Personalized recommendations for PatchWall UI on Xiaomi Mi TVs is in the works

With the growth in OTT services and platforms, one can get quite lost in the sea of content options. One can easily spend more time hunting for the right show or movie to watch than actually watching it. One way to ensure you get content recommended based on your preference is personalization. Amazon recently revamped its UI on the third-gen Fire TV Stick (review) and the Fire TV Stick Lite to offer personalization based on the user. It can support up to 6 different profiles, and you can learn more about it here. However, another smart TV UI is looking to offer personalization to its users - Xiaomi with its PatchWall UI.

Digit had the opportunity to sit down (virtually) with Eshwar Nilakantan, Category lead - TV, Mi India and Sudeep Sahu, Senior Product Manager, Mi India. During the course of the conversation, we spoke about a lot of things, including Xiaomi’s TV journey in India, the evolution of PatchWall as a UI and Xiaomi’s plans in the TV space.

When asked what the next big feature coming to PatchWall is, Sudeep tells us “We are constantly working on what to bring as the next feature. There are a few areas where we would obviously like to focus on—one being, personalization, where people can personalize based on the Mi ID. So, currently, we already have a log-in for signing in using the Mi ID, and the team is working to bring that feature (personalization)”. You can catch this part of the conversation at the 11 minutes, 13 seconds mark in the video below.

Why personalization makes sense as the next big feature for the Mi TV?

Xiaomi’s Mi TVs offers the best of both worlds - Vanilla Android TV UI for the techie in you and the PatchWall UI for those that want a seamless content experience. The biggest USP of PatchWall is that it presents content before the streaming services. With more than 25 content partners, the PatchWall UI is filled with content from a mix of service providers gunning for your attention. While Xiaomi’s TV UI has features like “Top 10 in India” and “recently added” the one thing that’s missing is recommending content based on user preferences. If I like action movies, or I am a documentary buff or enjoy standup comedy, imagine the volume of content options I can get from Xiaomi’s partners without worrying about which service provider the content is available on. It could really be the next big step for the UI.

PatchWall has evolved to offer interesting features over the past few years. Let’s look at some of them. A feature called Collections gives users access to curated movies across genres, actors, etc. On the Mi QLED TV 4K (review) Xiaomi also introduced a dedicated space to find HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision content making it easy to find content mastered for the specific HDR formats.

Xiaomi has ensured that Kids Mode is safe even when searching for a word like War. You can go back to our interaction and learn about Kids Mode starting at 9 minutes and 40 seconds. Eshwar Nilakantan Category lead- TV, Mi India tells us, “Just to give you an example if you use ‘War’ as a keyword you will get war documentaries or any content related to war. Or even the recently released movie, War. And if you do the same search (War), in Kids Mode, we will show Star Wars and other cartoons which are age-appropriate. Same search words, different results.”

Personalization is the future of content consumption on Smart TVs. Google is looking to revamp the Android TV UI, and you can learn more about it here. LG is also revamping its WebOS and gave us a glimpse of the same at CES 2021. You can learn more about LG’s new UI here.

M Night Shyamalans Old Teaser Is Out Now

Universal Pictures has finally released the first teaser for M Night Shyamalan’s upcoming psychological horror-thriller - Old. Following a countdown of cryptic tweets on his Twitter earlier this week, the terrifying 30-second TV spot was debuted during Super Bowl LV broadcast. Old is currently set to release only in theatres on 23 July 2021.

The creepy teaser opens up by introducing us to a small family, who are on a leisurely trip to a fairly-secluded beach. As the beautiful, fun-filled, tropical holiday goes by, things soon start taking a nightmarish turn. Within the span of a few hours, their 6-year-old son, who ran off to play hide-and-seek is seen returning as a young adult (Alex Wolfe). “He was six years old this morning”, his mother (Vicky Krieps) exclaims in disbelief. Other families at the spot also experience similar troubles, as we see Eliza Scanlen growing up, undergoing all three stages of pregnancy, and popping out a baby in just a matter of hours. What follows next is a quick flurry of hair-raising sequences where the adults develop a new set of wrinkles, age-induced seizures, and eventually start decomposing. Everyone at this “utopia” of a beach is ageing rapidly and uncontrollably, reducing their entire lives to a single day.

Written and directed by M Night Shyamalan, Old is an upcoming psychological horror-thriller inspired by the French graphic novel - “Sandcastle”, by Pierre Oscar Levy and artist Frederik Peeters. As depicted above, the plot is mainly centred around a small family on an outing, who discover that the quiet beach they were relaxing on is somehow causing them to grow older by the minute. Other than the aforementioned cast members, the film also stars Gael GarcĂa Bernal, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abbey Lee, Aaron Pierre, Embeth Davidtz, Emun Elliott, Kathleen Chalfant, and Thomasin McKenzie.

Old marks Shyamalan’s long-awaited return to the big screen since 2019’s “Glass”, while he was busy working on his acclaimed Apple TV+ psychological horror series - “Servant”. Principal photography for this new movie began on 26 September 2020, on the Dominican Republic, and would be the first time the director has shot somewhere entirely outside Greater Philadelphia. The film is being produced by Ashwin Rajan and Marc Bienstock, while Steven Schneider serves as the executive producer.

E3 Set To Return This Year As A Digital Event

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) is reportedly planning a digital E3 event for 2021. Plans have yet to be fully-approved by members and requires backing from major game publishing companies. The massive, three-day-long games expo was forced to be cancelled last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Exclusive: E3 is pushing forward with plans for a digital event in June, including three days of live streamed content and remote game demos. However, it still needs the backing of publishers. ➡️ https://t.co/eIRwzjHy7C pic.twitter.com/7e9PvyKaPp

— VGC (@VGC_News) February 8, 2021

The news comes from a VGC report which talks about E3 2021 pitch documents sent to game publishers around the world. The paper outlines its proposals for this year’s event, which would see three days of live-streamed coverage, and would be held on the previously announced dates of 15-17 June. Further breakdown of the plan lists, “multiple two-hour keynote sessions from games partners, an awards show, a June 14 preview night and other smaller streams from game publishers, influencers and media partners.”

A week prior to the broadcast, there will be media previews (trailers and teasers), as well as playable demos released to the public. Media outlets should also be getting to test out bigger games, as the ESA will be allowing partner companies to remotely stream their demos with direct one-to-one interaction and assistance from the developers. Keep in mind that these plans have yet to be approved by ESA members, which comprises of some of the largest companies within the games industry.

Some of those large companies (Sony, EA, and Activision) had already abandoned the show long before the pandemic hit, in order to run their own digital events, as seen with last year’s Summer Game Fest. Speaking of which, industry titan, Geoff Keighley, who quit E3 last year due to disagreements over direction will not be involved again. And will be focussing on SGF 2021. This was confirmed via a private message exchange between VGC and Geoff himself.

Although there are no details on how many publishers have signed up for E3 2021 yet, the report does mention that a six-figure sum is required to join the program. Due to the fairly lumpsum amount, some major publishers have already begun backing out, and would rather run their own digital events. Or might collaborate with Geoff Keighley. Who knows? Either way, the ESA is insistent on the idea that a unified games event is the right way to go, as it “would grab the world’s attention more effectively than a series of smaller shows.” Which is true, to an extent. But with smaller, stretched-out events, there was always something to look forward to every week. It’s usually the community themselves that hype things up for no reason, only to be met with regret later down the line.

It is also worth mentioning that plans for a physical E3 event have not been officially cancelled yet. But it is highly unlikely to take place anyway, making the digital show the primary focus. Additional details in the ESA proposal talks about the schedule, which is set to run from 10 AM-10 PM EST, with regional replays scheduled for Europe, China and the Middle East. The timetable also looks similar to past E3 events, where there’s a 30-minute preshow, followed by a two-hour exclusive press conference, and then a Q&A session. The notes also boast of a “charitable after-party” stream.

Even E3 themselves confirmed their return on Twitter last night, by stating that they’ve been hard at work on this year’s event. Any further word on the matter and the publishers involved will be shared soon enough.
