Intel announces a biometric authentication system for ATMs and more called RealSenseID

It looks like ATMs are about to get a bit of an upgrade as Intel has announced its RealSenseID camera system for the machines. It not only functions as a camera but also comes with biometric features that are ideal for ATMs and even smart locks. The new system melds a specialized neural network with an active depth sensor for accurate results. With this initiative, Intel looks to bring high-end facial recognition and authentication to everyday devices like ATMs and such.

Intel's RealSenseID could be used on ATMs

RealSenseID will be available for $99 to start with and should hit the market sometime later in 2021. The system works similarly to FaceID found on Apple devices in that it uses a combination of two cameras and sensors to capture depth and using specialized neural networks, actively distinguishes different faces. With this technology, we could see more smartphone-like biometric features on devices such as ATMs and even on future vending machines and the like. These could even be used as electronic locks for homes, offices etc.

In a statement regarding false faces and even photographic recognition, Intel has said that, “The solution is also only activated through user awareness and will not authenticate unless prompted by a pre-registered user. As with all Intel technology, we are working to ensure the ethical application of RealSense and the protection of human rights.”. What that entails remains to be seen.

Black Sharks next phone to be invincible, claims CEO

Black Shark has been a pioneer in releasing gaming phones and competes with the likes of the RoG Phone and OnePlus. The company, just like OnePlus and Apple, releases only one or two phones in a year and are making their presence known worldwide in the smartphone gaming industry.

Last year, the company released two phones, the Black Shark 3 and Black Shark 3 Pro, which were powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset. As per reports, there is a possibility that the company might release the Black Shark 4 or Black Shark 5, by March this year.

Black Shark phone

Black Shark CEO Luo Yuzhou took it to Weibo, hinting at the arrival of the new Black Shark phone. The CEO wrote “Love it, I  think you are truly invincible”  on the Weibo post. The phone is speculated to be powered by a Snapdragon 888 SoC. Before the official announcement of the chip, the company had claimed that Black Shark will be one of the first OEMs to launch the phone with the new Snapdragon flagship chipset.

As the company had released two phones last year, this year we can expect a Pro variant along with the standard one. Most Chinese manufacturers are known to skip the number four in their product line-up and Black Shark being one of them, might skip the name Black Shark 4 and name the next variant Black Shark 5.

No further information is available regarding the specifications and release date of the phone from the company. A recent leak from the company had revealed that the next phone is codenamed “Emperor” and will see a design refresh along with faster-charging technology.

Facebook has now removed the Like button from all public pages

With the new year comes new changes and Facebook looks to be one of the first major companies to really shake things up in 2021. The company has removed the ‘Like’ button from public pages. This essentially means that pages used by celebrities, artists, musicians, brands etc will have the ‘Like’ button removed. In a blog post, Facebook stated that these pages will only display info such as number of followers and a dedicated News Feed.

Facebook removes Like button

This is what Facebook had to say regarding the matter, “We are removing Likes and focusing on Followers to simplify the way people connect with their favorite Pages. Unlike Likes, Followers of a Page represent the people who can receive updates from Pages, which helps give public figures a stronger indication of their fan base.”. The company goes on to say, “We want Facebook to be a safe place to connect with fans, so we’ve improved our ability to detect activity that isn’t allowed on our platform including hate speech, violent, sexual or spammy content and impersonation.”.

Other changes include a redesigned layout on public pages, Updated task-based admin controls, Easy navigation between personal profile and Pages, Safety and integrity features to detect spammy content and impersonator accounts and more. Facebook has already gone through a major overhaul in the past few months, and it looks like there is no stopping the social media giant. Facebook's ambition of becoming a mainstream news medium is evident, and it's now reportedly working on a new tool that summarises news pieces for easy and faster consumption. You can read more about that here.
