PUBG Mobile India launch remains uncertain as new leadership take the reins

PUBG Mobile India launch remains without a date but a new development in PUBG India subsidiary may spring up some hope in the hearts of fans who have been waiting for weeks now. PUBG Mobile was banned by the Government of India on September 2 citing security and privacy concerns along with other 118 apps. The company was quick to cut ties with Tencent, the company with the license to operate the game in India. Soon after, PUBG Corporation announced that a special version of PUBG Mobile was being developed that is in-line with Indian culture.

Krafton Inc. the parent company of PUBG Corp has appointed Aneesh Aravind as the Country Manager for PUBG Mobile in India. Aravind’s last stint was notably with Tencent, the game’s previous publisher. Moreover, the company is also busy expanding its team in India and more people have joined the development of PUBG Mobile India in recent weeks. Krafton has also brought on Karan Pathak as the Senior Esports Manager along with Arpita Priyadarshini as the Senior Community Manager.

Interestingly, all of them were previously working with Tencent and have now joined the PUBG India team that has the license to publish PUBG Mobile in India. That said, there is no official update from the company as to when we can expect PUBG Mobile India to resume operations in the country. The last we heard from the company was when it released a website and a teaser video featuring three popular PUBG Mobile players, Aaditya ‘Dynamo’ Sawant, Jonathan Amaral and Chetan ‘Kronten’ Chandgude.

PUBG India

PUBG has also established an Indian subsidiary and has announced a partnership with Microsoft to use its Azure cloud services to store users data. These developments, however, have not led to any positive conclusion for the game’s impending launch.

According to previous reports (1,2), multiple RTI responses reveal that the Indian government remains fixated on the ongoing ban on PUBG Mobile in India. “MeitY does not grant permission for starting of any websites / mobile Apps / service. Accordingly, MeitY has not granted permission to PUBG / PUBG mobile India,” reads one RTI response from the government. PUBG India officials have reportedly tried to meet with the government but are yet to receive any response for their request. Additionally, the National Child Rights Association has also opposed the launch of PUBG Mobile in India as it first wants appropriate legislations to be put in place for such games before allowing PUBG India to relaunch the game in the country.

PUBG Mobile India is a custom-version being developed for the Indian market and features a virtual simulation ground, clothed characters, green damage effects, restriction settings and more. Here are answers to some commonly asked questions about the return of PUBG Mobile in India. PUBG Mobile was also the highest grossing mobile game of 2020 and you can read more about it here.

Reliance to relaunch JioPhone in early 2021 priced under Rs 1,000 in India: Report

Reliance Jio is planning to relaunch the JioPhone in the first quarter of 2021 in India, according to a new report. The company is looking to reach out to potential users in smaller towns and villages that are still on 2G networks and is expected to launch the JioPhone once again. Reliance was reportedly in talks with domestic and global phone manufacturers to produce entry-level 5G smartphones. Earlier in July this year, Jio Platforms received an investment of Rs 33,737 crores from Google to develop entry-level 5G smartphones.

According to a report by The Economic Times (ET) that cites senior industry executives, Reliance will relaunch its affordable 4G JioPhone in India and will be priced under Rs 1,000. The JioPhone was launched back in 2017 and was succeeded by the JioPhone 2 in 2018. However, the JioPhone faced supply chain issues that made it unavailable for the better part of this year. The new report is in line with an earlier report by 91Mobiles that claimed the JioPhone price in India will increase by Rs 300.

“The JioPhone was last sold at Rs 699, but it will be difficult to match that pricing now due to increase in component costs post Covid-19 and import duties,” the source told ET. Moreover, Reliance aims to launch a subscription plan bundled with the JioPhone which corroborates with the previous report. The JioPhone relaunch could see Reliance offer it with a recharge pack of Rs 125 increasing the price of the phone to Rs 1,124.

Reliance also plans on making the JioPhone available in more than 800,000 retail outlets after the phone remained unavailable during 2020 due to constant issues in components sourcing and supply chain.

Reliance is looking to relaunch the JioPhone

The JioPhone features a 2.4-inch QVGA display with an alphanumeric keypad with a 4-way navigation toggle wheel and support for SD card slot. There is a 2MP camera on the back and a VGA camera upfront.

It is powered by a Qualcomm SoC and runs on KaiOS with support for WhatsApp, Facebook, Google Assistant and more. This is paired with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. There’s an option to increase the storage space by upto 128GB by using microSD card.

The JioPhone comes with a 2,000mAh battery that offers upto 12 hours of battery life and upto 15 days of standby time.

— Indranil Chakraborty (@Iamnil7) December 23, 2020 More details of the Mi 10i leaked ahead of the launch

Soon after Xiaomi teased the upcoming smartphone, popular leakster Mukul Sharma tweeted official-looking renders of the Mi 10i 5G. The shared renders of the Mi 10i share striking similarities with the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G, which was launched in China a few months ago.

Leaked images of the Mi 10i by Mukul Sharma

The leaked image also lines up with the teasers, shedding light on details like a 108MP camera, 120Hz refresh rate display and Snapdragon 750G chipset. The image and the details fall in line with previous reports where the Mi 10i was spotted on Geekbench, hinting that Xiaomi might bring the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G as the Mi 10i to India.

If the Mi 10i is the same device as the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G, it's likely to have the same core hardware as well. The Note 9 Pro 5G has a 6.67-inch Full HD+ display with 120Hz refresh rate and a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera. It has a quad-camera setup on the back that consists of a primary 108MP camera that uses an ISOCELL HM2 sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. There’s a 16MP camera on the front for selfies.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G is equipped with a 4,820mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging out-of-the-box. Going by the teasers, the Mi 10i has a circular camera module similar to the Note 9 Pro 5G and the back is also made of glass.
