Man falls through ice, saved by Apple Watch: Heres how

Apple Watch has got a lot of good press for saving people's lives with the help of its sensors, and now, a new report has emerged that the Apple Watch has helped save another man's life in the city of Somersworth, New Hampshire.

As per a report by 9To5Mac, a resident of the city, William Rogers, fell through the ice on Sunday, and only survived with the help of his Apple Watch. As per the report, Rogers, who has been an ice skating teacher pretty much all his life, fell into the Salmon Falls River in Somersworth when the ice broke. He was then stuck inside the icy water for several minutes without being able to get out of the hole.

Apple Watch saves man's life

"First thing I did was try to walrus up on the ice knowing that I needed to get out of the water as quickly as possible and the ice just kept breaking underneath me... I remember telling myself, ‘OK, don’t panic. Don’t panic. Figure out what your options are here,’” Rogers said. Since no one was around, and he couldn’t reach his phone, he was in the water for several minutes as hypothermia started setting in.

According to a statement given by Rogers, when he realised he could not reach his phone, he remembered he was wearing his Apple Watch. At which point, he used the watch to call 911. And it was this call that saved his life. “I told them that I probably had 10 minutes before I was not gonna be able to respond anymore,” Rogers said on the call. Luckily for him, it took the firefighters five minutes to reach him. "He kept his wits about him. He remained calm, and he did what he had to do to ensure his survival," chief George Kramlinger of the Somersworth Fire Department said.

While in the past Apple Watch has saved many lives with the help of its battery of sensors, this time around it was a feature called Emergency SOS, which automatically calls local emergency services when the user asks Siri or if the watch detects a sudden fall.
