FAU-G crosses 50 lakh downloads mark, becomes top-free game on the Google Play Store

Despite its less than stellar reviews, FAU-G aka Fearless And United Guards, has managed to garner over 50 lakh installs within two days of launch. As such, the game is now the top free app on the Google Play Store, beating the likes of Garena Free Fire, Call of Duty: Mobile and even Candy Crush Saga.

The game was launched on January 26 and had over 10 lakh downloads within a day. This was down to the sheer hype that the developer, nCore Games, managed to build around it. Before launch, FAU-G was touted as a ‘Made in India’ alternative to games released by Tencent, Activision, etc.  The game added a dash of patriotism by promising to tell stories of Indian soldiers on the frontlines. The game also included a level based on the Galwan Valley clash that occurred in 2020. Thanks to this hype, the game reportedly had over 40 million pre-registrations before launch.

FAU-G is the top free game on the Google Play Store

FAU-G currently has a rating of 3.5 starts with a total of 3,81,165 reviews. This is a decrease from the 3.9 stars that the game had yesterday. The game only offers the Galwan Valley mission to play at launch. The multiplayer-focused 5v5 Team Deathmatch and the Free For All mode will be added later. It should also be noted that the game only offers melee combat, and it is not yet known if firearms will be added in the future.

FAU-G also offers in-app purchases that range from Rs 19, all the way to Rs 2,999. This gives players Tokens, which is the game’s version of premium currency. These Tokens can be used to purchase weapons, and player characters. Players can also earn some Tokens for free by watching advertisements.

Indian government extends ban on TikTok and 58 other banned apps: Report

The Indian government has extended the ongoing ban on TikTok and 58 other apps including the likes of Shareit, UC Browser, Mi Community, Clash of Kings and more. These apps were among the 59 apps that were banned in June 2020 in India as they were found to be “engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order.”

According to reports by LiveMint, Reuters and Medianama that cites sources in the know, the Indian government has issued fresh orders to the app companies as it remains unsatisfied with the responses provided by them over data security and privacy concerns. The apps banned to operate in India include TikTok, Shareit, UC Browser, Clash of Kings, Mi Community, WeChat, UC News, Weibo, Xender, Xiaomi Mi Video Call, ES File Explorer, CamScanner and more.

Indian Government ban TikTok

The Indian government issued new orders extending the ban on these apps in the week of January 18, the report states. TikTok, one of the premier names in the list of banned apps, has already started scaling back its operations from India after it retained all of its Indian staffers even with the ongoing ban.

In a statement to Medianama, a TikTok spokesperson said, “We have worked steadfastly to comply with the Government of India orders issued on June 29, 2020. We continually strive to make our apps comply with local laws and regulations and do our best to address any concerns they have. It is therefore disappointing that in the ensuing seven months, despite our efforts we have not been given a clear direction on how and when our apps could be reinstated. It is deeply regretful that after supporting our 2000+ employees in India for more than half a year, we have no choice but to scale back the size of our workforce. We look forward to receiving the opportunity to relaunch TikTok and support the hundreds of millions of users, artists, storytellers, educators and performers in India.”

Just last year, the Indian government has banned over 220 apps including the second wave of 118 apps that were restricted for use from September 2. PUBG Mobile was also among these 118 apps banned and while the developers of the popular battle royale game have announced an India-centric version of the game, it is yet to release it. It is unlikely that the launch of PUBG Mobile India may happen anytime soon, given that the government just extended the ban on the first wave of banned apps from 2020.

Airtel demonstrates 5G network ahead of commercial rollout

Airtel has just announced that it has successfully demonstrated its Airtel 5G networks in Hyderabad. Airtel is taking on Jio in terms of operational success in 5G networks. Jio had earlier announced its launch of 5G services in 2021.

Airtel states that it has successfully orchestrated operations of Airtel 5G and 4G networks concurrently. This is broadcast over a liberalized spectrum in the 1800 MHz band through the Non-Standalone network technology. The company says that their 5G network is capable of delivering up to 10x speeds. Compared to existing technologies, it allows users to download a movie in a couple of seconds on a 5G phone.

Airtel has started testing its own Airtel 5G networks in Hyderabad

Currently, Airtel is using Ericsson 4G (DSS) as its equipment partner to deliver its 4G and 5G networks. Existing technology-neutral spectrums in mid-bands (1800/2100/2300 MHz) and sub-GHz bands (800/900 MHz) help in this regard. The technology allows Airtel to operate the 4G and 5G networks dynamically over the same spectrum block. The company states that it can deploy 5G networks easily through means of a simple software upgrade. There is no need to go through tedious hardware and network structure remodelling. Basically, with no major increase in operational costs, it allows Airtel to roll out its 5G services.

Airtel stated that once they get the government approval and the right spectrum bands available in adequate quantity, they will be able to roll out the 5G network in the country in a matter of months. Airtel did not provide any specific timeline for the commercial rollout of the 5G network in the country.

“The moment we receive government approvals, and we have the right spectrum bands and in adequate quantities, we'll be able to roll this [5G] out immediately,” said Gopal Vittal, MD, and CEO, Bharti Airtel, during a virtual media briefing.

OnePlus Launcher update gives older OnePlus phones a taste of OxygenOS 11

OnePlus has been releasing frequent upgrades to their new devices such as the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. But, when it comes to older flagships, the company seems to be dawdling. The OnePlus 7 and 7T just received beta builds for OxygenOS 11. And, the roadmap for the stable build seems a month off.

Nonetheless, the company has found a new way to give the users a taste of the new upcoming update. They have released the OxygenOS 11 launcher available to the phones running Android 10 based OxygenOS devices. First spotted by Android Police, this new launcher update will give the older OnePlus device the look and feel of the new OxygenOS 11.

OxygenOS 11 beta build now rolling out for OnePlus 7 and 7T

The update will not feature all the bells and whistles of Android 11. Only the layout and launcher UI upgrades of the look and feel of the new generational update to come. The new launcher could see welcome improvements, but the reviews on the Google Play Store show a story otherwise as it is receiving some negative feedback.

OnePlus 7 and 7T OxygenOs 11 Rollout

Devices running Android 10 based on OxygenOS will support the new launcher upgrade. This includes OnePlus 6 series, the OnePlus 6T line, the OnePlus 7 and 7T series, and the OnePlus Nord. According to a spokesperson quoted by Android Police, the Nord N10 and Nord N100 will be added to this list later this week.

The stable version of Android 11 is yet to hit these older devices. The rollout could take longer as the OxygenOS 11 beta builds for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T have been released last month. So, much older devices will have to wait longer in the line to get the update.

In fact, OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro users have received the latest OxygenOS 11 update back in October. You can read more about that story, here.
