Android TV UI update makes it a lot like Google TV

The Android TV UI has been fairly simple with a row of apps highlighting the various streaming services installed. There are also rows specific to streaming apps highlighting their content. It is a simple UI, especially when you compare it to what's on offer via PatchWall on Xiaomi TVs and the Fire TV UI on the Amazon Fire TV Stick.

However, Google drastically changed its UI when they launched the new Chromecast in 2020 and at CES 2021, we saw the announcement of a bunch of TVs from Sony and TCL, to name a few, that will come with the Google TV UI. But, it looks like older Android TVs are getting a facelift as well.

New Android TV UI

Google has announced that starting today, Android TVs in the US, Australia, Canada, Germany, and France will start receiving the new UI. There is no information yet on when the new UI will come to India.

There is also no information on what version of Android or what TV models the new Google TV-like Android TV UI will be available on.

Android TV UI: New Features

The new UI is very similar to the UI found on the Chromecast launched in 2020 with Google TV. The new UI brings with it three tabs - Home, Discover and apps.

Home, as the name suggests, is the home screen you will see when you switch on the TV. It looks a lot like the current Android TV home screen with the top row giving you access to your apps followed by content recommendations. This UI has been tweaked with a visual makeover though.

The Discover tab gives users personalized recommendations on the new Android TV UI.

The Discover tab will give users personalized recommendations based on the content consumed. It isn't clear whether users will be able to create different profiles. We have seen the new UI on the third-gen Fire TV Stick (review) give users the ability to have 6 different profiles.

The last tab on the home screen is the Apps tab which will show you your apps available on the TV. It isn't clear whether a user will get new app recommendations on this screen.

Gas Grenade now available in Call of Duty: Mobile, heres how to get it

Call of Duty: Mobile’s new Gas Grenade is finally available to players. The new grenade will be available via a seasonal challenge. So players will have to complete specific tasks in order to unlock it. These include killing a select number of enemies, using a specific weapon a certain number of times.

What is the Gas Grenade in Call of Duty: Mobile

The Gas Grenade falls under the tactical grenade category, alongside other tactical weapons like the flashbang, smoke grenade and Trophy system. When deployed, the grenade releases a cloud of tear gas. This slows down opponents while blurring their vision and causing the player character to start coughing. As such, the weapon will work best in choke points on the map (pun intended).

How to get the Gas Grenade

The seasonal challenge to get the Gas Grenade is called Deadly Mist. The first step in unlocking the grenade tasks players with throwing tactical equipment eight times in MP matches. Doing so will net them 200 Credits. Step two asks players to throw Cryo Bombs five times in MP matches. This will net them a Wrap skin for the smoke grenade. If players don’t have the Cryo Bomb, they can buy it from the in-game Credit Store.

The next step is fairly simple as it tasks players with killing 30 enemies in MP matches. However, the catch is that players will need to have the Tactician+ Perk equipped. This will grant the player 10 Weapon XP cards. Finally, players will then have to break any enemy Scorestreak three times using an EMP grenade. This will unlock the Gas Grenade. If players want, they can use the Gas Grenade 10 times in MP matches to unlock the Dystopia on TV calling card.

Besides the Gas Grenade, the Season 1 New Order update for Call of Duty: Mobile will release the SKS Marksman’s Rifle for MP matches, sometime this month. The weapon is one of two new weapons added to the game. You can learn more about both weapons here.

Over 25 lakh Airtel subscribers data allegedly leaked online, Airtel denies breach

Airtel is in the centre of a massive data breach that left all of its user data vulnerable to potential theft. A hacker group going by the name of Red Rabbit Team has posted details of as many as 25 lakh (2.5 million) Airtel subscribers online as “sample data” and is looking to sell all subscriber data for $3,500 bitcoins. The website where the sample data was posted has been taken down earlier this week, however, the hacker group allegedly remains in possession of all Airtel subscribers data.

Another Big Data Breach? A Hacker Group alleged uploaded "shell" in @airtelindia Server. Now selling all India Airtel subscribers data including Aadhaar Number. Posted 2.5 Million as sample data. — Rajshekhar Rajaharia (@rajaharia) February 2, 2021

The Airtel data breach came into the spotlight when Rajshekhar Rajaharia, a security researcher in India posted a tweet with screenshots of the same sample data. Most details from these screenshots have been redacted, considering the sensitivity of the data sets leaked. The hacker group posted data points of over 25 lakh Airtel subscribers including details like City, Gender, Full name, Date of birth, Service status, phone number, House number, Aadhaar number, Passport, Voter ID, Father/Husband name and IMSI (International mobile subscriber identity) number.

Strange! @airtelindia already aware about this alleged breach since last 3 months. Hacker posted all email conversations with airtel too. They also posted POC video. What steps taken to remove and patch? I am also an Airtel Subscriber.#InfoSec #DataLeak #GDPR #databreaches pic.twitter.com/Tdu9mMMIOW

— Rajshekhar Rajaharia (@rajaharia) February 2, 2021

The sample data sets released contains details of Airtel users from regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Delhi, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka and more. Moreover, Rajshekhar also posted a video of a conversation between the hacker group and Airtel’s Security Incident Response Team (SIRT) dating back to December 2020. This indicates that Airtel was aware of a potential data breach from the past two months or so. The hackers were planning to extort the same amount from Airtel, but it didn’t seem to work out.

Moreover, Rajshekhar also revealed that the hackers targeted one of Airtel’s server where they uploaded a shell script which is essentially a malicious file that gives control of a server to the hackers. Through this technique, the hackers were able to gain access to Airtel’s servers. Having said that, Airtel has outright denied any data breach on its servers.

“Airtel takes great pride in deploying various measures to safeguard the privacy of its customers. In this specific case, we confirm that there is no data breach at our end. In fact, the claims made by this group reveal glaring inaccuracies and a large proportion of the data records do not even belong to Airtel. We have already apprised the relevant authorities of the matter,” Airtel said in a statement to the media.

Another cybersecurity researcher Avinash Jain told The Economic Times that it is certain that data of Airtel users have leaked online. “Still cannot comment on what is the number, but on verification of the data posted by the hacking team, it is found to be true,” Avinash added.

It remains to be seen whether Airtel launches a full-scale investigation into the alleged data breach or stands its ground denying the breach.
