Instagrams new Live Rooms feature will let you add up to three guests in live broadcast

Instagram on Tuesday rolled out the 'Live Room' feature, which allows users to go live with up to 3 other users (or 'guests') simultaneously. The feature was being tested in India for some time and is the only country apart from Indonesia where it's rolled out on a broader level.

"From the launch of Reels to the testing and rollout of Live Rooms, India is playing a crucial role in the way products are being designed for the future," Ajit Mohan, Vice President and Managing Director, Facebook India, said in a statement.

The company revealed that in March, Instagram Live views in India grew 60 per cent on a week-on-week basis. This makes it even more evident why India is a key market for all the big feature releases from the company.

It's been a long time since Instagram launched the live broadcast feature on the platform. In October 2017, Instagram added a feature that allowed users to broadcast live with a friend. It lets you invite anyone watching the broadcast to join, although only two people could appear in the broadcast simultaneously, shown through a split-screen. The owner of the broadcast can add and remove 'guests' during the live.

Now with the ability to go Live with up to three users, creators and influencers can now host better live sessions with a more diverse source of content and information while reaching a wider audience. Lots of creators use Instagram live as a primary source of engagement, host talk shows, podcasts and even jam sessions. The ability to go live with up to three users will also cater to users who had to rely on other platforms for a group live session.

Instagram says the rollout for 'Live Rooms' has begun and will be available to everyone in India and Indonesia soon.

How to use Instagram's 'Live Rooms' feature

To go live with multiple users simultaneously, swipe right from the home screen to open the Instagram camera, or tap on the ‘+’ icon. Swipe to ‘Live’ from the list of camera options and tap the shutter button to go live. Now, to add guests, tap the camera/Rooms icon and type the username to add them or simply accept the request if they've sent one.

Lionsgate Play streaming service officially launches in India for Rs 99 per month

It looks like there's another streaming service in town. Lionsgate Play is the latest offering from the Studio and it has just been officially launched in India. The app did go through a soft launch a few weeks ago and is priced at Rs 99 for the monthly subscription and Rs 699 for an annual subscription. The app already has a host of content on it with more coming down the line. With shows from channels like the BBC, Starz, and more, we should be seeing a lot of quality content on Lionsgate Play.

Commenting on the launch Mr. Jeffrey A. Hirsch, President and Chief Executive Officer, Starz said, “India has always been a key market for us. The large and diverse population, increased data usage in urban and rural markets, and adoption of OTT across all demographics created an exciting opportunity for us to launch Lionsgate Play. We’re confident that our unique, exclusive and exceptionally curated content will generate a great response from Indian audiences.”

Lionsgate Play slate of content

Mr. Rohit Jain, Managing Director, Lionsgate South Asia, added, “We will also be launching Indian originals in the coming months, featuring untold edgy urban stories from some of the best creative minds in the Indian film industry” continued Mr. Jain.  “And we will continue our Lionsgate Play journey by adding to our deep roster of premium content through partnerships with exciting millennial stars like Kriti Sanon, Tiger Shroff and Sanjana Sanghi increasing the breadth and scope of entertainment for our subscribers.”

At the launch of the ap, Lionsgate also said that all content on the app will be localized, meaning that all the shows and movies on the app will come with regional audio options. This could go a long way in attracting more subscribers as, right now, it is the only app with that option. As far as new content is concerned, the app has lined up The Hotel Continental (John Wick spin-off) and much more. Their aim is to have content that is ‘edgy, urban and provocative’. Speaking about the recent regulatory order on OTT platforms by the government, Lionsgate Play intends to follow all the regulations set by the committee in charge. Here’s a brief look at some of the newer content on the app.

The Anna Kendrick starrer Love Life, a fresh take on a romantic comedy anthology series about the journey from first love to lasting love.

No Man’s Land is a Syrian civil war series that resonates with relatable themes like first love, fear of loss and family sacrifice set against the backdrop of war; and

Lionsgate Play No mans Land

The Goes Wrong Show, a laugh out loud comedy series with each episode having a different theme, including a period romance, spy thriller, a Deep South melodrama, and a Christmas fable.

The streaming giant will also premiere movies such as the Jennifer Lopez starrer Hustlers, Gerald Butler’s action thriller Angel Has Fallen, the fantasy thriller Hellboy, and the action comedy The Gentlemen, starring Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant, just to name a few, with something for every audience.

Lionsgate also talked about how the app is marketed as a partner rather than a competitor to other OOT platforms like Netflix, Prime Video etc. There are no added charges in therms of pricing either as the company follows a ‘one service, one price’ philosophy. The company has also partnered with telecom companies like Reliance Jio, Airtel and more for a more seamless mobile experience as well. The app is also available with the Fire TV Stick.

Apple silently updates Facetime call resolution to 1080p for iPhone 8 and above

Apple has silently added support for full HD (1080p) video calling via Facetime. The update is said to hit iPhone 8 and above which supported HD (720p) calling till now. The full HD calling will only be available over Wi-Fi connection and will be limited to HD (720p) on 4G on all iPhones. The new iPhone 12 series buyers, however,  do have an advantage as they can make use 5G to make 1080p Facetime calls.

The report mentions that the upgrade in resolution might have arrived with the iOS 14.2 update. The update was first spotted by MacMagazine, who first noted that Apple didn't mention the upgrade in resolution for Facetime calls in the release notes. They later found out that Apple has updated the spec pages that specify the resolution (1080p) in brackets for Facetime over Wi-Fi for phones like iPhone XR. We also went through Apple India store and found the same listed for iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone XR.

iPhone SE spec listing mentions (1080p)

The report claims that the spec pages did not list video calls via FaceTime HD (1080p) until November 4th, but it started to appear after November 9th.

Arrives at the right time

Full HD video calls on Facetime isn't as surprising as iPhone 8 being a part of this upgrade is. The Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were released in 2017, with support for full HD video from the front camera but Apple had restricted the Facetime call to HD resolution till now.

If you've used Facetime, you know that Facetime has been very consistent with its call quality, which has improved even more with faster internet, powerful chipsets and better front cameras. But 2020 has been the year which has changed the way the world looked at video calling, and Apple making progress with Facetime does not come as a surprise.

iPhone 12 users are facing connectivity issues worldwide on LTE and 5G networks

The new iPhone 12’s are breaking sales records for Apple, but for a month or so some users have been reporting connectivity issues on their new iPhone on the Apple forums.

As per the users, many of them see a drop in the network just after a few minutes of usage. The issue is most prominent while driving or travelling. The issue is present in all the models of the Apple iPhone 12, as the phone drops network connectivity either 5G or LTE in the areas with good network reception. There are numerous threads on Reddit, concerning the same issue reported by multiple users worldwide. Indian users are also affected by this issue on their 4G networks.

People have reported that their signal drops suddenly before disappearing and to get back the signal you either have to restart your phone or toggle airplane mode on or off. The issue seems to be when switching between towers while travelling and for some unlucky users this happens even while standing still.

A particular user reports the following on Apple forums:

“Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator, and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support, and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

Baseband and Telephony Logging

CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech, and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed ahead and I found a lot of people on Reddit talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article. I never had such issue with the 11pro.”

The issue is affecting a significant portion of users and has over 500 users following the same issue on their phones. This likely seems to be a software issue and should be patched by Apple in the next iOS update.
