Flipkart launches Voice Search in Hindi and English: Heres how it works

Using your voice to search for something online rather than typing has become quite convenient and often times, these search results take users to an eCommerce website. Now it looks like Flipkart wants to bring the convenience of using voice search for products on Flipkart. Flipkart has launched “Voice Search”, the ability for a user to search for a product on the e-commerce website using his/her voice. It understands Hindi and English as of now. The ability to use your voice to search on Flipkart has been gradually rolling out since January and Flipkart says that “this year is witnessing impressive adoption across the country with initial trends showing over 5 million queries a day”.

According to Flipkart, more than 75% of internet users in India come from non-English speaking backgrounds and a majority of them reside in non-urban, rural areas. Also, tier-2 cities make up nearly half of all shoppers and contribute to three out of every five orders.

Flipkart introduced Voice Search to make it easier for customers to search for what they are looking for. Studies conducted by Flipkart reveals that “searching through voice is both natural and quicker as it is 3x faster than typing in English and 5x faster in Hindi, as per independent studies”.

Commenting on the introduction of the new capability, Jeyandran Venugopal, Chief Product and Technology Officer, Flipkart, said, “As a home-grown e-commerce company, Flipkart understands the heterogeneity of the Indian market and is committed to solving for the next 200 million users online while catering to the needs of all users to make e-commerce more inclusive. Voice search, along with some other initiatives by Flipkart, will make the digital commerce experience more convenient, accessible and seamless for the new wave of online shoppers.”

How to search using your voice on Flipkart

Simply tap on the search bar and press the microphone icon and start talking. It is as easy as searching on Google using your voice. If you don't see the microphone icon on your smartphone app, then worry not, you aren’t alone. As of writing this we also cannot see the microphone when trying to search using the Flipkart iOS app or the mobile website. Looks like the voice search ability isn't available to all.

Exclusive: Vivo X60, X60 Pro and X60 Pro+ set for March-end India launch, to feature Snapdragon 870, 888 SoCs

After launching its X60 series of phones in China, Vivo is now all set to bring the flagship series to Indian shores. The phone maker had launched three new phones under the line-up in its home country. And now, our sources close to the company have confirmed Vivo's plans of launching the three devices, X60, X60 Pro and X60 Pro+ in India before the end of this month.

But that's not all. We have also received exclusive information about the core hardware of the Indian models of the X60 series phones. Our source has confirmed the X60, X60 Pro and the X60 Pro+  will all be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets -- instead of featuring a mix of Exynos and Qualcomm chips as seen in China.

What's inside the X60 series?

As per our source, Vivo plans to equip the X60 and X60 Pro with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset. This recently launched chip is an enhanced version of the Snapdragon 865 SoC. Based on 7nm process technology, this chip comes with a Kryo 385 CPU and has a tri-cluster architecture. As such, the chipset gets a prime Cortex-A77 core running at 3.2GHz, sat next to three Cortex-A77 cores running at 2.4GHz and four remaining cores of Cortex-A55 at 1.8GHz. Graphics on this chip is handled by the Adreno 650 GPU which is paired with Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology and includes support for updatable GPU drivers.

As for the X60 Pro+, Vivo will equip the device with a Snapdragon 888 SoC -- the most powerful Qualcomm SoC available at the moment. This chipset has already been used on a number of flagships this year and promises flawless performance for all tasks, including gaming, photography, and multitasking.

Vivo X60 series: Expected specifications

Apart from the chipsets, we don't have any other confirmed information about the Indian models of the X60 series phones. However, we expect them to feature similar specs to what's available on the models launched in China.

As such, the Vivo X60 and X60 Pro will likely flaunt 6.56-inch Full HD+ (2376 x 1080 pixels) resolution displays that use an AMOLED panel with a 120Hz high refresh rate and offer HDR10+ playback certification. Paired with the above-mentioned chipsets could be up to 12GB of RAM on the phones.

The two phones will only differ when it comes to the cameras, with the Vivo X60 Pro expected to come with a quad-camera set-up on the back consists of a primary 48MP Sony IMX598 image sensor with an f/1.48 aperture and 4-axis optical image stabilization. The secondary lens could be a 13MP secondary ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120-degree field of view followed by a 13MP portrait camera and an 8MP periscope telephoto lens offering 5X optical zoom and up to 60X digital zoom. The Vivo X60 is also expected to feature a similar camera set-up, save for the telephoto camera.

As for the X60 Pro+, it should also feature the same display as on the other two X60 series phones. There will also be up to 12GB of RAM on this phone. Again, the major point of differentiation between the X60 Pro+ and the other two phones will be the cameras, with the X60 Pro+ flaunting a quad-camera setup that has been designed in collaboration with Zeiss optics. The primary lens here will likely be a 50MP primary camera with an f/1.6 aperture and OIS support followed by a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 114-degree field-of-view and gimbal stabilization. There may also be an 8MP periscope telephoto camera offering up to 5x optical zoom and a 32MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom.

Reliance Jio is developing a low-cost laptop called JioBook, will run on JioOS

After tasting success with its expansive 4G network and the JioPhone, it looks like Reliance Jio is now gearing up to launch an entirely new product. The company is reportedly preparing a laptop called JioBook. XDA Developers have revealed some key information about the laptop, and it gives us a very good idea of what to expect from this new Jio product.

According to the firmware reviewed by XDA, the JioBook is not running on Windows 10. Instead, the company has decided to go with Google's Android OS. The laptop will be running a custom version of Android which is expected to be called "JioOS". This is quite an interesting decision to go with Android instead of Windows, but only time will tell if it's any good.

Reliance Jio JioBook low-cost laptop could be in the works

Just like the JioPhone, the new JioBook is expected to be a low-cost machine. The prototype version of the laptop is currently using Qualcomm's Snapdragon 665 SoC, which is an 11nm chipset that dates back to early 2019. The chipset features a built-in 4G modem, so the JioBook will most likely take advantage of that to support cellular connectivity to Reliance Jio 4G network.

The JioBook is said to be in development since September 2020 and is expected to continue through the first half of 2021. The prototype version of the hardware spotted during the EVT, or Engineering Validation Test, had a Windows key, and it appears to be very basic. Here, check it out -

The JioBook will run on Android OS instead of Windows 10.

The final version of the laptop is expected to look a little different and potentially better than the one seen above. Since we are talking about a low-cost machine, it is best to keep your expectations in check. Jio is trying to source some low-cost components from a variety of sources to keep the price low. The laptop is expected to have a 1366×768 resolution display and the test iterations of the JioBook were seen running with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of eMMC 5.1 storage.

The laptop is also expected to have a mini HDMI connector, support for Wi-Fi over 2.4 and 5Ghz frequencies, Bluetooth, and more. We expect the laptop to ship with Android because Qualcomm and Microsoft only support Windows 10 on ARM for a handful of chipsets and the Snapdragon 665 SoC is not one of them.

JioBook Expected Launch Date & Price

Before we talk about the expected launch date, it is worth pointing out that Jio may end up naming the laptop something else. The "JioBook" branding was spotted during XDA's analysis of the PC's firmware, which may or may not be the final branding on the box.

As of now, it's hard to tell exactly when this new piece of hardware will launch. But the schedule reviewed by XDA suggests that assembly of the laptop could happen around mid-May. Given Jio's previous track-record, we expect the JioBook to retail at an incredibly low price. This particular laptop has a huge potential to gain dominance over the market, thereby helping Jio to potentially take its digital services to the next level.
