OnePlus ditches HydrogenOS in favour of ColorOS for OnePlus 9 series in China

OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 9 series in China will run on ColorOS instead of the HydrogenOS. The OnePlus 9 series is set to launch on March 23 globally alongside the OnePlus Watch. The company has been teasing some key specifications of the upcoming phones and has confirmed that the ColorOS used by Oppo smartphones will run on the OnePlus 9 series.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took to Weibo to announce that the OnePlus 9 series will run on ColorOS 11 out-of-the-box. This is the first major development we’re hearing ever since the Research and Development (R&D) teams at OnePlus merged with Oppo, earlier this year. The OnePlus 9 series and the phones launched in China thereafter will run ColorOS while the global version of the phones will continue to run on OxygenOS out-of-the-box.

“After listening to their feedback and voices, our China market devices will now be using a customized version of ColorOS, tailored specifically for OnePlus smartphones, starting with the upcoming OnePlus 9 series,” said Gary C, OxygenOS Product Lead at OnePlus writes in a post on OnePlus Forums.

OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 9 series in China will run on ColorOS instead of the HydrogenOS

The company has not exactly revealed the reason as to why its phones won’t run the same software everywhere, but it likely has to do with the user base of ColorOS which is more than the people using HydrogenOS in China. “We truly believe this customized new operating system will bring our Chinese users a software experience that is better suited to their liking,” Gary adds.

For OnePlus users outside of mainland China, OnePlus smartphones will continue to run OxygenOS and the development will continue normally. We know that OnePlus anyway uses Oppo’s supply chain resources to manufacture its phones, but this new announcement further blurs the line between OnePlus and Oppo.

OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro, OnePlus 9R and OnePlus Watch are confirmed to launch on March 23 and here’s everything we know about it so far.

OnePlus 9R to feature gaming triggers, hints teaser ahead of March 23 India launch

OnePlus is all set to launch its upcoming OnePlus 9 series of phones in India later this week. The series has already been confirmed to bring with itself three new phones, the OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9R. These phones will be spread across slightly different price points and will look to target the upper and premium end of the mid-range segment.

Ahead of the March 23 launch, OnePlus has teased the OnePlus 9R, hinting that the device could be a gaming first smartphone that may even sport dedicated gaming triggers. The information has been teased by OnePlus India, which teased a picture of a silhouette of the 9R 5G, and while it doesn't reveal the phone in its entirety, you can clearly see its right side frame is home to the power button. The smartphone also appears to have two gaming triggers attached to it. That's because OnePlus is focusing on mobile gaming with the 9R 5G.

For now, there's no clarity if the gaming triggers will be the only gaming accessories that will be available on the OnePlus 9R, or if there will be a few other features also for enhancing the gaming experience on the phone.

OnePlus 9R rumoured specifications

As for the specifications, the OnePlus 9R is expected to feature a 6.5-inch Full HD+ display with support for a 90Hz high-refresh-rate. The phone is rumoured to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 processor under the hood and will likely run on Android 11 based OxygenOS out-of-the-box. Currently, there's little else known about the phone, but information about the device is expected to be revealed in the lead up to the launch of the phone, and eventually on the launch day of the device.

Twitter is testing an undo tweet feature, but it may be limited to paid users

One of the most requested Twitter features of all time is the ability to edit tweets. It would be nice to have the flexibility to edit out typos and mistakes in tweets instead of having to reply with the correction in the thread. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had, however, confirmed once in the past that it may never happen because they don't want users to alter the tweets and opinions once they get amplified or critiqued. The uneditable nature of posts remains an integral aspect of the platform, according to him.

But instead of that, it looks Twitter may soon let you undo tweets within a set period of time after sending them out. According to Jane Manchun Wong, a user who uncovers hidden and upcoming Twitter features, the company is currently testing this feature. Here's a screenshot that shows the feature -

Undo tweet is obviously not the same as the ability to edit tweets, but it's a neat feature to have nonetheless. It will allow you to stop the tweet from going out before your followers get to see it on their timeline. This is definitely better than deleting your tweets because a lot of users tend to see it anyway if they are online refreshing their feeds or have your tweet notifications turned on.

Twitter now testing an undo feature on the platform

It is also worth pointing out that this could very well be a paid feature. Yes, Twitter also seems to be testing a subscription model for veteran users who want to have these features at their disposal. Twitter doesn't have any subscription model as of now and the platform is completely free to use. That could change soon as the company explores new ways to monetize the platform.

We expect Twitter to remain free for all users, but we might end up seeing a lot of highly requested features under this paywall for interested users. We already see a lot of influencers and users with a huge following paying for this feature that lets you undo tweets.

It will be interesting to see the kind of features Twitter will reserve for paid users. These features might spill over to others without a subscription too, but this seems like a solid way to monetize the platform for now.
