Xiaomi could launch Redmi Note 10 series in February in India, Mi 11 variants tipped

Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 series could launch as soon as February in India, according to the latest leak. The new leak also reveals the Mi 11 variants that will launch in India soon. The Mi 11 lineup has already been teased to launch in India, but the latest leak also indicates that the Redmi Note 10 series could arrive in India earlier than expected. The Mi 11 was launched in December 2020 as the first phone powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor and the Mi 11 Pro with Mi 11 Lite is expected to be announced soon.

According to a report by 91Mobiles that cites popular tipster Ishan Agarwal, the Redmi Note 10 series will launch in February in India at aggressive prices. The Redmi Note 10 Pro has previously surfaced on different certification websites across the world and will succeed the Redmi Note 9 series.

As per previous reports, the Redmi Note 10 Pro is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 732G processor with quad cameras on the back headlined by the 64MP primary camera. This is followed by an ultra-wide-angle camera, macro camera and a depth sensor. The phone is expected to be fitted with a 5,050mAh battery with fast charging support.

The latest leak indicates that the Redmi Note 10 could launch in Gray, White and Green colours options to choose from.

Xiaomi India’s Marketing Lead, Sumit Sonal recently confirmed that the company is indeed planning to bring the Mi 11 to India but were contemplating the SKUs. The new leak seemingly confirms that the company is bringing the Mi 11 and the yet-unannounced Mi 11 Lite to India soon.

The Mi 11 could arrive with 8GB RAM paired with 128GB/256GB storage options to choose from and in Blue and Grey colours. As for the Mi 11 Lite, it could be launched with 6GB RAM + 64GB/128GB storage and 8GB +128GB storage options to choose from in Blue, Black and Pink colours.

As per a previous leak, Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite is said to feature a Full HD+ flat-screen display, unlike the curved screen we have seen on the Mi 11. There is a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera up front and a squircle camera module on the back with three cameras. The display is also rumoured to support 120Hz high refresh rate. It is rumoured to be powered by the Snapdragon 732G processor paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The rear camera array could include a primary 64MP camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5MP camera. The phone is expected to be fitted with either a side-mounted fingerprint sensor or a rear-mounted reader, but the same is not visible in the leaked renders.

Xiaomi is yet to confirm the exact date of the launch of either the Redmi Note 10 series or the Mi 11 series in India. However, we will be keeping an eye out for any developments in the coming weeks.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G processor launched: How different is it from the Snapdragon 865 Plus

Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G processor has officially launched as an enhanced version of the Snapdragon 865 series processors from 2020. Qualcomm announced its flagship Snapdragon 888 processor in December 2020 which was followed by the launch of the Mi 11 as the first phone to be powered by the said chipset.

Proud to introduce the latest member of the #Snapdragon family: the Snapdragon 870 #5G Mobile Platform. With boosted CPU performance, you’ll get revved-up #AI and gaming experiences. Learn more: https://t.co/xNHtVj97Ho pic.twitter.com/SalIg2UOLj

— Qualcomm (@Qualcomm) January 19, 2021

Qualcomm has now introduced a slightly upgraded version of its last year’s flagship processor in the form of the Snapdragon 870 which will be powering some upcoming affordable high-end smartphones. As noted by Mishaal Rahman of XDA Developers, the Snapdragon 870 processor will help smartphone manufactures launch phones with a new flagship processor as opposed to using year-old Snapdragon 865 or 865 Plus chips.

If you're wondering why this exists and is called the Snapdragon 870 despite basically being the 865++, it's because of marketing. OEMs can now release new phones claiming to have the "new" 870 rather than the "year-old" 865. https://t.co/rBGxmuzPo9

— Mishaal Rahman (@MishaalRahman) January 19, 2021

The Snapdragon 870 5G processor has an octa-core CPU with Adreno 650 GPU and Snapdragon Elite gaming features. This is paired with upto 16GB LPDDR4x or LPDDR5 RAM modules and 5th generation Hexagon 698 AI Engine. The chip supports displays of upto 144Hz refresh rate and has an external Snapdragon X55 5G modem.

The Snapdragon 870 has dual Spectra 480 ISP with support for upto 8K UHD video recording and HDR10+ with Dolby Vision. The chip also supports Quick Charge 4+, Wi-Fi 6 and NavIC GPS connectivity.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 vs Snapdragon 865 Plus: What’s different?

The Snapdragon 870 has the same features as the Snapdragon 865 Plus, save for some tweaks here and there. The major change the Snapdragon 870 brings over the 865 and 865 Plus is a higher clocked prime Kryo 585 core running at 3.2GHz, and that’s about it. The Snapdragon 870 is still a 7nm chipset with an external X55 5G modem and three performance Kryo 585 cores running at 2.4GHz along with four power-efficient Kryo 385 cores clocked at 1.8GHz.

The Snapdragon 870 also brings support for Bluetooth 5.2 while the 865 and 865 Plus support Bluetooth 5.1. The rest of the feature set remains the same as the 865 Plus.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 powered phones incoming

Several smartphone manufacturers have revealed their plans to launch a phone based on the Snapdragon 870 5G processor in the coming months. Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, iQOO and Xiaomi have all confirmed that they are developing smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 870 processor. Additionally, Qualcomm has said that phones with Snapdragon 870 under the hood will be announced in the first quarter of 2021.

“We are glad to announce that soon we will bring the new Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform into our portfolio, unleashing the power of our smartphones to new and unique experiences,” said Sergio Buniac, president, Motorola Mobility.

“The flagship performance and exceptional 5G connectivity provided by the Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform coupled with OnePlus’ unique innovative technologies and optimization, we look forward to delivering lightning-fast 5G speeds and ultra-smooth mobile experiences to more users,” said Kinder Liu, chief operating officer and head of R&D, OnePlus.

“Following our principle of ‘technology for mankind, kindness for the world’ and leveraging the premium performance delivered by the new Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform, OPPO will deliver more human-centred products to global consumers and meet their expectations for cutting-edge technologies,” said Alen Wu, vice president and president of global sales, OPPO.

“Benefitting from the powerful performance of the new Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform, we will continue to build a high-end flagship device and bring more surprises to global consumers regarding 5G, camera, AI, and more,” said Lei Zhang, vice president of Mi Smartphone and general manager of hardware R&D, Xiaomi.

Indian government asks WhatsApp to withdraw new privacy policy: Report

The Indian government has reportedly asked WhatsApp to withdraw the new terms under its updated privacy policy. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has written an email to Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp citing “grave concerns” over the new changes in the privacy policy. WhatsApp introduced some changes to its privacy policy on January 6 with Business features set to go live on February 8. However, the constant uproar by the users led the company to defer its plans by three months.

According to a report by TechCrunch that cites a copy of the email sent by MeitY to WhatsApp, the Indian government has said that the new changes in WhatsApp’s privacy policy have raised “grave concerns regarding the implications for the choice and autonomy of Indian citizens,” which is why the government is now mounting pressure on WhatsApp to withdraw the proposed changes.

The Indian government has also enquired as to why users have not been given the option to opt-out of the proposed privacy policy changes as it is also not applicable to users in the European Union. “Such a differential treatment is prejudicial to the interests of Indian users and is viewed with serious concern by the government. The government of India owes a sovereign responsibility to its citizens to ensure that their interests are not compromised and therefore it calls upon WhatsApp to respond to concerns raised in this letter,” MeitY wrote in the email.

The government has also warned WhatsApp of the proposed changes as it may find it difficult to enforce the said policy if the Personal Data Protection Bill becomes an act. “Since the Parliament is seized of the issue, making such a momentous change for Indian users at this time puts the cart before the horse. Since the Personal Data Protection Bill strongly follows the principle of ‘purpose limitation,’ these changes may lead to significant implementation challenges for WhatsApp should the Bill become an Act,” MeitY added.

WhatsApp introduced new changes to its privacy policy on January 6 where it detailed how it is working with Facebook to bring shopping features to the app soon. Additionally, the company has clarified that it does not have access to user’s chats or calls and neither does Facebook has that kind of access due to the encrypted nature of the user data.

However, the company has also said that communication with a business account is different than messaging your friends or family. If the business is using Facebook’s hosting services to manage their chats and communicate to customers, it may use the information provided by the user for marketing and advertising purposes.

It remains to be seen how WhatsApp responds to the concerns raised by the Indian government which is also one of its largest markets with over 400 million users.

The new privacy policy was set to take effect from February 8, but now it has been deferred to May 15. You can read more about WhatsApp's updated privacy policy here and what it means for users here.

VLC has now been updated to support Apples M1 Macs natively

VLC, the popular open-source media player is available on almost all platforms, and given the recent changes in the Mac lineup with the M1 silicon, the player just got updated with full support for Apple's M1 Macs.

The M1 equipped Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, and the Mac Mini will now be able to squeeze out the maximum performance using the new VLC update. The software will now be able to perform faster and more efficiently on the new platform.

Mac apps do not necessarily require the native ARM code to run the applications on the M1 laptops, since these laptops include Rosetta 2, the software compiler to run x86 code binary on ARM hardware, and as per the reviews till now the transition layer works quite well for the x86 codec.

VLC for MAc

VLC version 3.0.12 comes with a version ready for M1 Macs, along with enhancements such as a fix for audio distortions and adaptive streaming resolution, and security improvements, along with some visual updates to match the BigSur UI.

The new version does not have a universal binary, as spotted by 9to5Mac, which means that ARM code is not included by default, so you would need to first update your VLC to version 3.0.12 and then check for updates again and update it to version 3.0.12.1 which is the ARM optimized version.

Version 3.0.12 brings general fixes and improvements to all the platforms, including better Blu-ray support and fixing some crashes when using Direct3D 11 on Windows. The ARM version should see improvements while playing back 4K or 8K video files on VLC.
