SIIC at IIT-Kanpur is partnering with MSMEs to boost manufacturing of oxygen concentrators with Mission Bharat O2

TL;DR: If you are an MSME and can manufacture world class oxygen concentrators, get the help with sourcing, funding, distribution and certification by applying here: https://www.bharato2.in

Startups incubated by SIIC were instrumental in boosting domestic manufacturing to meet the demand for essential supplies to meet the pandemic, including masks that were manufactured on campus and an ICU ventilator developed by Noccarc. The full story of how to get things done in the middle of global restrictions and uncertainty, is in the book, The Ventilator Project written by Amitabha Bandyopadhyay and Srikant Sastri. When the pandemic broke out, there was an acute demand that was met within a few months. The team successfully accelerated the development of a world class ICU Ventilator, got it tested, negotiated tie ups with local MSMEs and began commercial shipments within 90 days. This was done using the same tools that all of us are using during the pandemic, WhatsApp and Zoom. Now the same team is taking a crack at another tough problem, using the same approaches.

This is a task force set up to meet the demand for oxygen through local manufacturing of oxygen concentrators and oxygen manufacturing plants. The task force is led by Prof. Amitabha Bandyopadhyay, Professor In-charge, Innovation & Incubation, IIT Kanpur, Srikant Sastri, Director, FIRST-IITK and Chairman, I3G Advisory Network, and Rahul Patel, Head of Strategic Initiatives, SIIC IIT Kanpur.

Prof. Bandyopadhyay says, “SIIC and IIT Kanpur have a  history of bracing themselves and delivering quality in times of need. We did it with the Noccarc ventilator; we will do it again with Mission Bharat O2. We urge young Indian innovators to show support  in large numbers once again.”

The idea is to get the dream team and the expertise of solving a problem under pressure, during a time of pandemic and do it again. There is not much scope for innovation when it comes to oxygen concentrators, so the focus this time around is to boost up the local manufacturing capacity through multiple partnerships with MSMEs across the country.

Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur, urges MSMEs to apply for the challenge saying, “IIT Kanpur carries a legacy of serving the nation in times of urgent need. When  the first wave of COVID-19 hit India SIIC incubated companies stepped up to deliver world-class  healthcare products. The products, developed locally, are a testament of India’s capability to innovate  at par with global standards. As we reel under the impact of the second wave in India, IIT Kanpur and  SIIC have decided to support more indigenous innovators, this time to address the oxygen crisis in the  country. I urge all eligible manufacturers to participate in Mission Bharat O2”.

The focus is very much on coming up with a permanent solution to meet India's oxygen demand. Srikant Sastri says, "India  needs to develop a strong base of locally-manufactured medical equipment. We cannot forever depend  on imports . With Mission Bharat O2, SIIC IIT Kanpur has taken a step towards solving the oxygen crisis  not just for the short-term, but long term also. We believe that the manufacturers we identify through  this Challenge will form India’s manufacturing nucleus.”

The full story of how the team managed to solve a seemingly insurmountable problem is covered in the May 2021 issue of Digit Magazine, along with interviews of the authors and the founders of the Pune based startup, Noccarc.

Sony PS5 available for pre-booking from May 17

Good news for PlayStation 5 fans! It seems like the elusive console might be available for pre-order next week. A user in a WhatsApp group informed us about a Sony Authorised dealer that posted a banner on their website. The banner claims that the Sony PlayStation 5 will be available for pre-order from May 17, 12PM onwards. While we can see the disc edition banner there is a screenshot of the digital edition as well making the rounds on social media going up for preorder on the same date - May 17, 12PM. Do note that the disc edition is priced at Rs 49,990 and the digital edition is priced at Rs 39,990.

To recall, the sale of the PlayStation 5 is staggered, to say the least. Not only did the console arrive late, but its sale dates could be best summarized as first-come, first-served. Very recently, the console went on sale on Reliance Digital, but it went out of stock within a few minutes. It also seems like the issue of low stocks isn’t doing to go away anytime soon.

According to Sony, the shortage of console units isn't going to end unless the demand declines. With demand for the consoles at a fever-pitch, that isn’t going to change anytime soon. While speaking to investors, Sony CFO, Hiroki Totoki confirmed that it was challenging to keep up with the strong demand. He noted that in addition to the global semiconductor shortage, there are "other factors" contributing to the scarcity. Totoki didn't dive deep into the details about these other factors that are in play, but we are assuming one of them may be the global shipping crisis right now due to the pandemic.

Of course, Sony isn’t the only one struggling to meet the demands of gamers. Even Microsoft is having trouble keeping enough stocks of the Xbox Series X and the Series S. The lack of units isn;t just affecting console gamers, AMD and Nvidia are also having issues keeping up with demand. With everyone stuck at home during the pandemic, it seems like everyone turned to gaming to pass the time

Till then you can check out our reviews of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Nvidia announces RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti for laptops, turning mainstream notebooks into gaming powerhouses

Nvidia's new RTX 30-series GPUs are already powering millions of laptops around the world, delivering solid gaming performance for consumers on the go. Now, the RTX 30-series has two new members - The GeForce RTX 3050 Ti and 3050.

These new GPUs will be powering a new wave of mainstream laptops on the market, turning them into very capable gaming machines. They will deliver real-time ray tracing and AI-based DLSS and make them available to a wider range of consumers.

The new RTX 3050 Ti and the RTX 3050, as you've probably already guessed, sit beneath the existing RTX 3060 when it comes to performance and specs. They both have less video memory (4GB) and fewer dedicated tensor cores compared to the RTX 3060. However, they do have RT Cores for real-time ray tracing and DLSS.

According to Nvidia, the RTX 3050 Ti is capable of pushing beyond the 60 FPS mark in more modern titles like Call Of Duty: Warzone, Outriders, Control, Watch Dogs: Legion, and Minecraft. This is with ray-tracing turned on, so that's quite impressive. After all, you'll be seeing these GPUs in more mainstream machines rather than high-end, dedicated gaming laptops.

While we haven't tested any of these laptops since they are yet to go official. That being said, we doubt if these laptops will be able to handle those games with ray-tracing at max settings and offer the best visual fidelity. Considering the fact that these GPUs are less powerful than the RTX 3060, we think it will be suited for consumers who prefer to have smooth gameplay over max visual fidelity.

Nvidia is betting big on the DLSS feature that will use AI cores to run games at better frame rates on these laptops. However, it will be interesting to see how the games that don't support DLSS will run on these systems.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that OEMs are free to tweak the total graphics power (TGP) of each RTX 3050 or RTX 3050 Ti in terms of wattage and clock speed just like how they can with other RTX 30-series based laptops. The TGP range for these chips can be anywhere between 35W and 80W.

Availability

In terms of availability, you can expect laptops with the RTX 3050 Ti and RTX 3050 to show up on the market very soon. Samsung has already launched the Galaxy Book Odyssey with RTX 3050, so it's only a matter of time till we start seeing new laptops powered by these new GPUs.
