Asus ROG Phone 5 moniker confirmed

Asus is skipping the Asus ROG Phone 4 and will launch the Asus ROG Phone 5. This isn't the first time we have seen a brand drop the ‘4’ from its iterative product name. The same happened when OnePlus launched the OnePlus 5 after the OnePlus 3T skipping the ‘4’ entirely. This is because the number 4 is considered unlucky in some Asian countries. The information about the ROG Phone 5 comes from a Weibo post. The post goes on to reveal that there is a Tencent branded variant of the phone in the works as well, but it isnt clear if we will see this variant of the phone in markets outside China.

The Asus ROG Phone is tipped to launch in March and a Geekbench listing has highlighted some of the specifications of the device. A listing for the model number Asus_I005DA is live on Geekbench which is said to be the ROG Phone 5. The phone in the listing is powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor which is paired with 16GB RAM and is running on Android 11.

Apart from this, the phone is said to come with a 6.78-inch Full HD+ AMOLED panel and 144Hz high refresh rate. The listing shows that the display will be AniMe dot matrix panel that first debuted on the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. With AniMe dot matrix, users can customize the screen to display any image or text message. For cameras, the Geekbench listing shows the phone will come with a triple-lens setup on the back. The lens set-up is reported to feature a 64MP primary lens.

The Geekbench listing shows that the phone comes with a dual 3,000mAh battery that totals to 6,000mAh of charge with support for 65W fast charging.

Garena Free Fire offering 40 discounts on Theme Gun Store today

Garena Free Fire has announced that it will offer a special discount in the in-game Theme Gun Store. The game will offer players discounts of up to 40%. However, gamers should note that the discount is only applicable today. These theme sets are usually available for 25 in-game diamonds. During the sale, they will be available for 15 diamonds.

Garena Free Fire Theme Gun Store: What’s on sale?

The Theme Gun Store in Free Fire gives players access to a bunch of different themed weapon skins. These themed weapons alter the base stats of each weapon. Themes on offer include the Game Streamer theme, Graffiti theme, Biker theme. Buying a theme set gives players the chance to win a random themed gun from that particular set. So, if a player buys an Engineer theme set, then the player will either get an MP-40 Engineer, An94 Engineer, or the XM8 Engineer.

Garena Free Fire Theme Gun Store

However, it should also be noted that a majority of the weapons in these crates seem to be Trial Weapon cards. This means that the weapon will only be with the user for a limited time. This could range from anywhere between 24 hours to seven days. Garena also informs users that the probability of drawing a Trial Card is 97%.

If players are on the hunt for something for free, then they should log in to Free Fire on February 27. The developers have announced that they will be giving away their newest character for free. The character in question is called Shirou and he was added in the recent OB26 Project Cobra update. He comes with a passive ability called Damage Delivered. The ability marks any enemy that attacks the player. It should be noted that the marker is only visible to the player and only works if the enemy is within 80m of the player when attacking.

The marker does more than simply making the enemy easily visible. The first shot on the enemy does additional armour penetration. The amount of additional armour penetration increases and the cooldown timer decreases with each level increase in Shirou. You can learn more about Shirou here.

Sandes and Samvad messaging apps being developed by Indian government as WhatsApp alternatives

Sandes app is an instant messaging service that rivals WhatsApp and is currently being tested by the Indian government. The app has been developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) under the government’s Digital India venture. The instant messaging app falls under the Government Instant Messaging System (GIMS) and can be used by any government official or the general public.

However, Sandes is currently in beta testing and is accepting registrations only with mobile numbers or a valid government email ID. When and if it is released publicly, users will be able to sign-up by entering either their mobile number or an email ID. Let’s take a look at everything we know about Sandes, its features and how can a user sign up for the new messaging app.

What is Sandes and why should you care?

Sandes means message in Hindi and is based on the GIMS that’s developed by the NIC. A source in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeITY) told NDTV’s Sanket Upadhyay, “A need was being felt within the government for a very long time to have our own, independent, and self-owned instant messaging service. Development of these apps began way before the present WhatsApp controversy.”

Sandes is essentially the government’s answer to WhatsApp and more such platform that has been marred in controversy over its privacy policy. Nevertheless, Sandes claims that personal and group conversations remain end-to-end encrypted and that the system cannot read any messages exchanged by users.

Most of the feature set offered by Sandes mirror those we have been using on WhatsApp, Telegram and the likes. Users can talk to their friends, family and share images, videos, GIFs and more with each other. Apart from that, the app is also integrated with DigiLocker which is capable of storing any PDF files received in Sandes.

With Sandes, the government feels that it is safeguarding people’s personal data by keeping it inside the country as opposed to global players that often use it for targeting advertisements. Interestingly, Sandes has an admin portal that the NIC may use for “administration and monitoring of the platform”.

Moreover, the MEITY source also revealed a second app called Samvad which translates to conversation in English and is being developed by the NIC alongside. However, details on Samvad are scarce at the moment. It could be a separate app altogether or could be a government-only communication app.

"It may entirely be possible that one of these apps shall remain for the internal consumption of government employees and not be rolled out for the public," the source told NDTV.

Sandes, on the other hand, is available for Android and iOS smartphones and users can download it to get started with the messaging app. The app also verifies government employees accounts for easier identification. Currently, the Sandes app supports non-official groups with 50 members, official groups with 100 users and 10 contacts in the broadcast list at a time.

How to download and use the Sandes app?

Sandes app is available on both Android and iOS platforms and there is a web application as well but it is currently restricted for public use. The app is accepting registrations of users who provide their mobile number though once the public launch happens it's likely to accept email IDs as well.

To download Sandes on Android or iOS, follow these steps:

Download Sandesh for Android here and iOS here

Once downloaded, open the app and register by mobile number

Enter other details including name, gender and provide the necessary permissions

You can then sync your contacts to the app and send messages to people on Sandes app.

Samsung TV launch event Unbox and Discover scheduled for March 2

Samsung is hosting its ‘Unbox and Discover’ event on March 2, 2021, at 10 AM EST, which translates to 8 PM India time. According to Samsung, the company, “will share its vision for how the company’s latest innovative products are set to redefine the role of the TV through cutting-edge technologies, beautiful design and impactful partnerships”. The invite reads, “Unbox new screens inspired by you”. It isnt clear whether this will be the unveiling of some new products or availability announcements for Samsung’s 2021 TV lineup.

At CES 2021, we got a glimpse at the future of TV technology, and Samsung showed off what customers can expect in 2021. Samsung has a wide range and portfolio of TVs for consumers to choose from including MicroLEDs, Neo QLEDs, standard QLEDs, LCD TVs and more. Samsung will introduce 8K TV and 4K TVs. For India's budget segment, we can also expect some new Budget 2021 models to make an appearance.

Samsung had an impressive year in 2020 with soundbars as well and it isnt clear if we will see Samsung’s 2021 soundbars at the ‘Unbox and Discover’ event.

Tune in on March 2 @ 10am EST for the unboxing of new screens #UnboxandDiscoverhttps://t.co/VN3WgTqCNG

— Samsung Electronics (@Samsung) February 18, 2021

Samsung also introduced Object-Tracking Sound in 2020, and it looks like the company is expanding on the technology in 2021. The technology will be available in more models and more variants. It is possible we could hear something about Samsung’s Object Tracing Sound in TV speakers at the event, buts pure speculation at this point. While TV speakers have been the Achilles heel for premium TV tech, technology like Sony’s Accustic Surface does show potential for an enjoyable TV viewing experience without an external audio device. At CES 2021, LG also highlighted its Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO) which also vibrates the display to produce sound.

With the introduction of HDMI 2.1, premium TVs in 2021 will pack features that will cater to PC and console gamers in addition to cinema enthusiasts. Both Sony and LG have highlighted demoed brighter OLED panels, and it will be interesting to see how bright these new 2021 OLED’s can get and how they deal with burn-in. You can learn about Sony’s 2021 TV lineup here and LG’s 2021 TV lineup here.
