Micromax In smartphones launching in India on November 3

The first line-up of Micromax smartphones under the ‘In’ sub-brand will launch in India on November 3. Domestic Indian brand Micromax is staging a comeback under a new sub-brand named In, before Diwali. Co-founder Rahul Sharma shared an emotional video rousing the sentiments of Atmanirbhar Bharat, and announcing the launch of new smartphones to take on Chinese rivals like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Realme. The company sent out invites today confirming the launch.

The announcement is shared in the form of a video which says “Join us as we give you a bona fide Indian choice on 3rd November 2020 12 Noon”. It will likely be a virtual event that is going to be live streamed on Tuesday, 3rd November.

Micromax In smartphones: Expected specs and features

While Micromax remains tight-lipped about the specs and features of its upcoming smartphones, but eventual leaks have spilled it all out. According to a report by The Mobile Indian, Micromax is planning to launch at least two smartphones this year, and both of them are reportedly going to be powered by MediaTek chips, manufactured in Taiwan. They are reportedly going to be named Micromax In 1 and Micromax In 1A.

Further details about the smartphones state they will be sporting 6.5-inch HD+ display and run on stock Android out of the box. Clearly, these are going to be entry-level, mass-market smartphones aimed at the under-10k segment.

One of the smartphones is expected to be powered by the MediaTek Helio G35, the same chipset that powers the POCO C3, Realme C11 and more, coupled with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage on the base model. This same model is expected to sport a 13+2MP dual camera setup, while the more expensive offering is reportedly going to come with 3GB RAM and a triple camera setup, that includes a 13MP primary shooter. There’s expected to be a 5,000mAh battery on board as well.

There’s another smartphone that’s being reported to launch soon under the ‘In’ brand powered by the more powerful MediaTek Helio G85 SoC, but nothing more is known about this one.

The smartphones are likely going to be priced in the Rs 7000-Rs 10,000 bracket. There’s expected to be a lot more buzz around the upcoming products leading up to the launch. We just have to wait and see how well these smartphones shape up in the market.

Uphill task ahead for Micromax

Micromax used to be the leader of the Indian smartphone market, becoming the first budget smartphone brand in the country. However, lacking R&D and relying heavily on wholesale products bought from China, the company lost out to the Chinese brands that flooded the market in the 2010s.

However, with the sentiments now going against Chinese companies after the Indo-China border clashes, Micromax felt this would be the best time to stage a comeback. The government has also outlined the production-linked incentives scheme for smartphone manufacturers to make phones in India, and this could become the secret weapon for the company to outshine its Chinese rivals once again.

WhatsApp adds a shopping button for global users, set to arrive in India later

WhatsApp is adding a shopping button to its popular instant messaging app that goes live today globally. However, India will get it later. As a part of its expansion plans for business accounts, the Facebook-backed messaging platform wants to help businesses interact with customers and provide their services with more ease. Later, WhatsApp will also add more shopping features to the app including sharing catalogue, adding products to cart and check out, all without leaving the app.

WhatsApp claims that over 175 million users interact with a Business account everyday globally and according to a survey by The Harris Poll, over 81 percent of Indians prefer using messaging to communicate with businesses. For WhatsApp, India is its largest market with over 400 million users as of July 2019 and the company has been working on its payments solution, WhatsApp Pay for quite some time now.

For its new features, WhatsApp is leveraging the Facebook Shop platform that was introduced earlier this year for small and medium businesses. When the system is fully integrated into WhatsApp, a user can just start a conversation with a business storefront and browse through its offerings, chat with it instantly, select products to purchase and make the payment instantly.

WhatsApp adds shopping button

Moreover, Facebook is also planning to release its own hosting services for the businesses to manage their WhatsApp messages. “Businesses have varying technology needs and want choice in the companies they work with to host and manage customer communications, particularly with remote work increasing. Which is why over the coming months, we plan to expand our partnerships with business solution providers we've worked with over the last two years,” the company wrote in a blog post. Of course, these services will be chargeable for business consumers as Facebook wants its most popular messaging app to “continue building a business” of its own.

Many local and hyperlocal businesses in India currently rely on WhatsApp to communicate and reach out to potential customers with means of text updates, images and videos. With the roll-out of WhatsApp Pay in India, whenever it happens, has the potential to perfectly unify the shopping experience for customers on WhatsApp.

Cities in Gujarat, Maharashtra lead Mobile Gaming Experience in India: Opensignal Report

It’s no surprise that mobile gaming in India has really taken off over the past few years. The reason for the same could be down to improved quality of games, better performance of affordable phones, low-cost data or probably a combination of the lot. However, the question now would be which city would offer the best gaming experience in India. Thankfully, a report by Opensignal seems to have answered that query with its newest report.

Opensignal’s report analyzed the mobile network experience in 48 of India’s largest cities. It then checked that against its Games Experience metric which measures how users perceive real-time multiplayer gaming on a cellular network on a scale of 0-100. The measurements were conducted across popular battle royale and MOBA games like Call of Duty: Mobile, Clash of Clans, and even PUBG Mobile which was banned a few months ago.

Opensignal mobile games experience in Indian cities

One of the more interesting results of the report was that the major metropolitan cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai or Bangalore were not in the top 5. In fact, Mumbai was the only metro to get into the top 10. Ahmedabad took the top spot with a score of 71.7, followed by Navi Mumbai with a score of 70.1. Vadodara rounded off the top three spots with a score of 69.8. The report also notes that cities in Gujarat and Maharashtra dominated its mobile gaming experience in India with seven of the top ten cities in India. It was noted that only four of the eight Tier 1 cities in India were within the top 20. In fact, Tier 2 cities like Surat, Thane and Rajkot managed to get into the top 10. Tier 1 cities like Pune, Bangalore, Delhi and Kolkata were placed in the lower half. Varanasi and Thiruvananthapuram were at the bottom of the list with scores under 50.
