OnePlus reveals OxygenOS 11 update plans for Nord, 7 series and 7T series

OnePlus has revealed OxygenOS 11 update schedule for the OnePlus Nord, OnePlus 7 series and OnePlus 7T series. The company has been able to release OxygenOS 11 update for OnePlus 8 series based on Android 11 but other phones in its catalogue are yet to receive an update to the latest Android version. OnePlus has finally come out clean over the OxygenOS 11 rollout plans for OnePlus Nord, OnePlus 7 and 7T series.

As per a post on OnePlus forums, the company is planning to release the first OxygenOS 11 open beta build for the OnePlus Nord sometime next week. After the issues are fixed, the final build will be rolled out to everyone in a staged manner. The company will be collecting user feedback from those on the open beta build and will fine-tune the software for the final build. 

OxygenOS 11 update for OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T series will be released soon

Moreover, OnePlus has also revealed that the OxygenOS 11 update for OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T series will be released soon. The company confirmed that it has run into a data decryption issue when porting Android 11 to OnePlus 7 and 7T series which is the reason for the delay. However, the company is working with Qualcomm and is already running a closed beta test after which the open beta build will be released to the public for final tests.

Apart from this, the company also teased that it is “working really hard” to offer the latest Android 11 based OxygenOS 11 for eligible devices including the OnePlus 6 and later phones. OnePlus will be revealing more details about the update later.

The phones that are set to receive an update to OxygenOS 11 include OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 7 series, OnePlus 7T series and OnePlus Nord. The OxygenOS 11 update brings system-wide visual refresh, always-on display, Zen Mode 2.0 and more. You can read more about OxygenOS 11 here. 

OnePlus has also teased the launch of its first smart wearable that could be called OnePlus Band in India. The company has been planning to get into the wearables segment from a while now and is also working on a smartwatch for launch in early 2021. Some rumours indicate that the OnePlus Watch is likely to make an appearance with the OnePlus 9 series which is rumoured to launch by mid-March.

Xiaomi stops Mi A3 Android 11 update after users complain of bricked devices

If you didn’t update your Xiaomi Mi A3 to Android 11 when the update rolled out, then you are one of the fortunate ones. The Android 11 update for the Mi A3 has bricked quite a few devices after the update and users have taken to Twitter and Reddit to voice their complaints. 

Xiaomi is aware of the issue and has stopped the rollout. In a statement issued to Digit, Xiaomi has said, “It has come to our notice that few users of Mi A3 are facing issues with the recent OTA update of Android 11. While the rollout has been stopped already at our end, our teams are working towards resolving the issue at the earliest. Customer experience is our topmost priority, and we regret the inconvenience caused. We will keep all users updated on the next steps.”

The Mi A3 is an Android One device, which means it runs on the vanilla version of Android, more commonly known as stock Android. An Android One smartphone brings with it the promise of two Android version updates in its lifetime. The Mi A3 shipped with Android 9 out of the box and even during the Android 10 update, the smartphone faced issues. WhatsApp witnesses 14 billion calls globally on New Years Eve 2020

WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram witnessed a record number of calls and live broadcasts on New Year’s Eve 2020 as people remained at home due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak of the disease and its subsequent spread to nearly all continents forced everyone across the world to adapt their lifestyle. At the time, video calling emerged as a new way for people to stay connected along with audio calls done through apps like WhatsApp and more.

As per some new statistics shared by Facebook, WhatsApp saw the most number of video and voice calls on New Year’s Eve. The last day of 2020 registered over 1.4 billion audio and video calls made on WhatsApp. The popular instant messaging app boasts of over 2 billion active users across the world and people using WhatsApp calling increased to more than 50% than the last New Year’s Eve. 

Moreover, Instagram Live and Facebook Live witnessed more than 55 million live broadcasts across the world globally on New Year’s Eve. Across its products, Facebook saw an uptick in calling features as opposed to last year. “Behind the scenes, Facebook Engineering came together to drive unprecedented efficiency improvements and make our infrastructure more resilient. This work includes load testing, disaster recovery testing and shuffling capacity. This year, New Year’s Eve looked a lot different, and we had engineering teams across Facebook’s apps, ready to support any issue, so the world could ring in 2021,” said Caitlin Banford, technical program manager at Facebook.

It’s clear as more and more people remain huddled up in their homes on New Year's Eve 2020, video calls rose to the occasion for them to connect with their loved ones to celebrate the new year. Facebook backed WhatsApp and Instagram saw a surge in users making voice and video calls along with a record number of Instagram live broadcasts.

WhatsApp recently went live with its payments service in India in partnership with major banks across the country. WhatsApp's users can now transfer money to other users via UPI. Four new images from new Uncharted film teases the movies plot

While video game movies have had a hard time of it in the box office, Sonic the Hedgehog came along and showed everyone that it was possible to make a good film based on a video game. With that in mind, we really hope that the latest Uncharted film does justice to the amazing series of games that came before it. We’ve already reported that Tom Holland will be playing a young Nathan Drake while Mark Wahlberg will be playing his elder brother, Sully, but now, it looks like we’ve got a new set of images from the film.

Posted by the official Uncharted movie Twitter account, the images show off a map, a crucifix and two other cryptic images. Could these artefacts have anything to do with the plot? Who knows. We’ll just have to wait for the to be released to find out. The film is set to premier on July 16, 2021, but with the way things are going, we may just see the film being released online.

Sony has a few other video game projects lined up with the biggest being the HBO Last of Us TV show. In fact according to Sony Studios CEO Tony Vinciquerra, Sony Pictures plans to turn multiple PlayStation franchises into seven TV shows and three movies. The studio is looking at adapting titles exclusive to the PlayStation into movies and TV shows. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a God of War live action film but for now we’re got an Uncharted movie to look forward to.

AmazonBasics Fire TV Edition 4K HDR TV launched in India, starting at Rs 29,999

Amazon has launched its own TV under the AmazonBasics brand. The TV is called the AmazonBasics Fire TV Edition 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV. As the name suggests, the TV runs on the Fire TV UI we first saw on the Onida TV (review) and recently on the Akai TV. The TV is currently available in 50 and 55-inch screen sizes, but it is expected to be available in 43 and 32-inch screen sizes as well. The 50 and 55-inch variant are 4K TVs with support for HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. The 32-inch TV expected to launch later will be an HD ready TV with SDR support. There will be two TVs in the 43-inch screen size. One 4K with support for HDR and one Full HD variant. 

AmazonBasics Fire TV Edition TV specifications and features

As mentioned above, the TV is currently available in 50 and 55-inch screen sizes and the apart from the screen sizes, the specifications of the two TVs are largely the same. When it comes to connectivity options, both screen sizes bring with them 3 HDMI 2.0 ports and 2 USB ports one of which is USB 3.0. The TV also has 20W of sound output and support for Dolby Atmos. Coming to the display, the TV has a 4K panel with support for HDR 10, HDR 10+, HLG and Dolby Vision. 

When it comes to the UI, the TV has the same UI found on the Fire TV Stick which will be familiar to those that have used a Fire TV Stick. The TV comes with Alexa built-in giving you voice controls on the TV along with the ability to control your Alexa enabled home appliances. 

Moving over to the remote control, it looks like the Fire TV stick remote control but comes with some added buttons. You get the standard power, navigation, voice and playback buttons found on the Fire TV Stick remote control. In addition, you also have the volume rocker, and a button to change the channels. You also have a mute and settings button as well. There are dedicated hotkeys for Netflix, Prime Video and Amazon Music. 

AmazonBasics Fire TV Edition TV price and availability

The 50-inch AmazonBasics Fire TV Edition TV is priced at Rs 29,999 while the 55-inch variant is priced at Rs 34,999. Both the models are available on Amazon. While the 43 and 32-inch variants of the TV are teased, there is no pricing or availability for them yet.

OnePlus to make its smart wearables debut by launching a fitness tracker in India soon

OnePlus has officially teased the launch of its first smart wearable in India. The OnePlus Band, as it is rumoured to be called, has been leaked previously and could be priced under Rs 3,000 ($40). OnePlus has already revealed its plans of launching a smartwatch early this year, and it could be unveiled alongside the OnePlus 9 series that’s likely to debut by mid-March.

The official Twitter handle of OnePlus India posted a teaser image, giving us a glimpse at the upcoming fitness tracker from OnePlus. The band in the image seems to have a rectangular screen with “OnePlus” stamped at the bottom. Additionally, a pre-launch microsite has also gone live on the official website for users to register to receive all the latest updates on the upcoming launch.

OnePlus Band could launch in March

As per a previous report, the fitness tracker from OnePlus could be called the OnePlus Band on launch and is likely to go up against the likes of the Mi Band 5 with features such as an AMOLED screen, water-resistance certification and long battery life. Popular tipster Mukul Sharma has previously posted renders of the OnePlus Band that shows us the upcoming fitness tracker in three colours and with different clock styles, hinting at the presence of always-on display option.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has previously gone on record to reveal that the company is planning to launch the much-awaited OnePlus Watch in early 2021. OnePlus was developing a smartwatch back in 2015 but shelved the project to focus on its smartphones. However, the company is now working with Google to improve the smart wearable ecosystem and how users interact with different smart devices.

“What we're trying to do is work with Google to try to improve the connectivity between the Wear OS ecosystem, Android TV, and Android smartphones to create this ability for better device interoperability across the ecosystems,” CEO Lau told InputMag in an interview. 

The OnePlus Watch was teased during the launch of OnePlus 8T, and it is likely to feature a round dial running WearOS out-of-the-box. Moreover, there have been several rumours and leaks now about the upcoming OnePlus 9 series that could launch as early as March 2021. The OnePlus Watch could make an appearance alongside the new smartphones while the fitness band is likely to launch soon.
