highs were enough to deter us from listening to a lot of music on these earphones, since the overall signature is a tad too bright. This caused some listening fatigue over an hour of listening to music. Overall, if you are planning to solely purchase a pair of headphones to listen to music, the ASUS ROG Cetra wouldn’t be the way to go, but if you’re looking for a solid pair of gaming earphones, these earphones are great options with the added benefit of Active Noise Cancellation.

Bottomline

PS5 hands-on event in Japan shows off the size of console, games and DualSense controllers

So, while the world is waiting with bated breath for the release of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S, we got a bit of an in-depth look at the PS5 this past weekend. Starting off the tour in Japan, a few Japanese publications and a few Japanese Youtubers were invited for a hands-on preview of the PS5. They were shown the console, along with the DualSense controller as well as a few games. Famed gaming publication Famitsu released a video which gives us a good look at how big the PS5 will be. In our eyes, it doesn’t look as massive as we thought it would be but it is still quite large.

PS5 hands on event showed off console and games

Images of the console and the DualSense controller were also released by 4Gamer. The images showed off the console vertically as well as horizontally. Another aspect of the PS5 that has gamers generally surprised was that the PS5 fan is claimed to be ‘super quiet’. In the images, there seems to be some sort of latch that could allow users to expand the console’s storage capacity with an SSD. In the video embedded below, you can also see the console relative to the size of a TV. The images also showed off the DualSense controller and boy, does it look sleek.

There's a new LED indicator just below the touchpad that shows off player 1,2,3 and 4. You can also see the LED strip that surround the touchpad change colours depending on the game you’re playing. Maybe, we could even be given the option to customize the colour according to our liking? We did not get to see the UI of the PS5 but a few games were showcased such as Astro’s Playroom and Godfall. Sony also showed off the loading speed (or lack thereof) of the PS5 and it looks incredibly fast with Astro’s Playroom taking less than a second to reload the game at a checkpoint after the player has died.

PS5 hands on event Dualsense

PS5 Dualsense controllers

There wasn’t much in terms of gameplay or UI, but we did a lot of new looks at the console and how big it actually is along with a few games and how they run on the system. You can check out how the PS5 compares to the Xbox Series X right here.
