Sony planning to release PlayStation Now in India, a Game Pass like subscription service: Report

Sony’s PlayStation Now subscription service is actually older than Xbox Game Pass but doesn’t have the same level of excitement surrounding it as it is available in limited markets, and unlike Game Pass, doesn’t get new PlayStation games on launch day.

A report from IGN India suggests that Sony was planning on introducing PlayStation Now back in 2020 but the plans were put on hold due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The report says, “According to several sources at Sony familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified discussing private information, the company is mulling an India release for PS Now after plans were put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic last year.”

The report goes on to say, “In addition to this, it’s looking at ways to increase awareness around its Play At Home and PlayStation Plus Collection for PS5 initiatives.”

What is PlayStation Now?

PlayStation Now is Sony's subscription-based game streaming service. It launched back in 2014 in North America and over the years has released in a few other markets. To put things into perspective, Microsoft launched Xbox Game Pass back in 2017.

PlayStation Now has a catalogue of more than 300 games. The service allows its members to stream PS2, PS3 and PS4 games to a user's PS4, PS5 (review) or PC. Sony later added the ability to download PS2 and PS4 games on a PS4 or PS5 so users don't need to rely on the internet to “stream” the game.

While PS Now predates Game Pass, the latter has gained a lot of positive traction as Microsoft makes its exclusive games available to players on launch day.  Xbox has also partnered with EA to offer EA Play as a part of Game Pass Ultimate. While PS Now has a bunch of Sony exclusives, it doesn’t have the same launch day availability for new AAA exclusive games.

With the launch of the PS5, Sony introduced the PlayStation Collection, a curation of select first-party and third-party games players would get access to along with their PlayStation Plus subscription. This list comprised 20 games.

Sony also introduced its Play at Home initiative offering a bunch of indie and VR games for free for PS4 and PS5 gamers.

Sony launched the PS5 back in February in India and the console sold out the minute the first pre-orders went live. Gamers are waiting for the console's availability in India and information circulating the internet suggests that we could see the PS5 back in stock in India in April 2021.

Apple iPad Pro with mini-LED display has been doing the rounds of the Internet for quite some time now. Several reports in the past have tipped that the Cupertino giant is eyeing late April for the launch of its next generation of iPad and iPad Pro. As per the latest report by Bloomberg, Apple’s mini-LED suppliers have apparently run into production issues ahead of the rumoured launch.

The report cites people in the know of things who claim that the suppliers are facing “poor manufacturing yields” with one of the suppliers even having to pause the production due to the said issues. Having said that, the report reaffirms that Apple is still on track to launch two new iPad Pro tablets sometime in the second half of April.

The key players in supplying mini-LED display to Apple include Taiwan-based Ennostar Inc, Taiwan Surface Mounting Technology and General Interface Solution Holding, the report states.

The Mini-LED display is expected to offer better colours, improved contrasts, brighter imagery and will overall be an improvement over the previous generation iPad Pro. The Mini-LED display is expected to be featured on the top-end 12.9-inch model of the iPad Pro and if the production issues are taken into account, this variant could witness a deferred availability at launch.

That trend is expected to continue as Apple gears up to launch the next generation of iPad Pro which is rumoured for sometime later this month.

Apart from that, users can also have two apps open simultaneously, a music player on the smaller display and Google Maps on the larger main display.

Elon Musks Neuralink releases video of an actual monkey playing Pong using its mind

If you thought the future wasn’t getting here fast enough, think again. In a fascinating experiment, Neuralink, the computer-brain interface company, founded by eccentric billionaire Elon Musk, has now managed to get a monkey to play pong with its mind. Yes, you read that right. A monkey can now play video games using just its mind. According to the company, the monkey was able to send brain signals wirelessly through an implanted device. The fact that no wires were used in the signal transmission is a significant breakthrough.

The monkey was first taught to play Pong using a basic controller like a joystick. After the successful completion of a task, the monkey would be rewarded with a sweet treat. The scientists recorded the data transmitted by the brain of the monkey to pinpoint exactly which neurons were firing. The scientists then disconnected the joystick and used wireless communication to allow the monkey to play the game using just its thoughts. The researchers over at Neruralink aim to use this technology to allow disabled and paralysed users to communicate with the world using their thoughts.

What this means for the future is currently unknown but we could see a lot of commercial applications for this kind of technology. Imagine controlling robots of war using just your mind or using robots to complete difficult and dangerous tasks. The technology could even enable people with paralysis to walk again. Elon Musk seems to think so. You only need to check out his Twitter feed.

First @Neuralink product will enable someone with paralysis to use a smartphone with their mind faster than someone using thumbs
