Qualcomm, Microsoft and Google oppose Nvidias purchase of ARM Holdings

It was in September 2020 that Nvidia announced it was acquiring ARM for a juicy sum of $40 Billion. The agreement was reached between Nvidia and the SoftBank Group, which currently owns ARM Holdings and has been pending regulatory approval. Unfortunately, the deal is encountering major regulatory hurdles, with brands coming out in protest all over the world. The latest opposition comes from Microsoft, Google and Qualcomm who are urging regulators to prevent the deal from going through.

ARM isn’t in the business of making SoCs, but instead, licenses the instruction set and core designs to others. Currently, over 90 percent of the smartphones in the world use ARM’s designs for their SoCs. Apple, which recently moved over to their own M1 chipset, also licenses ARM’s instruction set but does not utilise ARM cores. Needless to say, Apple too has come out against the merger. Interestingly, Amazon’s Graviton2 processor, which offers incredible performance jump over Intel and AMD’s parts, also utilise ARM’s N1 cores which are a derivative of the Cortex-A76 cores from ARM. With ARM’s designs being used in so many different areas of computing, companies are worried that once Nvidia gains control over ARM, the graphics company might leverage licensing deals that are currently in place. While Nvidia and ARM aren’t direct competitors, once the graphics company acquires ARM, tech companies allege there is going to be a conflict of interest and Nvidia would be in the position to gravely impact product and business models of most companies involved.

Pushback from big tech companies isn’t the only thing jeopardising the acquisition though. Arm Holding’s China division is going to be another major roadblock in this journey. ARM China has six investment firms, of which, four are now controlled by Allen Wu, Chief Executive ARM China. In June 2020, ARM China’s board moved to remove Wu as the Chief Executive, with both parties almost reaching an amicable separation. However, the value of the nearly 17 percent stake owned by Wu through the four investment firms has become a bone of contention, with Wu arguing that ARM China’s value has gone up five times since its establishment. In the time since then, Wu has put his own security team in charge of ARM China, denying entry to representatives of ARM and ARM China. Emails from ARM headquarters to employees of ARM China are also being filtered out, according to a report by Financial Times. Unless this standoff in the Chinese arm of ARM is resolved, the acquisition will not be able to go through, since it requires the approval of authorities in the U.S., Europe, China and the U.K.

As it appears, the deal between Nvidia and SoftBank for ARM Holdings seems to be an uphill battle. It is true that once Nvidia acquires ARM, it will directly hold a key piece of technology needed by its competitors to do business. Qualcomm seems to be building a case against the deal, stating that the only way Nvidia can make this transaction profitable is to eventually act as the gatekeeper for ARM’s IP. In essense, Qualcomm is suggesting that Nvidia could in the future leverage higher licensing fee, especially from competitors for ARM’s IP. While this could potentially be true, Qualcomm doesn’t really have the best track record with respect to good licensing practices. The mobile SoC manufacturer has been time and again been called out for its unfair licensing practices, given its monopolistic hold on the mobile SoC market. This was one of the reasons why Apple and Qualcomm went to court a few years ago, a legal battle.

Call of Duty: Mobile - Tips to help you make the most of the Gravity Vortex Gun Operator Skill

The Gravity Vortex Gun is the newest Operator Skill added to Call of Duty: Mobile. The skill equips the player with a large weapon that acts more like a rocket launcher. The Gravity Vortex Gun is a part of the free Battle Pass, and it can be unlocked by anyone. All players need to do is reach Tier 14 of the pass. Reaching that shouldn’t be much of an issue if the player can play daily regularly.

Like other Operator Skills, it has been designed to devastate opponents and give players a massive boost. To make the most of the weapon, it needs to be used correctly.

Make your shots count

The Gravity Vortex Gun only gives you two shots, so it is vital to make those shots count. Each shot will release a gravity vortex that will suck players in towards it. After a few seconds, the vortex will implode and cause explosive damage. Reports suggest that the rounds can be destroyed by a Trophy System, but we were unable to test this out for ourselves.

Fire at the ground

Players should note that the gravity vortex will only open when the round hits a solid surface. This means that it can be quite easy to overshoot and miss your intended target, As such, players will have to aim the weapon slightly towards the opponents feet in order to hit them.

Not quite as useful in the open

The gravity vortex created by the weapon is pretty inconspicuous. As such, the Operator Skill loses some of its effectiveness out in the open. That’s because people see the vortices from pretty far off and give them a wide berth. So it's advisable to not use the weapon in open areas.

Devastating in enclosed spaces

The Gravity Vortex Gun is best used in enclosed spaces like rooms, or corridors. The resulting vortex will suck in pretty much every enemy in the room, and will practically clear it for you. Just be careful as the vortex might just suck you in too.

Know when to equip it

The Gravity Vortex Gun seems to be ideal for certain maps and game modes. Small maps like Shipment 1944 and the new Reclaim map seem ideal for the weapon. However, the Operator Skill is especially useful in game modes like Hardpoint and Headquarters as these game modes see opponents huddled close together in enclosed spaces. Just the sort of thing that will happen in these game modes.

Hopefully, these tips will help you make the most of the Gravity Vortex Gun. Of course, this isn't the only new addition in the latest Season 1 New Order update of Call of Duty: Mobile. The update also includes two new weapons, and you can learn more about those here.

After the launch of the Realme X7 series in India earlier this month, there are rumours that the company is planning to launch the Narzo 30 series soon. This new lineup will follow the Narzo 20 series which launched in India back in September 2020.

According to a new leak by popular leakster Ishan Agarwal, Realme could be working on some gaming accessories to go with the Narzo 30 series. Interestingly, Realme’s choice of accessories that includes a gaming mouse and mousepad are also indicative that Realme-branded laptops could be on their way.

The gaming mouse and the pad also indicates at an imminent launch of a gaming laptop? #realme is yet to announce the launch dates of the narzo 30 series. What do you think? pic.twitter.com/0XBQpITfq2

— Ishan Agarwal (@ishanagarwal24) February 12, 2021

Ishan has shared an image that depicts a gaming mouse along with a mousepad and likely a joystick controller. The gaming mouse and mousepad have the Narzo branding which gives way to laptops under the same branding in the future. However, looking closer, the mouse shown in the leaked image surprisingly resembles the Logitech G502 Hero while the joystick controller looks like a rebranded version of the Flydigi Shadow Stinger joystick for smartphones.

Moreover, the company has asked its fans to choose the retail box for the Narzo 30 series by voting amongst the options over on its forums. The Realme Narzo 30 Pro was also spotted visiting TENAA in a listing that revealed it could feature a 6.5-inch display, 4,880mAh battery and Android 11 out-of-the-box.

Realme is yet to reveal the exact launch date for the upcoming Narzo 30 series and given that it just introduced the X7 series in India its likely that the launch will take place in the coming months.

Garena Free Fire bans over 13 million accounts in 2 weeks for hacking

Garena has announced that it has banned over 1.3 million accounts in the past two weeks for hacking. The exact number of accounts banned stands at 1,335,831. An additional 80,290 accounts were banned for intentionally teaming with hackers. Garena states that 50% of the accounts were banned following reports from players.

Reason for the ban from Garena Free Fire

Garena notes that 62% of the accounts were banned for using auto-aim hacks, while 28% were banned for teleportation hacks. Through wall and Antenna hacks were used by 3% and 2% of the banned accounts respectively. 5% of the banned accounts were using miscellaneous hacks.

Garena Free Fire’s response

Garena says that it has adjusted its anti-hack measures and optimized its detection methods. Last year, a Garena spokesperson told Digit, “Our anti-cheat strategy relies on a two-pronged approach – our screening technologies as well as community reports.” The spokesperson noted that the company was constantly “refining” their anti-cheating toolkit

In the interview, the Garena spokesperson noted that the company is extremely strict when it comes to incidents of hacking. “We have zero tolerance for any activity that undermines the integrity and fairness of our game. We will permanently ban anyone – amateur or pro – who is found to be cheating. Moreover, pro players who cheat will be expelled from our tournaments along with their entire team,” the spokesperson told Digit

During the Garena Free Fire India Championship 2021 Spring qualifier, team Old Skool member AAYUSH was allegedly caught using hacks. According to a post on Facebook, he was caught by the in-game anti-hack system. As a result, the entire team was disqualified from the tournament. Further, the offending player’s account will be banned for a year. Based on our previous conversation with Garena, it is highly unlikely that AAYUSH will be able to put forth an appeal and get his ban overturned.
