Bethesda teases a new Indiana Jones game

Bethesda has announced that it is working on a new game based on the Indiana Jones franchise. The publisher notes that its studio, Machine Games will work in tandem with LucasFilm Games and the project’s executive producer will be Todd Howard. Machine Games is the studio that was behind the recent Wolfenstein games which were very well-received. However, details of the upcoming Indiana Jones are not yet known. All we know is that players will have to wait as “it'll be some time” before Bethesda has more to reveal.

A new Indiana Jones game with an original story is in development from our studio, @MachineGames, and will be executive produced by Todd Howard, in collaboration with @LucasfilmGames. It'll be some time before we have more to reveal, but we’re very excited to share today’s news!

— Bethesda (@bethesda) January 12, 2021

The announcement also included a short teaser for the game which showed nothing in terms of gameplay. All we see in the trailer is Indy’s iconic whip and hat, which was pretty much all players needed to get onboard the hype-wagon.

— Bethesda (@bethesda) January 12, 2021

Of course, while the prominence of Indiana Jones may not be as big as it once was, the character is considered a cultural icon. In fact, the character is known for being one of Harrison Ford’s greatest characters and is right alongside his portrayals of Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise and Rick Deckard in the Blade Runner franchise. It is not yet known if Ford will be a part of the game and will lend his voice or likeness. But considering the fact that it is all set to reprise the role for a fifth time in an upcoming movie. So it is quite possible. However, we still do not know if the game will be a tie-in with the movie, or a stand-alone story.

One of the more interesting bits about the announcement is that Bethesda is now owned by Microsoft. So it is quite possible that the game might just be an exclusive for the Xbox Series X/S and PC. There is also the possibility that the game might just end up being a timed exclusive, and might release on the Sony PlayStation 5 at a later date.

Fun fact as people discuss whether or not this will be exclusive to Xbox in some way (timed or otherwise): the last *major* Indiana Jones game (meaning AAA, big-budget), was Indiana Jones & The Emperor's Tomb in 2003 by The Collective – and it was a timed Xbox exclusive.

— Ryan McCaffrey (@DMC_Ryan) January 12, 2021

The Indiana Jones game franchise might also give some tight competition to Sony’s massively popular Uncharted franchise, Especially considering the fact that the Uncharted series is pretty much done after the events of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. After all, who better to challenge Nathan Drake’s dominance as a charismatic swash-bucking, treasure hunting adventurer than the original charismatic swash-bucking, treasure hunting adventurer?

Qualcomm announces second-gen fingerprint reader technology called the 3D Sonic Gen2

Qualcomm just announced its second generation in-display fingerprint sensor that improves on the previous generation sensor in every way. The new sensor offers a larger area and a faster unlock mechanism.

The newer generation sensor includes a larger surface area measuring at 8mm x 8mm, compared to the 4mm x 9mm in the previous generation. Meaning this would make it easier for the sensor to recognize the finger as the surface area of the sensor is improved. According to Qualcomm, the newer sensor has  77 percent more surface area than the previous generation. Qualcomm promises that scanning a fingerprint to unlock a phone will go 50 percent faster with the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2.

Qualcomm Second Gen fingerprint reader sensor

The first generation sensor made its debut in 2018 with the Samsung Galaxy S10 lineup, and this was the only ultrasonic sensor while the competitors were using an in-display fingerprint scanner which is less reliable and less secure than the ultrasonic sensor.

The first generation sensor ran into problems just after the release and had a security flaw that allowed to unlock the phone with almost any fingerprint when used with some screen protectors. Then, in 2019, Qualcomm released a 3D Sonic Max sensor which was just a larger version of the first-gen sensor.

According to Qualcomm the first phones to use the new sensor should be available in early 2021, although it did not name any partner or specific date, it is worth noting that Samsung is going to announce the Galaxy S21 on 14 January, and being the biggest consumer for the ultrasonic sensor, the S21 is expected to come with the new 3D Sonic Gen2 sensor.

OLED TVs are considered the pinnacle of TV viewing especially when you consider the contrast and colours, they can produce. One of the downsides to OLED TVs is that they don't get extremely bright. It looks like that is about to change in 2021 as LG has announced its Evo panel which will debut in 2021’s LG G1 OLED TV. The USP of Evo is that it addresses the brightness issue with OLED TVs and aims to deliver a brighter image to viewers.

LG 2021 OLED TVs

Every year, LG has a range of OLED offerings from the “affordable” OLED TVs to the premium OLED TVs. All the TVs come with support for HDMI 2.1, a feature LG has been helming since 2019. With HDMI 2.1, gamers can expect to take advantage of features like 4K at 120Hz, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). The TVs will also support AMD Free Sync and NVIDIA G-SYNC.

The 2021 OLED TVs from LG with come with a new magic remote with NFC capabilities and a new UI that will take advantage of the entire display. You can check out the new UI and remote control here.

The TVs will also come with Google Stadia support built-in, and it will be interesting to see if the service will finally make its debut in India or not. LG’s new 2021 OLED TVs will be powered by the company’s new Alpha 9 gen 4 chip, and it will be interesting to see how this chip improves the picture performance of the TV.

The 2021 LG TVs also bring with them a Game Optimizer feature. This will automatically detect the genre of game you are playing and adjust the settings accordingly. So, in an FPS game, you will be able to notice if someone is camping in the shadows as shadow details will be enhanced for this mode.

LG Z1 OLED TV

At the top of the food chain, we have the LG Z1 which is an 8K OLED TV. It will be available in 77 and 88-inch screen sizes. Just like its predecessor, the ZX, the Z1 will come with its own unique rectangular base stand which will house the speakers and connectivity options.

LG G1 OLED TV

The G1, which is LG’s gallery series has been known to bring with it stylish design making the TV sit flush with the wall. You can check out our review of the 2020 GX OLED TV and see the unique design the TV offers. The G1 is a 4K OLED TV powered by the Alpha9 Gen 4 chip. It will be available in 77, 65, 55-inch screen sizes. The G1 will be the only lineup in LG’s OLED family to offer the Evo panel. It will be interesting to see how this TV performs in comparison to LG’s other OLED offerings.  The G1 will also support LG’s unique Gallery stand for those that want to put the TV on a stand and don't want to wall-mount it.

LG C1 OLED TV

Next up, we have the C1 which should be the most popular model for LG. It is a 4K OLED TV and will be available in 83, 77, 65, 55, 48-inch screen sizes. In 2020 the 48-inch CX was touted as the ideal gaming monitor. But sadly, the 48-inch OLED wasn’t launched in India. The C1 also runs on the Alpha 9 Gen 4 chip.

LG A1 OLED TV

Below the C series, OLED TVs has always been the entry-level B series OLED TV from LG. It looks like this time LG is replacing that with the A1 series for 2021. The A1 will be available in 77, 65, 55, 48-inch screen sizes. The A1 will be powered by the older, Alpha 7 Gen 4 chipset.

Alienware m15, m17 refreshed with Nvidia Geforce 30-series GPUs alongside Aurora R10 with AMD Ryzen CPUs

Dell treats the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas as its biggest platform to announce everything new that the company will do in the year. Each year, CES sees Dell announce a ton of new laptops, desktop and monitors, practically across every series in its portfolio, whether its consumer or enterprise. This year, however, the consumer end is seeing a fraction of the announcements, with new products being announced only in the Alienware portfolio.

Alienware m15 R4 and Alienware m17 R4

The mainstream Alienware gaming laptops, the m15 and m17 are now in their fourth revision, donning the R4 moniker. The laptops will be powered by either the Intel Core i7-10870H or the Intel Core i9-10980HK. The upgrade here is to the GPU and the display, with both laptops now coming with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 30-series cards on-board. The display on the two machines have also been upgraded. The Alienware m15 R4 now offers a choice between an FHD IPS panel with 3ms response time and 300Hz refresh rate and a 4K OLED panel with a refresh rate of 60Hz and 1ms response time. Both the displays meet the HDR500 standard. On the larger Alienware m14 R4, there are three options in total. The first is an FHD display with a refresh rate of 144Hz and G-Sync, while the second panel also sports the same resolution, but a much higher refresh rate of 300Hz. This panel is also G-Sync certified and has a response time of 5ms while the 144Hz panel offers a 7ms response time. The third option is a UHD model with 25ms response time and 60Hz refresh rate. While the 4K panel has a peak brightness of 500-nits, the fullHD panels have a peak brightness of just 300-nits. Both the Alienware m15 R4 and Alienware m17 R4 will be configurable with up to 32GB DDR4 memory and 2TB NVMe storage. If users choose to opt for RAID 0, the storage can be expanded up to 4TB.

Alienware Aurora Ryzen Edition R10

The Alienware Aurora gaming desktop is also getting a boost in its specs this CES. Dell has announced the Alienware Aurora Ryzen Edition R10 can now be configured all the way from Ryzen 3000-series all the way up to the latest AMD Ryzen 9 5950X if needed. Interestingly, Alienware is only offering a B550-chipset based motherboard and not an X-570 one. With respect to GPU options, Alienware is offering both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, with the RX 6800XT being the only option from the newest batch while the entire 30-series is up for grabs from Team Green. For those looking to completely spec-out the build, you can also add up to 128GB DDR4 memory to the system in dual channel configuration while storage options go all the way up to 2TB NVMe or 2TB NVMe+2TB HDD in a dual-storage configuration.

Pricing and Availability

The Alienware m15 R4 and Alienware m17 R4 will both start at $2149.99 and will go on sale January 26 2021. The Alienware Aurora Ryzen Edition R10 will start at $1079.99 and is going to be available today itself. However, these machines have not yet received any India pricing or availability.

LG Rollable is here to take on foldable phones, launching later this year

The LG Rollable phone has been showcased during the company’s press conference in the ongoing CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2021. The fact that LG has been working on a rollable phone is pretty much known so much so that Oppo jumped on the bandwagon by unveiling its Oppo X 2021 rollable smartphone back in November 2020. However, LG now wants to get the ball rolling and has teased its first rollable phone putting all rumours to rest.

The digital LG Press conference began with a person holding the LG Rollable in their hands where Jin-hong Kim (JK), SVP, Head of Global Marketing Center at LG kicked off the presentation as the phone expands vertically. It looks rather ingenious and sets a perfect use case for this new form factor.

Then at the end of the conference, JK signs-off as a person is shown to watch the conference on the rollable phone that starts to reduce in size. The company also confirms the name LG Rollable that’s been rumoured to be under development under the Explorer’s Project.

Shortly after the LG Rollable teaser went viral, a spokesperson for LG confirmed to Nikkei Asia that the LG Rollable phone will be launched this year. "Our management wanted to show that it is a real product, as there were many rumours around the rollable phone. As it is released at CES 2021, I can tell that it will be launched this year,” Ken Hong, a spokesperson for LG told Nikkei Asia.

Moreover, the report also cites an industry source that claims that LG is working with BOE for the rollable screens that go into making the LG Rollable phone. BOE is one of the major manufacturers of displays that are used by TVs and smartphones including foldable screens. The company has worked with Huawei before for the company’s Mate X foldable phone and has provided displays for LG smartphones as well.

According to previous reports, the LG Rollable could have a 7.4-inch rollable display with 20:9 aspect ratio similar to the Oppo X 2021 concept smartphone. The device is also said to have a video mode with 16:9 aspect ratio along with a productivity mode that offers 3:2 aspect ratio. The exact display specs remain unknown but if we had to guess, the LG Rollable phone could use an OLED display with a variable size that can go between 6.7-inches to 7.4-inches.

The phone is expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage options. It is rumoured to be equipped with a 4,200mAh battery likely with support for fast charging.

If everything goes well for LG, we may soon see its Rollable phone before Oppo X 2021 makes it commercial debut. However, at this point, there is no exact date for the commercial launch of either of the rollable phones. You can read more about the Oppo X 2021 concept phone here.
