Acer Chromebook Spin 514 with AMD Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics announced ahead of CES 2021

Acer has announced its new Chromebook Spin 514 with AMD Ryzen 3000 C-series processors and Radeon graphics. The Spin 514 is made for watching videos, working from anywhere and also has an Enterprise version available from business customers. Acer has also unveiled three new gaming monitors ahead of CES 2021 and one of the monitors, the Nitro XV282K supports HDMI 2.1 for running games in UHD at 120FPS. 

Acer Chromebook Spin 514 has a thin and light profile with a chassis made of anodized aluminium and is U.S. MIL-STD 810H certified for its durability. The Spin 514 measures 17.35 millimetres in thickness and weighs 1.55 kilograms. Acer claims that the Spin 514 can survive drops from up to 48 inches height and withstand up to 60 kilograms of pressure.

The Chromebook Spin 514 features a 14-inch Full HD IPS display that supports touch input and is protected in a layer of Gorilla Glass. The Chromebook has minimal side bezels measuring 6.1 millimetres that give it a 78% screen-to-body ratio. Additionally, the Spin 514 has been built with a convertible form-factor as it can rotate 360-degrees for users to just use the touchscreen.

As for the I/O ports, the Chromebook Spin 514 is equipped with two USB Type-C ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and microSD card slot. Some models of the Spin 514 will also feature HDMI port based on region.

The Spin 514 will be available in different configurations based on AMD Ryzen 7 3700C and Ryzen 5 3500C quad-core processors with integrated Radeon Vega graphics. This is paired with up to 16GB RAM and 256GB storage options to choose from. 

Acer is also offering the Chromebook Enterprise Spin 514 for businesses with improved security, enterprise capabilities and other business features of Chrome OS. The Enterprise Spin 514 can be configured with up to 16GB DDR4 RAM and 256GB SSD storage. As the Spin 514 is powered by Chrome OS, it can run apps from Play Store along with other web-based apps.

The Chromebook Spin 514 will be available in three colours: Pure Silver, Steel Gray and Mist Green. It is priced starting at USD 479 for the US and will be available from February onwards. The Enterprise Edition of the Spin 514 is priced starting at USD 749 and will be available from March.

Dell launches new monitors at CES 2021 with dedicated Microsoft Teams Button

Dell has announced three new monitors which will launch next month. The monitors come with a dedicated Microsoft Teams button. Microsoft has started certifying hardware such as displays, headsets, webcams since last year and according to Dell, these monitors are the world’s first certified video conferencing monitors certified by Microsoft. 

The dedicated Teams button will let the user quickly launch the Teams app to make and receive video calls. The monitors also offer support for hands-free control via Cortana using the built-in microphone. This is the first time a monitor is seeing a dedicated button for Microsoft Teams.

Many of the new and old devices have got deeper integration with Microsoft Teams since the pandemic had started and soared the usage of the app.

While the highlight of the monitor is the Teams button, they also have a few features that help in accompanying the users in the era of work from home. The monitors include a 5-megapixel pop-up camera, that comes with support for Windows Hello facial recognition. The monitors also include a noise-cancelling microphone and dual 5-Watt speakers. There is a dedicated mode in the display to reduce blue light emissions.

Dell is launching three new monitors with the dedicated Teams button and all the monitors include the same set of features. The three different form factors of the monitors are a 24-inch (FHD) version for $519.99 (Roughly Rs. 38,184), a 27-inch (QHD) model for $719.99 (Roughly Rs. 52,870), and a curved 34-inch (WQHD) variant for $1,149.99 (Roughly Rs. 84,445). The monitors are supposed to launch by February 16, 2021.

Acer announces two Predator gaming monitors alongside new Nitro 4K gaming monitor with HDMI 21 at CES 2021

Acer has announced three new gaming monitors, one of which comes with support for HDMI 2.1 that lets users run games in 4K UHD at 120FPS. With HDMI2.1, PS5 (review) and Xbox Series X gamers will be able to take advantage of HDMI 2.1 features on this monitor. The Taiwanese company has unveiled the Nitro XV282K KV along with Predator XB273U NX and Predator XB323QK NV. All three monitors support high refresh rates and are certified by TÜV Rheinland for emitting less blue-light than the industry standard.

Acer Nitro XV282K features a 28-inch 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) resolution IPS display along with supporting 144Hz high refresh rate. The monitor offers 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 93% DCI-P3 colour gamut while the AMD FreeSync Premium technology supports it by offering 1ms response time for fast rendering. 

The new Acer Nitro gaming monitor is equipped with HDMI 2.1 which means that users can play games in 4K UHD at 120FPS with variable refresh rate, making it a great choice for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S series owners looking for a new gaming monitor. However, potential buyers will have to wait until May which is when the new Acer monitors are expected to go on sale. The Nitro XV282K KV is priced starting at USD 899 in the US and RMB 6,999 in China where it will be available from February.

The monitor supports 240Hz refresh rate that can go up to 275Hz when overclocked along with a response time of 0.5ms. It is also HDR400 certified covering 95% of DCI-P3 colour gamut range along with NVIDIA Reflex Latency Analyzer and G-Sync support. Acer has priced the Predator XB273U NX gaming monitor at USD 1,099 in the US and RMB 7,999 in China.

Apart from this, there’s the Predator XB323QK 31-inch 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) gaming monitor which supports 144Hz refresh rate along with 90% DCI-P3 colour gamut range. It uses the company’s proprietary Agile Splendor IPS screen and is VESA Display HDR 400 certified as well. The Predator XB323QK is priced at USD 1,199 in the US and RMB 8,999 in China. Acer will reveal more details about the specifications and features of the new monitors closer to the date of availability.

MediaTek selected for Wi-Fi 6E Certification Program

MediaTek has announced that it has been selected for Wi-Fi Alliance’s Wi-Fi 6E Certification Program and will serve as a testbed for Wi-Fi 6E. The company notes that it has an access point wireless solution (MT7915-AP-AX) and a client-side wireless solution (MT7915-STA-AX) on the testbed. The company notes that these two testbed devices support unlicensed operation in the 6GHz band and include many advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like multiple resource unit (RU) sizes for optimal simultaneous OFDMA operation of multiple clients, and more.

MediaTek notes that its Wi-Fi 6E access point and client products are designed for a variety of market segments. This includes:

MediaTek also noted that Wi-Fi 6 devices with Wi-Fi 6E support offer a number of advantages over previous Wi-Fi generation. This includes lower latency and additional capacity and speed. Further, devices using Wi-Fi 6 connections in 6GHz are designed to make use of wide 160MHz channels and uncongested bandwidth in 6GHz to deliver multigigabit, low latency Wi-Fi for better connectivity. This should enable better support for applications such as unified communications, AR/VR and more.

LG Unveils WebOS 6 Smart TV platform and new Magic remote control at CES 2021

At CES 2021, LG has announced the new webOS 6.0 UI for its 2021 OLED, QNED Mini LED, NanoCell and UHD smart TVs. It isn’t clear whether the new UI is limited to the new TVs only or whether it will come to existing 2020 or even 2019 flagships. LG has also unveiled a new Magic Remote. The new remote control not only sees a redesign but also has some functional changes as well. 

New LG webOS 6.0 UI

Those familiar with LG’s webOS will feel right at home with the new UI. It has the same tile-like design representing the apps at the bottom of the screen but they have a squarer design this time around. Previously, the rest of the display wasn't really utilized with the webOS UI but it looks like, with webOS 6, users can expect to see widgets and recommendations populating the screen. 

According to LG, “The new home screen provides faster access to the most frequently used apps and streamlines content discovery with the ability to receive recommendations based on the user's preferences and viewing history. To show recommended content and related information at one glance, the new home is displayed full-screen as a central hub for settings and the greater webOS ecosystem”.

LG goes on to say, “Magic Explorer, an enhanced version of LG's Magic Link, can deliver informative content related to what's showing on screen so viewers can learn more about the actors, locations and other items of interest in the movies and shows they're watching. The content dependent feature can also deliver an easy and friendly shopping experience for products appearing across select broadcast channels and LG TV services including Live TV, Gallery, Settings and TV Guide by changing the colour of the cursor whenever Magic Explorer has information to share".

"The latest version of our user-friendly open TV platform webOS 6.0 represents the most significant update since we first introduced webOS in 2014," said Park Hyoung-sei, President of LG Home Entertainment Company. "With the new edition of webOS, LG is demonstrating its commitment of offering services, products and technologies that respond to the needs and wants of our valued customers."

Next Picks feature analyzes viewers' preferences to discover content suited to their tastes. This is achieved by using the viewers watch history data to recommend live programs from broadcast or set-top box offerings as well as VOD title or app that viewers will find matches the type of content they watch. 

LG new Magic Remote

LG’s Magic remote has remained largely unchanged for the past few years. In 2021, we will not only get a redesign for the Magic Remote but also some new features as well. The new design of the remote looks to retain the design language of the current LG magic remote while implementing a slightly more squarish design. As per the image, it looks like the remote control will have a matte finish to it. Previously the LG remote control only had one voice button and long-pressing the Prime Video hotkey would bring up Alexa. The new remote control not only has the traditional voice button but also dedicated buttons for the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The remote control also has dedicated hotkeys for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+. 

The Magic Remote offers fast connections between the TV and other devices. Using 'Magic Tap', which is a one-touch Near Field Communication (NFC) function on the Magic Remote, users can simply touch a compatible NFC-enabled smartphone to the remote and share content from their phones to the LG TVs or vice versa. LG says that users can also view content stored in these mobile phones on their LG TVs while continuing to use their smartphone apps and features.

While Sony is leaning towards Google’s new Google TV UI on their 2021 TV lineup, LG is strengthening its own UI while implementing new features. It will be interesting to see how the new UI’s faceoff against each other when we have the new TVs in for review.
