Was Apple lying about its water-resistant claims

The Italian competition authority, The Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM), on Monday slapped a fine of €10M (roughly ₹87,90,85,660 directly converted) on Apple for misleading their product claims on the water-resistant ability of the devices.

The devices included are from 2011 to 2019 namely from the iPhone 8 to iPhone 11 under the fine. The fine was announced on two grounds. First, in promotional materials, Apple claimed that their phones were water-resistant upto a depth of 4-meters for upto 30 minutes. The AGCM said this was only under laboratory conditions with still and pure water which is not likely a real case scenario.

The AGCM claims that Apple’s marketing misleads its consumers into believing that devices were waterproof rather than water-resistant with the limitations not given in the advertisements. Second, a disclaimer that Apple’s warranty excludes damage by liquids was deemed an aggressive attempt to circumvent consumer rights obligations by the authority given the marketing of Apple.

Apple places a liquid damage indicator inside the phones which turn colour from white to pink when in contact with liquid and checking the indicator is a standard procedure for the repair staff when the phone comes in for repair and if the phone was under warranty and it showed water-damage then Apple would be voiding the warranty of the product which was against the consumer rights and marketing of Apple.

Apple has declined to comment on the matter.

Apple has previously been fined by other competition authorities for different situations such as slowing down phones with older batteries forcing the users to upgrade to a newer model. The tech giant has 60-days to appeal the decision from the date it was notified. This comes at a tome when Apple is looking at moving production from China to Vietnam and you can read more about that here.

Many users unable to pre-register for FAU-G, nCore Games to issue fix soon

nCore Games finally made its highly-anticipated game, FAU-G: Fearless And United Guards available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store. Unfortunately, it seems like not all users are able to pre-register. A number of users have taken to social media to complain that their devices are seemingly incompatible with the game. The reason for this is not certain yet. Many claim that their device offers plenty of power to run games like FAU-G. Some users say that the game is listed as "incompatible" with their device even though they have a device with 6GB RAM or even 8GB RAM. It should be noted that the game’s listing on the Google Play Store does not reveal its requirements. Rather, the sections for size, and Android requirements list it as “varies with device.”

Digit.in reached out to Vishal Gondal, Advisor and Investor in nCore Games, and he gave a pretty succinct statement saying, “We have identified the problem and will be issuing a fix soon.” So players should just hold tight as the issue should be fixed, and they will be able to pre-register for the game soon. It should be noted that we were able to pre-register for the device on our OnePlus 6T Mclaren Edition that packs 10GB RAM and currently runs Android 10.

It should be noted that we still do not know when the game will be available. Regardless, the fact that the game is listed on the Google Play Store is a pretty big step in its own right. It also revealed a bunch of other information that we could glean from the listing. For starters, we finally got a look at what appears to be the main menu of the game, which suggests that it will feature two in-game currencies. Most likely one will be a free currency, while the other will be a premium currency that players will have to pay to get. There is also an in-game store that will allow players to make in-game purchases.

New Xbox update lets users pre-load games with a new Coming Soon section, adds Optimized for X|S badge

Whether you have an Xbox One or the new Series X/S, you can check out the November update for the console which is now live. The update brings with it a bunch of interesting features, but if you have been a part of Xbox’s insider program, then you have been enjoying these features for some time now. The update brings with it a lot of features including dynamic background options and an Auto HDR indicator in the guide, “Optimized for X|S” badges for compatible games as well as letting Game Pass members pre-load games with a new Coming Soon section. Let’s check out some of these features in detail.

Dynamic Backgrounds for Xbox Series X/S

You can add dynamic backgrounds to the Xbox Series X/S.

With the Xbox Series X/S, you can customize the background of the home screen with motion and colour. The update adds six new options. This includes homages to previous generations of Xbox consoles and others based on popular profile themes.

Identify which games have auto-HDR

As the title suggests, you will now be able to see which games are implementing auto HDR. For those unaware, the Xbox Series X|S can apply HDR to some games, enriching the experience especially if you have an HDR capable TV. According to Microsoft, “When you open the guide during a game with Auto HDR running, you’ll see a new tag to let you know the game is benefiting from this feature”.

Optimised for Series X/S badge

Optimised for Series X/S badge is visible on compatible games.

The Xbox has over 30 games optimized for the Series X/S including games like Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and The Falconeer and many more. Since the Xbox Series X/S are backwards compatible with Xbox One, Xbox 360 and OG Xbox games, this badge makes it easier to identify which games are optimised for the new consoles. Players will be able to see the new “X|S” badge to their tiles in My Games and Apps, in both the Games and Full Library views. Players can also use the Filter button to see only “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S” games.

Add family member accounts during setup

As the title suggests, users will be able to add family members during the setup of the console to ensure everyone at home can play as soon as the console is ready to go.

Pre-install games that are “Coming soon” to Xbox Game Pass!

If you see a game you are looking forward to in the “coming soon” section of Game Pass and would like to keep it ready to go on day 1, then you can pre-install it on the Xbox.

A lot of the features mentioned above have been available to Xbox insiders for some time. If you would like to get your hands on some of these features early and help test them before the final rollout, you can do so by joining the Xbox insider program. You can learn more about it here.

Xiaomi could announce Mi 11 series as early as January 2021

Xiaomi Mi 11 flagship smartphone series is rumoured to launch as early as January 2021, according to the latest reports. The Mi 10 lineup was announced in February, earlier this year and if a recent tip is to be believed, Xiaomi could be planning to host the Mi 11 launch a month before usual. Interestingly, Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun is making an appearance during the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2020 later today where he could reveal more details about the Mi 11 series.

Mi 11 (tentatively named) has been sent to the Internet for filing, and it is estimated that it will be announced next month, and the production capacity will start to climb [吃瓜]

— Digital Chat Station (@StationChat) November 30, 2020

According to a post by Digital Chat Station, the Mi 11 is expected to be announced in January and the company has sent the phone for filing. The Mi 11 will likely be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon processor rumoured to be the Snapdragon 875 which will be unveiled in just hours from now. So in all likelihood, the January release does seem possible.

Like Xiaomi, OnePlus is also reportedly planning to launch the OnePlus 9 series a month before usual. The company could announce the successor to the OnePlus 8 series sometime in March 2021. Since then, the rumour mill is constantly churning out leaks and speculative renders for the OnePlus 9 series. However, there is no confirmation on the kind of hardware the Mi 11 is slated to feature except for some rumours here and there.

Xiaomi Mi 11 and Mi 11 Pro are expected to be powered by the rumoured next-generation flagship Snapdragon processor. The Mi 11 could have a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera but overall will likely have trimmed down features. The Mi 11 Pro is rumoured to feature a QHD+ display that supports 120Hz refresh rate. It could have a 50MP primary camera along with a 12MP telephoto camera but there is no information on the other cameras.

The Mi 10 Pro is Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone for 2020 but it did not launch in India. It has a premium finish with a large display that curves on the sides along with minimal bezels on top and bottom. The Mi 11 Pro has quad cameras on the back with a 108MP primary camera, two telephoto cameras and a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera. It is equipped with a 4,500mAh battery that supports 50W fast charging and 30W fast wireless charging.

We expect Xiaomi to offer powerful and flagship-grade hardware on the upcoming Mi 11 series as well. The company could make an announcement about the Mi 11 series during the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2020 where co-founder Lei Jun is set to make an appearance. If you want to catch the Summit live, here’s how to watch the launch of the next Snapdragon flagship processor.
