Lionsgate Play silently enters the streaming ring in India to take on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+Hotstar

Back in July, we reported that Lionsgate had partnered up with JioFiber and Airtel to deliver a wide slate of content that is also localized. Basically, JioFiber customers received access to Lionsgate Play’s blockbuster lineup of Hollywood films and other popular movies on JioTV+. Lionsgate Play is essentially a premium streaming service from Lionsgate India and Starz, offers curated Hollywood content for Indian consumers, with much of the content available in multiple Indian languages as well. But now, Lionsgate has launched its own app called Lionsgate Play in India. It is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App store as well.

The app just had a soft launch so do not expect the full feature set as well as a slate of content to be available right now. We downloaded the app on Android for a subscription of Rs 99 per month and then received access to a bunch of Hollywood movies. We noticed a ton of genres from your typical blockbusters to more indie fare. These shows and films are also available with localized language dubs for the various audiences in India. Regional-speaking cinema lovers can enjoy Lionsgate Play’s blockbuster movies, including  The Hunger Games franchise, John Wick series, Knives Out, La La Land, The Twilight Saga and many more, in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bhojpuri as well. Clearly, localisation is one of the key selling points of the service. Lionsgate has also stated that the pricing is still tentative at the moment and are not the finalized plans.

Users can opt for a 14-day trial, while the monthly subscription rate comes in at Rs 99 with an annual subscription of Rs 699, but as explained above, these prices are tentative. Again, do note that this is a soft launch with a full-fledged launch planned for the first week of December as stated by a Lionsgate representative. While the app has just been launched in India, it isn't the full line up of content and features with more to be added as the app heads towards a full launch in December.

Netflix APK version 7821 hints that the service could add a sleep timer

It looks like Netflix is adding a sleep timer option to the streaming app so that the service shuts off on its own rather than playing till your device’s battery runs out. The information comes from XDA developers that has “discovered the evidence of the new feature in the latest version of Netflix, which recently rolled out on Android”. Please do remember that just because the code was discovered doesn’t mean that the feature will definitely launch.

Until now there is no way to activate a sleep timer on Netflix unless the device you are watching it on supports a sleep timer. For example, if you are watching Netflix via your Smart TV, you can set a sleep timer on the TV to turn off. But the Netflix app itself doesn’t support the feature yet. The feature would be a welcome addition for those that consume content on their smartphone or tablet while sleeping. According to XDA, “we could not find any related assets, such as layouts or images, nor could we find any related code in the Netflix 7.82.1 APK. Still, the string suggests that Netflix will add a sleep timer button to the video player UI”. It looks like currently, Netflix gives users a “are you still watching” prompt when consuming content, but it looks this prompt is quite random.

This isn’t the first time we have seen hints of a new feature in the Netflix app code. Last month it was discovered that Netflix could add an audio-only mode to its app letting users listen to content with the display off. While this would help save data, it was also ideal for those that like listening to documentaries more than watching it. Think of it as a podcast. The audio-only feature isn't live yet. You can learn more about it here.

Android users can slow down or speed up the playback of content on their devices. You can learn more about it here.  If you are looking to watch Netflix for free without a subscription, you can learn how to do so here.

Some older MacBook Pros are getting bricked after the macOS Big Sur update: Report

If you are thinking about updating to the new macOS Big Sur, then we say, you might want to hold off for some time if you have a 2013 or 2014 MacBook Pro. Some users are reporting that updating to the new OS is bricking their Macs. According to MacRumours, “A large number of late 2013 and mid 2014 13-inch MacBook Pro owners are reporting that the macOS Big Sur update is bricking their machines”. MacRumors has highlighted that apart on their own forum, Reddit and Apple’s support page are filled with users highlighting the issue as well.

There is currently no known information about a fix for the issue. MacRumors highlights, “Key reset combinations, including NVRAM, SMC, safe mode, and internet recovery, are all reportedly inaccessible after attempting to install the update, leaving no way to bypass the static black screen”. Since the 2013 and 2014 MacBook Pros are the oldest ones supported, it isn’t clear whether this is because of compatibility, or a hardware issue.

Apple announced macOS Big Sur back in June 2020 and the OS went live for users to download last week. You can check if your Mac is compatible with the new OS and how to download Big Sur here.

The PS5 is launching in these countries on November 19, sadly India isnt one of them

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, you’ll know that the PS5 is about to launch in Europe, Asia, South Africa, The Middle East and even in South America, tomorrow, November 19. You want to know one country that isn’t on that list? You guessed right, India is clearly missing from the November 19 launch of the PlayStation 5. We’ve reported the fact that even Sony India has refused to reveal a launch date for the PS5 in India. We’re not sure what the hold-up really is, but it is what it is.

There have been rumours that Sony is planning on releasing the PS5 sometime in December, but those are unsubstantiated and the official word from the horse’s mouth is that there is no release date for India, right now. Just a few days ago, the Sony India PlayStation page posted a photo that asked Indian PS5 fans to continue to monitor the official Sony PlayStation channels with no word on an Indian launch date. Needless to say, fans were not having it and let Sony know their displeasure.

And, it hasn't been a problem free launch for the PS5 either. The console has had a few issues at launch that you can find out more about, right here. To be fair to the other side, we did report that the Xbox Series X/S may be facing supply shortages and have actually been sold out on both Amazon and Fipkart. You can read more about that here.
