The iPhone 12 Mini supports 12W charging via MagSafe

One of the new features introduced by Apple in the iPhone 12 is MagSafe charging. The MagSafe charger magnetically attaches to the back of the iPhone and offers wireless charging. The MagSafe charging on the iPhone 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max offers 15W of fast charging but on the iPhone 12 Mini, it is limited to 12W of charging.

A user should plug the charger into the wall before placing the phone on it. According to Apple, “This allows MagSafe to verify it's safe to deliver maximum power. If you happen to place your iPhone on the MagSafe Charger before plugging into a power source, simply remove your iPhone from the MagSafe Charger, wait three seconds, and then put it back on to resume maximum power delivery”. Needless to say, if you put the MagSafe charger on the iPhone before plugging it into the wall, you will not get the maximum charging speed.

Apple officially launched the iPhone 12 family of smartphones in the mid of October. All the new iPhones support 5G networks and have a flat-edge design that’s reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5s. The new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are powered by the A14 Bionic processor, dual cameras on the back and a vivid display that’s more durable than ever, thanks to a new layer of Ceramic Shield.

Apple iPhone 12 mini starts at Rs 69,900 for the base 64GB storage variant, Rs 74,900 for the 128GB variant and Rs 84,900 for the 256GB variant. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 is priced starting at Rs 79,900 for the 64GB model followed by the 128GB variant that’s priced at Rs 84,900 for the 128GB variant and Rs 94,900 for the 256GB variant. Among Us to get new gameplay options, map, friend lists, colourblind accessibility, and more

Among Us has been one of the surprise hits of 2020. While the game itself was launched in 2018, its popularity really kicked off after it was played by some popular Twitch streamers. In order to keep up with the sudden surge in popularity, the developers have been at it trying to not only add new features but also fix any bugs and get rid of hackers.

The developers of the game, Innersloth, recently posted patch notes for a recent update to the beta version of the game as well as their roadmap. It was noted that the developers “have lots of things planned, but no real official roadmap. We play things pretty loose, so we can tackle what we think the game needs most. We also don’t want to promise anything and then not provide it so it’s a scary thing to share.”

Hackers

The developers note the presence of cheaters and hackers in the game. While the devs did push out an update, some cheats still work and on top of that, they have to deal with some new bugs. As such, it was noted that there will be no more server updates to fix “all of this” but rushing anti-cheat hacks is causing bugs. As such, the process is slower. They also assured players that any threats made by hackers are baseless, so players should either ban them from the room or leave the room.

Patch notes

When talking about its latest update to Among Us. The developers note that the game will now offer an option for Anonymous Voting. This will make all votes appear as grey. Further, there are now Task Bar modes where which would change the way the in-game Task Bar would behave. ‘Always’ would make it work as before, ‘Meeting’ would only update the bar during meetings, and ‘Invisible’ which removes the task bar entirely. Further, sabotaging comms in the MIRA map will now clear the Security Logs. The final notable change is the addition of symbols to the coloured wire matching mini-game in order to assist colour-blind players. The rest includes bug fixes and cosmetics to the meeting screen.

Roadmap

In the future, the developers plan to add accounts to the game, hopefully by December. This will allow them to report accounts for cheating or for toxic comments. However, they note that things like friend lists will take time and will be implemented later. They Innersloth also noted that they are working on a new map that would be bigger than Polus and that it will be themed after Henry Stickmin, another series of games developed by the developers.

The devs also note that while they are working on a few language options for the game, the translations are a bit rough and are planning to get professionals to translate the game into multiple languages. Further, the developers say that they plan to add even more features to help the colour-blind play the game.

Google Nest Audio

The Nest Audio is affordable, elegant and a great-sounding compact smart speaker for any room or a hall. Compared to the original Google Home launched more than two years ago at a slightly higher price, the Nest Audio looks like an incremental upgrade in all departments at a lesser price point.

It’s been four years since Google launched its first smart speaker - the Google Home - then Google acquired Nest to fuel its smart home ambitions and released a few more iterations of its smart speakers, followed by the latest Google Nest Audio. Which also means Google now has the Nest Mini, Nest Hub and Nest audio, a much better proposition to take on Amazon’s wide range of Echo devices. As the name suggests, the Nest Audio is focused on bringing a richer audio output to make it suitable for music listeners and serve a larger customer base.

Audio quality is now one of the key focus areas and the new Echo speakers or simply any Alexa or Google Assistant-based smart speaker from manufacturers like Bose or Sony are proof. Especially, after Apple released its impressive-sounding HomePod. Before making any assumptions, you must know that the Google Nest Audio costs a lot less than a Bose 500 or the Apple HomePod. It retails at Rs 7,999, which is what makes it an impressive option for a price-sensitive market like India. But does it deliver the ‘audio’ performance we expected from it? Let’s find out.

Audio performance: Google is on the right track

The Nest Audio packs a 75mm woofer and a 19mm tweeter. Since it carries ‘Audio’ in its name, one is bound to have high expectations in this department. For its size, the Nest Audio sounds pretty impressive. It has a loud and clear sound for all kinds of media from spoken word to the music. It operates at 90Hz frequency response, which is considered great if you want to listen to music in its entirety. In my usage, I found it really impressive, but note that if you’re a big fan of bass, you might not enjoy bass-heavy tracks. Although, I did anticipate that because of the size limitation of the speaker.

This is not a party speaker, but it’s as good as any other single-body compact speaker of its price. I don’t think I missed playing any genre on this speaker in the last 25 days, from my mother’s unmastered bhajans to beautiful guitar work by Led Zeppelin in ‘Stairway to Heaven’. But at times when playing a song like Radiohead’s ‘The National Anthem’ you might want to tweak the equaliser manually to get the right balance. In a silent house like mine, I found volume at level 6-7 to be perfect for music while you’re talking to someone or working. Even at half volume, the mids and lows are well reproduced. If you’re a fan of harmonic instruments, vocals and electronic music you have a higher chance of enjoying this. Or if you listen to a lot of podcasts, this speaker will give you no chance to complain there either.

Microphone performance: Worth appreciation

I would always say that a microphone is as important if not more than the speaker performance on voice-enabled gadgets. Thankfully, Google doesn’t disappoint here. Be it picking up voice, recognition or responding to it, the speaker feels more user-friendly and a step closer to making it more realistic.

I have been using this for over 25 days and there hasn’t been a single instance where I found myself struggling with making it understand what I mean. However, my 56-year-old mother having her first smart speaker experience had a hard time conversing with Google Assistant in Hindi. I immediately realised that there’s still a learning curve involved for first-time Assistant users to understand how it reacts to commands. There’s also a lot of work left to be done in Hindi recognition, given the variety in tone and accent in different regions.

The only instance where I had to raise my voice a bit is when the volume was over 7, but it’s still reasonable compared to the Mi Smart Speaker, which costs slightly less than this one. You can talk to it from up to 10-ft without having to scream.

Design and build: Seamless minimalism

If you’ve seen the previous Google Home and Google Nest speakers, you will immediately be able to tell that the Nest Audio comes from the same family. It has a very simplistic, minimalistic and neutral look, just what we’ve seen on the company’s smart speakers in the past. The front is seamless, it has nothing except for the four LEDs that light up when you interact with the speaker. If you’ve seen the Google Home Max, it's the same shape but one-third of its size. It’s less than 7 inches tall and only 3 inches thick.

It has Google’s identical net-style cloth wrapped around the body with a single seam running around the sides, joining at the flat rubberized bottom with a ‘G’ (Google logo) in the centre. I had my doubt about the material’s durability and resistance to dust when I first bought my Google Home Mini three years ago, but it’s still as good as new, in shape, texture and appearance. Those going for lighter shades, however, will have to clean it more often.

The moment I picked the Google Nest Audio’s box, I could feel its heft. It has a very solid construction, weighing just over 1Kg, which shouldn’t be an issue as it’s a stationary speaker that isn’t meant to be carried in your bag. The most you would do is move it around your house, and its weight makes it more stable, preventing it from falling off even if the platform shakes.

It also has touch controls like older Google Home and Nest speakers. Tapping the left part reduces volume while tapping on the right will increase it. The middle part lets you control music playback for play, pause, next and previous.

The minimalism pans all over the body as it only has a body-coloured mute switch, Google logo and the DC power port at the back. It comes in five colours: Chalk, Charcoal, Sage, Sand and Sky, and all of them look fit for most room settings as they do not have a lot going on in the design, or with colours. Also, note that you can’t mount it on a wall, so the only option is to place it vertically on a flat surface.

Smart Home features

It works just as any other Google Assistant-based smart speaker, maybe a bit faster because of the new chip. It lets you do basic tasks like setting reminders, booking an Uber, controlling IoT-based appliances and telling weather and jokes. The speaker also has Chromecast built-in, which worked just as intended when I tried to stream videos and music on a smart TV. It can also be used as a standalone Bluetooth speaker in case you lose Wi-Fi. You just have to command the Assistant to “pair Bluetooth” and it will automatically go into pairing mode.

Setup

Setting up the Nest Audio is nothing unusual. Just download the Home app, plug the speaker to power, go to add device and keep following the instructions. Make sure you connect it to the permanent Wi-Fi. If you are new to the Google Home ecosystem, you must know that it uses third-party services alongside its own to source music and other content, so you will need to sign those up in the app. Note that it doesn’t support Apple Music and Amazon Music, which might be a bummer for some. Other popular apps that you can use are YouTube Music, Deezer and Spotify. Just in case it scares you, know that almost every app aside from the two mentioned gives you an option to cast your music.

There’s also an option to group multiple Nest Audio speakers, but we didn’t get a chance to test it. Going by how it’s advertised, it should create a proper 2 channel surround sound system if that’s what you want.

Bottom line

The Nest Audio is affordable, elegant and a great-sounding compact smart speaker for your room. If your question is, is it the best smart speaker for listening to music? Absolutely not. But the smarts of Google Assistant wrapped in an elegant design with responsive microphones and a good audio performance at merely Rs 7,999 (currently selling at Rs 6,999), it is a great offering for those who want slightly more than the Nest Mini or Echo Dots and don’t want something as heavy as the Google Home Max. In case you're planning to save some bucks and can compromise the responsiveness, design and audio quality, the Mi Smart Speaker is the best money-saving alternative for Nest Audio.

WhatsApp makes it easier for users to delete duplicate images and videos: Heres how to use it

The WhatsApp storage management tool is been rolled-out to users globally and is pegged at making it easier for users to clean up their WhatsApp storage of duplicate images and videos. The instant messaging platform has redesigned the storage management option in the app to identify images or videos that have been shared multiple times or have accumulated over the years.

Before the release of a dedicated storage management tool, WhatsApp used to list the total phone storage used by individual chats and offered a detailed analysis of text messages, photos and videos shared between users. The users had the option of clearing up these items and free up the phone’s storage. However now, with the storage management tool, WhatsApp has received the ability to identify pictures and videos that were forwarded multiple times and can categorize these items based on the storage size occupied.

The new storage management tool offers cleanup suggestions by listing pictures, videos and files under two categories-- forwarded many times and by file size. Users can then preview the selection and can proceed to free up phone’s storage by deleting them manually or in bulk.

How to free up phone’s storage by using WhatsApp storage management tool?

WhatsApp has stated that it has released the new storage management tool and it will be rolling out to more users in the next few days. With the new option, users will also be notified when the phone is running out of storage to save new messages and media files.

Once you have received the new update, the storage management tool can be accessed by going to WhatsApp settings. Tap on Storage and data and then select Manage storage from the list.

Under the Manage storage option, WhatsApp now depicts the storage used by WhatsApp media and other items in a bar graph. Moreover, the new storage management tool automatically groups duplicate images and videos under “forwarded many times” tab and files with more storage size under “larger than 5MB” tab. Users can review these selections and choose to delete the images, files or videos based on the storage space.

With its new storage management tool, WhatsApp aims to provide a simple option for smartphone users to free up their phone’s storage space. This will come in really handy, especially for users who have limited storage space on their mobile phones as it would easily help identify media files taking up unnecessary storage space and remove it. WhatsApp also recently announced a new feature called Disappearing Messages. The company has also released an FAQ on how it works.

Garena Free Fires next Elite Pass will be called Ultrasonic Rave

Free Fire has announced that its next Elite Pass (EP) will be called Ultrasonic Rave. As the name would suggest, the EP focuses on a retro hip-hop style and aesthetic. As always, the new EP adds a bunch of new skins and cosmetics. This includes the two main outfits, namely Stage Master Cooper and Starlet Candy. Both Cooper and Candy wear oversized iconic golden accessories, baggy pants, puffy jackets, and a matching arcade game special effect. Other skins include the Victory Tune backpack skin, Tomb of Boom loot ox skin, the Ultrasonic Rave surfboard and Mic Drop grenade skin.

As with every other EP, Ultrasonic Rave also has a story behind it. It talks about a supercity where music technology can be used as a weapon. The story notes that other countries want to get their hands on this technology, and it's up to the protagonists, Stage Master Cooper and Starlet Candy, to keep this tech safe.

Garena Free Fire also recently announced a new event to celebrate Diwali. Called Light Up Bermuda, the event introduces localized in-game events that include Indian themed emotes and costumes. The event tasks players with completing missions at the Light Up Bermuda Web Event. Players are tasked with collecting diyas to light up the map to 100%. These upcoming MediaTek chips could offer a big speed bump in mid-range smartphones

MediaTek has brought about a revolution of sorts among budget smartphones in India, with most brands opting for the company’s Helio G-series to power their smartphones. The G-series chips are touted particularly for their powerful CPU and GPU, and it seems MediaTek is far from being done with improving budget smartphone performance. New leaks indicate the Taiwanese chip designer is working on two 5nm chips that could potentially disrupt the budget segment.

The leak comes courtesy of Chinese leakster, Digital Chat Station, who claimed two MediaTek chips, MTK6839 and MTK6891 are being manufactured on a 5nm process, making them the first MediaTek chips to be made using the new technology. The two chips are also reportedly going to have cores based on the new ARM Cortex-A78 architecture, which could enable a significant jump in performance over the last generation. There’s also a big improvement in power efficiency that is expected.

So far, not much else is known about these two chips. Whether these will be under the Helio G-series or the Dimensity series, is also unknown at this point. It’s likely going to have a 5G modem built-in, considering the top-end MediaTek chips are now all 5G powered.

We also don’t know when the chips will hit the market. There is a chance we could hear about them from MediaTek before the year comes to a close, and phones powered by the chip should start cropping up early next year.

MediaTek has maintained an edge over Qualcomm this year, in the budget and mid-range segment, especially in India. Most smartphones priced below Rs 20,000 are now powered by a MediaTek chipset. With Qualcomm chips becoming more and more expensive over the years, MediaTek was able to dominate primarily by keeping the prices low, enabling OEMs to offer a better deal with a MediaTek chip onboard.
