Adobe Illustrator for iPad launched alongside major updates to desktop app

Adobe had revealed Illustrator for iPad last year at Adobe Max and since then, there’s been a lot of anticipation around its actual release. The app was made available earlier this year to a very select few as part of a beta, but now during Adobe Max 2020, the company has made Illustrator for iPad available to everyone.

Adobe Illustrator for the iPad has been created from the ground up keeping the tablet form factor and user interface in mind. At the heart of Illustrator for iPad is a collection of 18,000 fonts, which support OpenType Colour and can also be placed on paths to create interesting artwork. The other core feature of Illustrator happens to be the ability to draw anywhere, meaning you start your project by simply snapping a photo or importing one into your canvas and get going.

Adobe Illustrator for iPad is now available

At launch, Illustrator for iPad is expected to ship with a limited feature set. Adobe says that the roadmap for Illustrator includes a lot more functionality in the months to come. For now, the company wants to focus on getting the basics right. Adobe says that the final launch features an functionality were based on the extensive feedback shared by the 5000 or so beta testers who were able to get their hands on the app.

In addition to finally releasing Illustrator for iPad, Adobe also announced major upgrades to the desktop version of the app as well. Adobe says that this is the biggest feature upgrade to Illustrator ever. New features include an improved Recolor Artwork Tool, the ability to syc documents over the cloud, Glyph snapping and significantly improved options to align and adjust text. Illustrator also leverages GPU acceleration on the desktop to now provide real-time previews of what you’re drawing, instead of just showing you an outline.

Adobe’s release of Illustrator for iPad and update to Illustrator comes alongside the many updates also announced for Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere Pro.

Adobe Photoshop gets new Refine Hair and Sky Replacement features along with many others

Adobe Max is the yearly 3-day creative conference, that for the first time, is taking place completely virtually. Adobe Max is where Adobe announces the new major features coming to their application suite. This year, Adobe is announcing some major changes to Photoshop for desktop and iPad. While the number of features are far and large, here’s a few that you should be looking forward to.

Sky Replacement

Sky replacement is a fairly common practice amongst landscape photographers, but is a rather complex and time-consuming task. The challenge isn’t selection, but rather pasting in the new sky or sky features and then matching the lighting and contrast to the original shot. With the new update, photographers will be able to replace the sky or add to it with a few simple clicks and Photoshop will blend the sky and perform the colour adjustments automatically.

Adobe Photoshop gets automatic sky repacement, a feature that will not only replace the sky, but also colour match it to the original shot

Refine Hair

When selecting people in a photograph, the trickiest part of the selection is often the hair. People with straight hair don’t give so much trouble to the editor, unless it’s a windy day, but selecting curly hair can be a really time-consuming task. Adobe Photoshop now includes a Refine Hair tool, which with just one click of a button, performs the selection for you. This is especially useful if you have used the Object Selection Tool or Quick Select Tool to select a particular person and want to refine hair in a single click.

Adobe Photoshop has a one-click hair refinemnt tool that will automatically select the hair on a selected subject

Neural filters

This one is for the very creative ones, an extension of Adobe’s Sensei AI engine. Neural filters are an addition in the existing filter set available in Photoshop and allows for very interesting alterations to the photos by just moving the sliders around. You can colorize a scene, zoom in on parts of an image, and transform portraits in seconds to adjust for age, expression, pose, colors, and more.

Live Shapes

One of the most requested features in Photoshop has been the ability to adjust geometric shapes at will. With Live Shapes, Adobe promises that users will be able to edit geometric shapes like lines, rectangles, triangles etc in a more fluid and dynamic manner, while having very precise control over it.

Revamped Plugin Environment

For decades, plugins have been a critical part of the Photoshop experience. However, plugins usually lived far deep in the Filter menu of Photoshop. This time around, Adobe is giving Plugins its own menu and space in the main menu bar. Additionally, there is now a proper plugins panel which allows you to search for new plugins and manage the ones you’ve already got installed.

Adobe Photoshop now has a new Plugins panel to find and manage plugins for Photoshop

Colour Grading in ACR

Last but not the least, Adobe is bringing Lightroom Classic’s new colour grading system to Adobe Camera Raw. The colour grading wheel replaces the Split Toning module. Split toning only added colour tones to the shadows and highlights, but the new colour grading wheel taking directly from Premiere Pro’s Lumetri system will allow photographers to add colour to the mid-tones in photos as well. The end-result; the ability to add cinematic colour grades to your image.

These are just some many new features that will be a part of Photoshop CC. Other features include pattern preview, object-aware refine edge, presets for Select and Mask and many more. The update should be going live right after the announcement is made during the Adobe Max 2020 conference.

Adobe Lightroom Classic and Lightroom get Lumetri Colour Grading as part of Adobe Max announcement

Adobe Lightroom Classic is the go-to application for a majority of the photographers around the world when it comes to managing and editing their massive image catalogues. The community of Lightroom users is a large one, and also one of the most vocal when it comes to demanding improvements and new features. At Adobe Max, the company has announced new features and improvements to both Lightroom Classic and Lightroom.

Adobe Lightroom Classic vs. Adobe Lightroom

Before we go any further into the announcement, it is important to know the difference between the two. Lightroom Classic is the full-fledged desktop app which maintains a catalog of your images and offers extensive control over editing. The application uses GPU acceleration to speed up complex editing of RAW files. Adobe Lightroom Classic is available only on PC and Mac. Adobe Lightroom is a slimmed down version of Lightroom Classic, designed to be an app that works seamlessly across multiple computing platforms such as desktop and mobile. Adobe Lightroom is supposed to offer a seamless editing experience between the desktop, an iPad or your smartphone. Adobe Lightroom leverages the cloud to sync images and editing data across the platforms.

Lumetri based Colour Grading

Few years ago, Adobe acquired SpeedGrade, a much favoured colour grading tool in the professional space, and integrated it into the Creative Cloud package. Later, Adobe discontinued the stand-alone Speedgrade application, instead bringing the functionality into Adobe Premiere via Lumetri Colour, a very powerful way of colour grading film. This, is now coming to Adobe Lightroom Classic and Adobe Lightroom, replacing the Split Toning tool. Users who want to apply split tonight can still do so by manipulating just the shadows and highlights settings in the colour wheels. The feature is also going to be a part of Adobe Photoshop through Adobe Camera Raw.

Adobe Lightroom Classic and Adobe Lightroom will get Lumetri Colour adjustment as announced ad Adobe Max

Enhanced Zoom

Currently, Lightroom Classic and Lightroom offer preset zoom levels. With the new update, users of the two applications will be able to zoom according to their own preferences. Two new zoom modes are being added to both the applications. In one mode, users will be able to define an area which they want zoomed. The second zoom method allows users to zoom in and out at will using the scroll wheel.

GPU Acceleration

Adobe Lightroom Classic has been receiving minor upgrades to GPU acceleration over the last year. Since Lightroom Classic has multiple modules that come together as one, not all of them got the GPU acceleration treatment. Today, Adobe has announced that the Local Adjustments will be GPU Accelerated as well, greatly smoothening out the process. This feature will be limited to Adobe Lightroom Classic only.

Enhanced Watermarking

While Lightroom Classic has offered extensive flexibility in the way users could watermark their images, users of Lightroom were severely limited. Recently the app allowed users to add text-based watermarks, but today onwards, users will be able to impress graphical watermarks onto their images as well.

Besides the above features, there are a number of other smaller improvements that have made their way onto Lightroom Classic and Lightroom.

The iPhone 12 wont support 5G in dual SIM: Report

One of the most eye-catching features for this year’s Apple iPhone release was the inclusion of 5G on the device. “iPhone 12 may not support 5G in dual-SIM mode right out of the box.” was the headline trending over the weekend on Reddit.

According to the post,  “When using two lines in Dual SIM mode, 5G data isn’t supported on either line and will fall back to 4G LTE. If customers are using eSIM only and are on a 5G supported carrier and service plan, they’ll have 5G access.”

The Dual SIM feature was introduced with the iPhone XS which would allow the users on supported carriers to use one nano and one eSIM, which is useful for people who travel abroad and require carrying local SIMs for the particular region or people who prefer to maintain their work and personal lines on the same device.

The iPhone 12 won’t support 5G in dual SIM

MacRumors spotted the discussion on Reddit and confirmed the authenticity of the internal document, another user who claims to have the document comments on the same thread stating that this issue would be fixed by a software update in the future, but Apple has not yet commented anything on the issue or the fix.

For now, you can access 5G networks on the iPhone 12 with either a Nano-SIM line or an eSIM, so long as you use only a single line at one time, meaning any eSIM users will have to remove the physical card from their iPhone 12 to access 5G speeds.

This won’t be an issue in India for the time being as there are no 5G carriers available at present, but buying the latest and the greatest from Apple which may not support dual SIM 5G in the future is a thing to look for.

In India, the iPhone 12 series starts at Rs. 69,900 for the 64GB iPhone 12 mini. Pre Orders for the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro in India begin on October 23 and availability starts from October 30. The iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max can be pre-ordered from November 6 and customers can expect to get their hands on the new phones from November 13. You can read more about that here.
