Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 888 5G processor: How is it different from the Snapdragon 865

Qualcomm has announced its next-generation flagship processor, the Snapdragon 888, that will be powering the high-end smartphone segment in 2021. The chipset was announced during the ongoing Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2020 which is the company’s annual showcase for next-generation mobile platforms and technologies.

The new chip is the successor to the Snapdragon 865 chipset that we saw in almost every major flagship and premium-tier smartphone this year. The Snapdragon 888 is fabricated on a 5nm process which indicates significant gains in performance and power efficiency over the 865 which was manufactured on a 7nm process.

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 888 5G processor

During the announcement, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun took to the stage to announce that the Mi 11 will be one of the first smartphones to be powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor.

“Snapdragon 888 is the most powerful mobile platform from Qualcomm Technologies ever. In addition to the industry-leading 5G connectivity, it has brought groundbreaking breakthroughs and innovations in AI, gaming, and camera. I'm glad that our new flagship smartphone Mi11 will be one of the first devices with Snapdragon 888. This is another cutting-edge product from us and will be loaded with various hardcore technologies,” he said.

How is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 different from the Snapdragon 865?

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 features a third-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 5G modem that succeeds the X55 and brings worldwide compatibility with mmWave and sub-6 across all major bands, 5G carrier aggregation, global multi-SIM and more.

With the new sixth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine, the chip has made advancements to improve performance and power efficiency by delivering 26 TOPS (tera operations per second) in comparison to 15 TOPS on the Snapdragon 865. It also features the second generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub that allows low-power always-on AI processes to function for AI-based features.

Qualcomm claims that with the Snapdragon 888, it has tripled down on computation photography intending to “transform smartphones into professional-quality cameras”. The chipset is home to the new Qualcomm Spectra ISP that can capture photos and videos at 2.7 gigapixels per second and is touted to be 35% faster than the Spectra 480 ISP.

The Snapdragon 888 also brings third-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming features. The previous generation of Snapdragon Elite Gaming introduced updatable GPU drivers, support for up to 144Hz refresh rate display and more. Qualcomm will be detailing the new chipset on the second day of the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2020, and we will update this story as and when those details are revealed.

The new Xbox Series XS can emulate legacy PS2 games

The PS5 only supports native backward compatibility to PS4 games, however, you can access the older generation games by using Sony’s PlayStation Now game streaming service, which isn't officially available in India. However, using the RetroArch emulator gamers can play PS2 games on their Xbox Series S/X consoles.

You can also do this by paying a registration fee of $19 to become a part of Microsoft’s developer program and then download the “Dev mode application” from the app store. After downloading the app from the app store, you can connect to your Xbox to a web browser and add the RetroArch UWA (Universal Windows Application) files and natively run the application on the Xbox console. To note the limitation you have a file size cap on the application so you won’t be able to run the games larger than 2GB.

Microsoft does not officially support this kind of emulation and the RetroArch emulator is still a work in progress and there are some glitches while playing games in emulation but despite the catch, the games have the same quality as on the original PS2 console and also support the Xbox controller right away.

It would be interesting to see how Sony plays up to this emulation workaround on Xbox as it is notable to see that new consoles can emulate older generation hardware quite efficiently. It is not yet clear whether Sony wishes to introduce a native emulator for previous generation consoles or relies on its cloud streaming services.

In fact, we've got the PS5 with us and here's what we think after spending 24 hours with it.

Was Apple lying about its water-resistant claims

The Italian competition authority, The Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM), on Monday slapped a fine of €10M (roughly ₹87,90,85,660 directly converted) on Apple for misleading their product claims on the water-resistant ability of the devices.

The devices included are from 2011 to 2019 namely from the iPhone 8 to iPhone 11 under the fine. The fine was announced on two grounds. First, in promotional materials, Apple claimed that their phones were water-resistant upto a depth of 4-meters for upto 30 minutes. The AGCM said this was only under laboratory conditions with still and pure water which is not likely a real case scenario.

The AGCM claims that Apple’s marketing misleads its consumers into believing that devices were waterproof rather than water-resistant with the limitations not given in the advertisements. Second, a disclaimer that Apple’s warranty excludes damage by liquids was deemed an aggressive attempt to circumvent consumer rights obligations by the authority given the marketing of Apple.

Apple places a liquid damage indicator inside the phones which turn colour from white to pink when in contact with liquid and checking the indicator is a standard procedure for the repair staff when the phone comes in for repair and if the phone was under warranty and it showed water-damage then Apple would be voiding the warranty of the product which was against the consumer rights and marketing of Apple.

Apple has declined to comment on the matter.

Apple has previously been fined by other competition authorities for different situations such as slowing down phones with older batteries forcing the users to upgrade to a newer model. The tech giant has 60-days to appeal the decision from the date it was notified. This comes at a tome when Apple is looking at moving production from China to Vietnam and you can read more about that here.
