tvOS 145 beta code hints at a new Apple TV model with support for 120Hz

9to5Mac has found reference to 120Hz support in the tvOS 14.5 beta code hinting that a new Apple TV with support for faster refresh rate could be in the works. A new Apple TV device has been rumoured for some time now. The 4K Apple TV launched back in 2017 and while it is still a great device for those looking to stream in 4K and HDR, Apple is long overdue to upgrade the Apple TV.

According to the source, “Multiple references to “120Hz” and “supports120Hz” have been added to tvOS’ PineBoard in the latest beta release. For those unfamiliar with the matter, PineBoard is the internal name of the system that controls the Apple TV interface, similar to the SpringBoard on iPhone and iPad. These references strongly suggest that Apple is at least internally testing a 120Hz mode for Apple TV”.

The currently available Apple TV 4K has an HDMI 2.0 port which means it is limited to 4K at 60Hz. To run 4K at 120Hz the device needs to have an HDMI 2.1 port along with an HDMI 2.1 cable. The TV also needs to support HDMI 2.1 like the LG GX we reviewed some time ago.

How can 120Hz benefit the Apple TV?

Well for starters, one can expect to see a very smooth UI, thanks to the faster refresh rate, if applicable to the UI. Another avenue where the device can benefit is gaming. Considering the power of Apple’s inhouse chipset powering the iPhone, iPad and even the new M1 chip powering the Mac, it’s easy to think that some of Apple’s games could run at a smooth 120FPS on the new Apple TV if the hardware were to support it.

Apple recently added a bunch of games to its subscription platform, Apple Arcade and gaming on the big screen using an Apple TV could add another level of competition to the recently launched next-gen consoles - the PS5 (review) and the Xbox Series X (review).

Apple's annual developer conference, WWDC, kicks off in June. You can learn more about WWDC 2021 here.

This isnt the first time we have heard rumours of a new Apple TV. Rumours of a refreshed Apple TV date back to 2019.

LG says it will continue to provide software updates to some of its phones even after shutting down the business

It's been quite a low-spirited day as LG announced the troubling news of shutting down its smartphone business. It essentially means we won't see any new LG phones in the future. The company wasn't flourishing with its phones, but they've given us really good phones over the years. For instance, here's a list of some of the most iconic LG phones we've seen over the years.

While the company won't be making any new phones in the future, it hasn't entirely ditched its existing devices. The company has confirmed that it will continue providing software updates to its phones and that these updates will vary by region.

Some LG phones might even receive the Android 12 update.

According to LG, the Android 11 update is currently in progress for select models. In fact, the company says some phones will also be upgraded to Android 12, however, the OS update plans will depend on Google's distribution schedule, product performance, and more. Additionally, LG also plans to continue providing security updates to its phones but it can change that policy at any time in the future, depending on the circumstances.

So from what it looks like, LG wants to keep supporting its existing devices but the plans seem to be uncertain at this point. If you are one of those who bought any of the newer LG phones, then you may or may not receive the Android 12 update. We won't be surprised to see other updates getting delayed too.

Also, just to be clear, LG doesn't have a good track record for providing timely software updates, to begin with, so you can expect the update schedules to become more uncertain going forward.

As we mentioned earlier, LG did make some really good phones and it's sad to see them calling it quits. That being said, the software update situation has always been a matter of concern for LG and we don't see it getting better anytime soon. We're glad that LG hasn't officially given up on existing devices though. At least, not yet.

Over 500 million Facebook users data has been leaked online, report says

Facebook has a poor track record when it comes to online privacy and securing users' data. The company somehow finds itself in the online privacy debacle which is also why it's not the go-to social media platform for a lot of people. Now, Facebook is once again in the news as a user found personal data of over 500 million Facebook users in a hacking forum.

According to Insider, the user data found on the forum matched known Facebook user's records. It seems to include phone numbers, birth dates, biographical details, and more. The source claims that the data includes personal information of over 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries, including over 32 million records on users in the US, 11 million on users in the UK, and 6 million on users in India.

All 533,000,000 Facebook records were just leaked for free. This means that if you have a Facebook account, it is extremely likely the phone number used for the account was leaked. I have yet to see Facebook acknowledging this absolute negligence of your data. https://t.co/ysGCPZm5U3 pic.twitter.com/nM0Fu4GDY8

— Alon Gal (Under the Breach) (@UnderTheBreach) April 3, 2021

Insider says it also verified records by testing email addresses from the data set in Facebook's password reset feature that partially revealed the users' phone numbers.

Facebook responded back to Insider with respect to this issue and said the data was scrapped due to a vulnerability that the company patched in 2019. Even though the data is a couple of years old now, it may still provide sensitive information about the users to someone who's got their hands on it.

Alon Gal, CTO of cybercrime intelligence firm Hudson Rock, first discovered the entire trough of leaked data online. "A database of that size containing the private information such as phone numbers of a lot of Facebook's users would certainly lead to bad actors taking advantage of the data to perform social engineering attacks [or] hacking attempts," he said.

Gal first discovered the leak in January when some user advertised an automated bot that could provide phone numbers of millions of Facebook users in a hacking forum. It was confirmed by multiple sources that the data set was legitimate. Now, the entire data set has been posted online for free, making it widely available.

This isn't the first time for Facebook and looking at how things are going, it doesn't look like it'll be the last one. We hope Facebook manages to get a hold of their platform and keep these security breaches at bay tp keep their users and their data safe. In the meantime, if you are worried about your data, then here's a quick guide to help you delete your Facebook account.
