More info on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 leaks out weeks ahead of launch

With the launch of the flagship Snapdragon 875 now less than a month away, all eyes are now on Qualcomm. The chipset is scheduled to be announced on December 1 but there has already been a bunch of leaks revealing key information, and even benchmark scores. A new leak now reinforces some old information, indicating the Snapdragon 875 could prove to be one of the biggest leap in mobile performance for the San Diego-based chip designer.

A Weibo report from China claims the Snapdragon 875 will be manufactured on a 5nm node. Now, this was known previously, but there was confusion whether it was Samsung or TSMC who is making it for Qualcomm. The latest report from China claimed Qualcomm was initially getting the chips made on Samsung’s 5nm platform, but owing to production issues, the orders were shifted to TSMC, which is also manufacturing 5nm chips for Apple and Huawei. Qualcomm has already lost the race in becoming the first to launch a 5nm chip for mobiles, but it would ultimately come down to the performance and efficiency gains that will eventually define the success of the upcoming flagship chip.

And we do expect a big leap in performance. A previous leak gave out AnTuTu scores of a Qualcomm SD875 Reference Device, pegging it 25% faster than the previous Snapdragon 865+. The gain is likely due to the use of one super core, three high-performance cores, and four efficiency cores.

The new leak claims the Snapdragon 875 will sport one super core clocked at 2.84GHz, three ARM Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.42GHz, and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The tri-cluster CPU arrangement is not new, but what would be interesting to see is the performance of the super core. This is likely to be based on  the Cortex-X1 core that ARM unveiled in June. The leak also states the Snapdragon 875 will have the Adreno 660 GPU, and the Snapdragon X60 5G modem.

However, it remains to be seen whether Qualcomm integrates the 5G modem like it did with the 4G LTE modems, or keep it discrete like the 5G modem on the Snapdragon 865.

Introducing Digit Zero1 Awards 2020

The Digit Zero1 Awards, now more than a decade old, are given out to the best performing products of the year. The idea behind our initiative is to reward brands for putting in years of research and development to come up with the products that value performance over everything else. If you’re out in the market looking for the best performing products to own, here is where you will get the answer.

In order to keep things fair, we accept products that were launched in the 12-month period between Zero1 Awards. For 2020, the best products will be chosen from products launched after November 15, 2019, and on or before November 14, 2020. Why such weird dates? That’s because we publish the awards on our December issue of the magazine every year, and considering we don’t have superpowers (yet!), we need time to test them. As a result, for products launching near the end of our acceptance period, we call for them under embargo.

Oh, and by ‘test’, we mean we put all these products through the wringer that is our comprehensive test process. Each and every product category that we cover has a rigorous test process and each and every product is made to pass through this test. Calculating the scores, a winner is declared. The test process for Zero1 Awards is almost the same as our review test process, expect that we don’t consider scores for features, price or design.

This is what makes our Zero1 Awards unique. Nowhere else will you get such laser-focus on the best performing products of the year, simply because most others ‘review’ products instead of testing them. For the Zero1 Awards, opinions of reviews aren’t considered. This is about pure performance and the ability of the product to do the job in the best possible way.

So, when you ask “What’s the best performing gaming laptop in India?”, you need to check our Zero1 Award winner of that category because that’s the only place where it’s only about pure performance and not about the features of the laptop or how it looks or how much it costs.

That’s also another reason why the Zero1 Awards are so important. Because we don’t look at the price, but only pure performance, we get to showcase products you might have missed or didn’t pay much attention to because of budget restrictions. That doesn’t mean this award caters only to the rich kids with deep pockets since most of the products in the list are usually expensive. But that’s not our rationale for doing it, though. The product that wins our Zero1 Award is considered the industry benchmark for the year. And what do brands love to do with benchmarks? Beat them of course! So think of the Zero1 Awards as a predictor of things to come next year. The new devices that will launch in 2020 will have to do better than the benchmark, and not just in terms of performance, but also price!

The iPhone 12 Mini supports 12W charging via MagSafe

One of the new features introduced by Apple in the iPhone 12 is MagSafe charging. The MagSafe charger magnetically attaches to the back of the iPhone and offers wireless charging. The MagSafe charging on the iPhone 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max offers 15W of fast charging but on the iPhone 12 Mini, it is limited to 12W of charging.

A user should plug the charger into the wall before placing the phone on it. According to Apple, “This allows MagSafe to verify it's safe to deliver maximum power. If you happen to place your iPhone on the MagSafe Charger before plugging into a power source, simply remove your iPhone from the MagSafe Charger, wait three seconds, and then put it back on to resume maximum power delivery”. Needless to say, if you put the MagSafe charger on the iPhone before plugging it into the wall, you will not get the maximum charging speed.

Apple officially launched the iPhone 12 family of smartphones in the mid of October. All the new iPhones support 5G networks and have a flat-edge design that’s reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5s. The new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are powered by the A14 Bionic processor, dual cameras on the back and a vivid display that’s more durable than ever, thanks to a new layer of Ceramic Shield.

Apple iPhone 12 mini starts at Rs 69,900 for the base 64GB storage variant, Rs 74,900 for the 128GB variant and Rs 84,900 for the 256GB variant. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 is priced starting at Rs 79,900 for the 64GB model followed by the 128GB variant that’s priced at Rs 84,900 for the 128GB variant and Rs 94,900 for the 256GB variant. You can learn the specifications and features of the iPhone 12 here.

Vampire: The Masquerade Is Getting A Battle-Royale Game

Novel development studio - Sharkmob, is currently working on a battle-royale game based on the cult classic - Vampire: The Masquerade franchise. Published by Paradox Interactive, the title is set to drop sometime in the latter half of 2021.

The announcement comes from a short teaser trailer that gives us a glimpse of the dark and moody setting, looming with bloodlust, players will be stepping into. As you would expect, players will be donning the roles of their own custom vampires, as they fight their way across the streets and rooftops of Prague. The game will be offering both solo and group modes for you to battle rivals and the hostile Entity, who is hellbent on exterminating the bloodthirsty lineage. Players will be armed with supernatural abilities, knives, guns and blood to grow stronger, fight their opponents and make it through to dawn break.

At the moment, fans of the beloved franchise are divided, seeing the new direction Paradox is taking with the game’s mythos, by some even calling it a mere cash-grab attempt. While others are simply excited to try out an online multiplayer game based on Vampires. The news must come as salt to the wounds, considering the long-awaited sequel, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 was yet again pushed back to 2021, just a couple of months ago. Another Vampire game set to come out in 2021 would be Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong, which was showcased earlier this year at Nacon Connect, of which you can check out further details here.

In addition to the battle-royale title, Sharkmob is also working on 2 more highly ambitious AAA quality titles that are powered by Unreal Engine. You can keep a tab on their upcoming projects here. If things go as planned, 2021 could be a good year for Vampire fans, as they get their hands on 3 unique titles.

Among Us to get new gameplay options, map, friend lists, colourblind accessibility, and more

Among Us has been one of the surprise hits of 2020. While the game itself was launched in 2018, its popularity really kicked off after it was played by some popular Twitch streamers. In order to keep up with the sudden surge in popularity, the developers have been at it trying to not only add new features but also fix any bugs and get rid of hackers.

The developers of the game, Innersloth, recently posted patch notes for a recent update to the beta version of the game as well as their roadmap. It was noted that the developers “have lots of things planned, but no real official roadmap. We play things pretty loose, so we can tackle what we think the game needs most. We also don’t want to promise anything and then not provide it so it’s a scary thing to share.”

Hackers

The developers note the presence of cheaters and hackers in the game. While the devs did push out an update, some cheats still work and on top of that, they have to deal with some new bugs. As such, it was noted that there will be no more server updates to fix “all of this” but rushing anti-cheat hacks is causing bugs. As such, the process is slower. They also assured players that any threats made by hackers are baseless, so players should either ban them from the room or leave the room.

Patch notes

When talking about its latest update to Among Us. The developers note that the game will now offer an option for Anonymous Voting. This will make all votes appear as grey. Further, there are now Task Bar modes where which would change the way the in-game Task Bar would behave. ‘Always’ would make it work as before, ‘Meeting’ would only update the bar during meetings, and ‘Invisible’ which removes the task bar entirely. Further, sabotaging comms in the MIRA map will now clear the Security Logs. The final notable change is the addition of symbols to the coloured wire matching mini-game in order to assist colour-blind players. The rest includes bug fixes and cosmetics to the meeting screen.

Roadmap

In the future, the developers plan to add accounts to the game, hopefully by December. This will allow them to report accounts for cheating or for toxic comments. However, they note that things like friend lists will take time and will be implemented later. They Innersloth also noted that they are working on a new map that would be bigger than Polus and that it will be themed after Henry Stickmin, another series of games developed by the developers.

The devs also note that while they are working on a few language options for the game, the translations are a bit rough and are planning to get professionals to translate the game into multiple languages. Further, the developers say that they plan to add even more features to help the colour-blind play the game.
