Xiaomi Mi 11 is the first Snapdragon 888 phone confirmed to launch on December 28

The Xiaomi Mi 11 is slated to be the first phone to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor that was unveiled earlier this month. The company has confirmed the launch of the Mi 11 on December 28 in China. It was previously speculated that the Mi 11 series could launch before the end of 2020 and rightly so, the launch event has been scheduled for December 28 at 7:30 PM local time (5 PM IST).

Xiaomi has shared a poster on Weibo that reveals the launch date and time for the upcoming Mi 11 series. Since we are just days away from the launch of the first flagship powered by the Snapdragon 888, we can expect Xiaomi to start teasing some key features about the upcoming lineup. The Mi 11 is rumoured to be joined by the Mi 11 Pro at launch.

Xiaomi Mi 11 is the first Snapdragon 888 phone

During the announcement for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, many smartphone makers revealed their plans to be the first to put out a phone powered by the latest processor in the market. Some of these companies include Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo and more. Now it seems like Xiaomi wants to be the first to claim the title for announcing the world’s first Snapdragon 888-powered smartphone, something that it reserves for the beginning of the year.

Having said that, we are hearing rumours that a lot of companies may announce their new flagship phones powered by the new processor earlier than expected. As per a previous report, OnePlus may launch the OnePlus 9 series sometime in mid-March 2021.

The Mi 11 could have a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera but overall will likely have trimmed down features. The Mi 11 Pro is rumoured to feature a QHD+ display that supports 120Hz refresh rate. It could have a 50MP primary camera along with a 12MP telephoto camera but there is no information on the other cameras.

The Mi 10 Pro is Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone for 2020, but it did not launch in India. It has a premium finish with a large display that curves on the sides along with minimal bezels on top and bottom. The Mi 11 Pro has quad cameras on the back with a 108MP primary camera, two telephoto cameras and a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera. It is equipped with a 4,500mAh battery that supports 50W fast charging and 30W fast wireless charging.

We expect to know more about the Mi 11 and Mi 11 Pro as we near the official launch date on December 28.

Cyberpunk 2077 save file could get corrupted if it exceeds 8MB in size

The internet is flooded with the hilarious bugs and the crazy, broken physics of the buggy Cyberpunk 2077 since its release. Developer CD Projekt Red has already issued two hotfixes to shore up some bugs in the game. But, a new issue that is not at all hilarious is that some players are reporting that save files are being corrupt after exceeding a certain file size limit.

As spotted by EuroGamer, if your Cyberpunk 2077 save file is corrupted, you will see this prompt when you try to load the game:

Cyberpunk 2077 corrupted save file image

There is no clear clue as to what might be causing the save files to be corrupt but if the file size exceeds 8MB, it seems that the save file becomes corrupt. There are a lot of people on CD Projekt Red’s forum page reporting the same.

In a GoG support document, CD Projekt Red says that corrupted files cannot be recovered quoting: “unfortunately the save is damaged and can’t be recovered.” As per this document, if you have been investing a lot of play time into the game or collected a lot of items resulting in the save file size to be larger than 8MB, you might be in trouble. Any gamer would be disappointed to have their save file corrupt in a game that is literally littered with stuff to pick up and exceed the 8MB threshold.

In the GoG document, the company says: “The save file size limit might be increased in one of the future patches, but the corrupted files will remain that way.” but even after increasing the limit size in the future, the current files would be rendered useless making it a no-brainer to wait till a patch solves the problem.

A moderator on CD Projekt forums has provided some suggestions to recover your saved progress. The studio has promised two major updates in January and February. Maybe the company will make the changes in these in the upcoming patches or release one sooner so that the progress of the player is not lost in between.

Microsoft is developing its own ARM chips to power Surface devices and Data Centers

Following Apple's footsteps, Microsoft is now designing its own ARM chips for servers and Surface devices as reported by Bloomberg. The CPUs will be used in Microsoft’s Azure cloud services based on ARM as reported in the post by Bloomberg. The tech giant is also on the lookout for designing a custom chip for Surface devices based on ARM architecture.

Currently, the data centers and server infrastructure is led by Intel-based x86 CPU as well as Microsoft uses it to exclusively power the Azure Cloud servers. Even the current Surface devices are powered by Intel processors. Although Microsoft has worked with Nvidia, Qualcomm, and AMD to power its Surface devices like Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro X to show a shift move from Intel.

Microsoft Surface 3

The concept of ARM chips is not a new segment for Microsoft as they have previously worked with Qualcomm on the SQ1 processor for the Surface Pro X and then released an SQ2 couple of months later as a refresh to the previous version. The company had augmented Qualcomm to custom design the chip for the Surface Device. While these chips were manufactured by Qualcomm the new chips from Microsoft are to be engineered and designed solely by Microsoft.

A move for server-side applications to ARM from Microsoft is a significant change particularly for Intel, as Intel has been dominating the server space with almost 90 percent share of the market. The news from Microsoft plunged Intel’s stock by upto 6.3 percent on the day of the announcement.

Surface devices are still a smaller scale of market for CPUs in the PC industry, the report on this decision would still be a blow to Intel, as Apple has already announced their own M1 chips for Macs based on ARM as a move to shift from Intel for better performance and power consumption. AMD is also hyping up their own EPYC processors for server market with a higher core count than Intel competing in the industry. “Because silicon is a foundational building block for technology, we’re continuing to invest in our own capabilities in areas like design, manufacturing and tools, while also fostering and strengthening partnerships with a wide range of chip providers,” said Microsoft spokesperson Frank Shaw in a statement to TheVerge.

Garena Free Fire announces partnership with One-Punch Man

Garena has confirmed that it will bring content from the popular Manga and Anime series, One-Punch Man over to the game. The series’ protagonist is a supremely overpowered hero who can defeat most enemies with a single punch.    “We’re excited to welcome one of Japan’s most iconic heroes into the Free Fire universe. We’re always looking to create novel, in-game content infused with influences from across the world and believe that our partnership with One-Punch Man will offer our global community of players even more opportunities to battle in style,” said Harold Teo, Free Fire Producer at Garena.

It is not yet known if characters from the Manga/Anime will make an appearance in Free Fire. All we know is that costumes based on the character will be available in the online store along with in-game items and collectables.

Garena’s most recent partnership saw the addition of Cristiano Ronaldo as an in-game character in Free Fire. The new character, Chrono is based on his likeness and gives players the ability to use his unique power, Time Warp. This encases the character in a force field that not only protects the player from damage, but also increases movement speed. The new character was made available to players from December 19. You can learn more about the character here.

Besides the new character, the new OB25 update also rolled out this month and introduced a bunch of new features and additions. The biggest of which was the addition of Vector Akimbo. Players can now pick up two Vectors and use them in single or dual-wield action. When dual-wielding, the range and accuracy of the weapon is reduced, but the fire rate is increased by quite a bit, making it a devastating weapon in close range.
