Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 entry-level 5G chipset claims to be 100 more powerful than Snapdragon 460

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 480 5G processor which brings next generation of mobile connectivity to affordable price points with entry-level phones. The Snapdragon 480 follows the Snapdragon 460 chip that was launched back in January 2020 and is the first 4-series SoC to offer 5G support.

"Qualcomm Technologies continues to accelerate 5G commercialization globally to make 5G smartphones more accessible, especially as people worldwide continue to connect remotely. The Snapdragon 480 5G Mobile Platform will exceed OEM’s and consumer’s expectations in delivering high-and mid-tier features at an affordable price,” said Kedar Kondap, Vice President, Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor is manufactured on an 8nm process and features the integrated Snapdragon X51 5G Modem-RF system that brings support for mmWave and Sub-6GHz 5G with Standalone (SA) and Non-standalone (NSA) modes. It also enables multi-gigabit 5G connectivity for fast download and upload speeds. The chipset offers support for dual Wi-Fi antennas with Wi-Fi 6 features, dual-frequency GPS and NavIC for positioning systems.

Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon 480 can deliver up to 100% performance improvements when it comes to peak CPU and GPU performance. The SoC features Kryo 460 CPU running at up to 2.0GHz, Adreno 610 GPU and Hexagon 686 processor that enable up to 100% performance gains in CPU and GPU performance and up to 70% AI performance improvement in comparison to Snapdragon 460 processor.

The Snapdragon 480 is also the first processor that brings in support for Quick Charge 4+ technology. It is also equipped with Spectra 345 ISP that supports receiving input from three camera units simultaneously. The Snapdragon 480 supports triple 13MP cameras in ultra-wide, wide and telephoto arrangement and can also record 720p videos simultaneously.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor also supports Full HD+ displays with 120Hz high-refresh-rate for a smooth and lag-free experience. It also supports aptX audio, optimized gaming experience, seamless streaming and more.

Several OEMs have ushered in support for the new Snapdragon 480 processor including OnePlus, Oppo, Nokia, to name a few. OnePlus is planning to launch a phone based on the Snapdragon 480 processor and it could likely be the successor to the OnePlus Nord N100.

“We can’t wait to deliver advanced 5G capabilities to the mass market through an upcoming device based on the new Snapdragon 480 5G Mobile Platform,” said Kinder Liu, Chief Operating Officer at OnePlus.

Garena adds a new pet called Beaston pet to Free Fire

Garena Free Fire has introduced a new pet to the game. Called Beaston, the new pet seems to be a cybernetic baboon, with a physique of a gorilla. As with almost every other pet in Free Fire, Beaston grants a boost to certain abilities, thereby giving the player an edge on the battlefield. However, it should be noted that Beaston is currently not yet available to purchase for players in India, but should be available sooner rather than later.

Skill

Beaston’s skill is called Helping Hand, and it increases the throwing distance of Grenades, Gloo Walls, Flashbangs, and Smoke Grenades. The percentage increase that players can expect will change depending on the level that Beaston is at.

Actions

Beaston has three available actions that can be performed. The first is a ‘Celebration’ that occurs when the player kills an enemy or takes a medkit. The second is a ‘Play’ action that can be manually triggered via the command wheel, while the third is called ‘Show’ which is also triggered via the command wheel. These are unlocked when Beaston reaches level two, three and four, respectively.

Skins

Garena Free Fire Beston pet

Beaston is available with one skin that is called the Great White Beaston. As the name would suggest, this skin changes Beaston’s fur to white, with gold and black additions. This is unlocked when Beaston reaches level six.

The skill granted by Beaston makes it a handy companion for those players who like to bombard their enemies with grenades to soften them up or flush them from their hiding spots. Beaston would also make for a good companion for players who like to use Alvaro as their primary characters. That’s because Alvaro’s passive ability, Art of Demolition, is increased explosive damage and damage range.

Xbox Series XS shortage leads Microsoft to ask AMD for help

As the next generation of console make their way to India, it looks like Microsoft may have a few issues to iron out first. In a report on Gizmodo, it was stated that the Xbox Series X and Series S were both facing serious shortages. The console has been out for more than a month now, and it seems that demand is far outstripping the supply of these consoles. With that in mind, Microsoft have reached out to chip manufactured AMD to help fast-track processes at its end.

Xbox Series X Shortages

This should not come as a bug surprise to gamers as in November, Xbox’s chief financial officer Tim Stuart had stated that shortages of the Xbox Series X and Series S could last till April 2021! And Microsoft is not alone in this either as Sony have also been facing shortages of the PS5 and are struggling to get the console out to gamers. It also doesn’t help when bots and scalpers scoop up consoles.

AMD are also in a bit of a bind as the company has had a few issues when it comes to the Ryzen 5000 processors as well. The company had a difficult time meeting the demand for those chips, and it looks like it may have some logistical issues to iron out. There also seems to be a shortage of GDDR6 RAM as well which led to the slowing down of production on GPUs and on next-gen consoles.

CoWIN vaccine app under development as India prepares for mass COVID-19 vaccination

The CoWIN (COVID Vaccine Intelligence Network) app is reportedly under development as India prepares for mass vaccination drives against Coronavirus. The government is currently testing the CoWIN system internally and many states across the country are working to conduct vaccine trials before a public rollout. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has already hailed the vaccination system stating that the “World’s largest COVID-19 vaccination programme set to begin in India.”

The Indian government is yet to release its official CoWIN app on the Play Store or App Store so beware of downloading any other app from either of the stores. There are high chances that many malware apps could be masquerading as the CoWIN app which is yet to be launched officially.

CoWIN was announced by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad as a platform to effectively rollout and scale-up COVID-19 vaccine distribution system all over India. The Indian government has announced a grand challenge for startups to strengthen CoWIN platform. “Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has identified seven focus areas of technology development to holistically address the likely limitations associated with complete and effective vaccine distribution system (VDS) and its seamless administration across India,” reads the press release.

— Dr Harsh Vardhan (@drharshvardhan) January 3, 2021

The grand challenge is open for participants till January 15 after which the app is expected to release officially. The top five participants will be provided with the necessary APIs to test their solutions and integration with CoWIN system along with a chance to win Rs 2 lakhs for each shortlisted candidate. Moreover, the top two candidates will be rewarded Rs 40 lakhs and Rs 20 lakhs after successful integration of their respective solutions to the CoWIN system.

The official website of CoWIN that’s registered on the Indian government domain has also gone live. However, as mentioned it is being tested internally and the public will be able to register it once it is formally announced in India. The app is expected to be a one-stop-shop for everything related to Coronavirus vaccine and users will be able to register on the app using government verified identity cards like Aadhar card.

As of writing this, the government is yet to release the CoWIN app officially, so be sure not to download any app posing as the official CoWIN app for the COVID-19 vaccination system in India. There are many such apps already available on the Play Store but none of those apps is the official CoWIN app and is likely made to steal your private information.
