WhatsApp brings voice and video calling feature to its desktop app

After adding multiple new features to its app over the last few days, WhatsApp has now announced that it is officially rolling out support for voice and video calls to its desktop app. The company confirmed the same via a blog post detailing everything we need to know about this feature.

WhatsApp said its Windows and Mac app will only support one-to-one calls for now. This means the users will not be able to make group voice and video calls just yet. That feature is coming later but this itself is a pretty neat feature to have considering the fact we no longer have to reach out to our phones every time we get a WhatsApp call.

It will only support one-to-one calls for now.

Video calls will work "seamlessly" for both portrait and landscape orientation. It is, however, worth pointing out that the support for voice and video calls is not being extended to WhatsApp Web which is essentially the browser version of their service. It will probably land at a later date in the future, but you will need to have the desktop app to make voice and video calls.

The ability to make voice and video calls from the desktop should come in handy for millions of users who use WhatsApp desktop clients every day. If you are one of those who don't like using Google Meet or Zoom for one-to-one calls from the desktop, this is a blessing.

It seems like the folks over at WhatsApp are working around the clock to bring all these new features to the table. One may even say with these new additions, WhatsApp is just attempting to convince its users to agree to the changes it made to the privacy policy. There has been a lot of discussion around that on social media, and it will be interesting to see if its users will continue enjoying these features or ditch them for other alternatives.

Apple could launch the iPad Mini Pro this year with an 87-inch display

Over the last few years, Apple has unveiled new iPad models in the month of March. In 2018, it was the 9.7-inch iPad with the A10 Fusion chip. The iPad Air with A12 Bionic chip came out the following year and lastly, the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models came out last year in March.

This year, the company is expected to unveil new iPads too. If the rumours are something to go by, then it looks like we'll get the iPad Mini Pro variant this month in addition to the other iPad variants that the company decides to launch.

Apple could launch the iPad mini Pro this year.

As for the specifications, the iPad Mini Pro is said to sport an 8.7-inch display. The device will apparently have a slightly different chassis with increased width and reduced height compared to the existing iPad Mini 5. A few other rumours talk about different screen sizes, but let's just say that it'll measure under 9-inches. Reportedly, the iPad Mini Pro is currently in the design P2 stage beyond the R&D stage and the planning stage.

Apple iPad Mini Pro specifications and features

Apple is also expected to reduce the bezel size around the display. This decision makes sense if Apple wants to offer a bigger display in a chassis that's more or less similar to the existing iPad Mini models. That being said, it remains to be seen if we'll get Face ID or the same TouchID/Home button design.

The new iPad Mini Pro is also expected to offer support for 5G, which is the next generation of wireless connectivity. Currently, the iPhone 12 series phones are the only Apple devices to support 5G, and we won't be surprised to see "Pro" models of the iPad line up to ship with 5G support.

As you can see, the iPad Mini Pro is shaping up to be an excellent device. We are looking at a new display, potential Face ID support, and 5G connectivity. If the iPad Mini Pro inherits the premium features of the iPad Pro models, then Apple may have a very capable device at hand.

There's no word about the iPad Mini Pro's release date, but the company is expected to make an announcement any day now since it is the month of March. Just keep your eye peeled for more updates.

Nintendo Super Switch with OLED display: Everything we know so far

The Nintendo Switch is really the little console that could. When it was first announced, gamers were apprehensive of Nintendo’s latest hybrid console. Already burned by the disappointing Wii U, gamers were understandably hesitant. Fast-forward four years and the Switch has become one of the biggest success stories in gaming history. So successful, in fact, that Nintendo even released a Switch Lite in 2019. Considering Nintendo’s history with upgraded hardware, there are rumours floating around that we could even see a Super Switch, so to speak. According to a report on Bloomberg, it sounds like Nintendo are gearing up to launch an updated Switch with a bigger display by the end of 2021. As we've reported earlier, during the launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite, it was rumoured that the company is working on a more powerful version of the Switch console.

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite

Nintendo Switch with Samsung OLED Display

Here’s the kicker. The new Switch could come with a Samsung OLED display. The report also states that Samsung is looking at mass production of a 720p 7-inch display around June. These displays will then be shipped to assemblers in July. Nintendo has not announced anything on the topic as yet, so we should take all this news with a grain of salt. With the new Switch, Nintendo could be looking at how well the next generation of consoles have fared and maybe that factored into its decision.

As far as the OLED display is concerned, the 7-inch screen is definitely larger than the 6.2-inch on the original system. The report also goes on to say that the new Switch could output a 4K resolution when docked. There are also rumours of Nintendo switching from the Nvidia Tegra chips to the Samsung Exynos chip with an AMD GPU. This comes as Nvidia shifts its focus away from the Tegra chips to focus on other products and projects.

Nintendo Switch Lite Nintendo Switch in 2021

The Switch seems to still be going strong in its fourth year, taking on the likes of the PS4 and Xbox One X and still carving out a niche of its own. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are some of the best video games ever made, so it’s clear why Nintendo are still in the game, decades later. And, with games such as the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, the Breath of the Wild sequel and the mysterious Metroid 4 in development, Nintendo are showing that the Japanese video game giant still has what it takes to stand on its own. So, if you're thinking of buying a Switch, we've got five reasons why you should, right here.
