Whatsapp will not restrict features for Indian users who dont accept new privacy policy

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) recently directed WhatsApp to backtrack its controversial privacy policy that went into effect on May 15. In response to MeitY’s letter, WhatsApp has now assured that it will not restrict services and features for users who do not accept its latest privacy policy. At least, not for now.

"We have responded to the Government of India's letter and assured them that the privacy of users remains our highest priority. We will not limit the functionality of how WhatsApp works in the coming weeks. Instead, we will continue to remind users from time to time about the update," said a WhatsApp spokesperson in a statement given to Reuters.

WhatsApp will stick to the May 15 deadline for users in India to accept new terms of service, but it will not immediately restrict features like messaging and calling for users who do not accept the new terms. Such users will, however, get repeated prompts while using the messenger until they accept the new policy. The Facebook-owned messaging platform plans to follow this approach till the Personal Data Protection laws come into effect.

What's controversial about WhatsApp's Privacy terms?

WhatsApp’s new privacy policy, which was first put forth in January,  makes it mandatory for users to share their data with Facebook if they wish to continue using the service. According to the new terms, conversations with businesses can be used for marketing purposes. This collected data will also be shared with other Facebook services like Instagram irrespective of whether they use them. The concerns also stem from Facebook’s irresponsible track record when it comes to user privacy and handling user data.

In its letter to WhatsApp, MeitY delineated the new privacy policy as “discriminatory, unfair, and irresponsible.”

The policy terms aren’t the same worldwide. Users in Europe and U.K, for instance, won’t have to accede to the same data-sharing terms. Whatsapp is currently facing staunch resistance with its new privacy terms across several countries.

Carl Peis Twitter hacked by scammers, tried to get people to buy Nothing Coin with ETH

Celebrity account hacks are getting dreadfully common, and the latest personality to take a hit is OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei. Moving on from OnePlus, Carl Pei founded ‘Nothing’, a consumer tech company that will soon launch its first product, the Ear 1 TWS buds, in June next month.

Today, a fishy tweet posted from his account announced ‘Nothing’ venturing into cryptocurrency space with "Nothing Coin" that is supposedly "built on the ETH ERC-20 chain." Hackers impersonating Pei asked interested followers to participate by transferring their Ethereum Coins to a wallet address.

Pei has also confirmed to Engadget Senior Editor Richar Lei that the tweet was posted after his account was hacked. The tweet that has since been pulled down was likely injected through an IFTTT hack. Which is another reason why users need to be extra vigilant while granting IFTTT permission to third-party apps.

In fact, this isn’t the first request from Carl Pei’s Twitter handle for followers to pitch in - which could have perhaps made the hack sound credible to gullible followers. London-headquartered Nothing earlier allowed people to invest $1.5 million in the company through a community equity round at the same valuation as in the Series A funding round. The brand already has the backing of several prominent investors including Kunal Shah of CRED, Youtuber, Casey Neistat, the Co-Founder of Twitch - Kevin Lin and many others.

Of course, this is not the only instance of a celebrity account being hacked. Other popular names to recently join the list include PM Narendra Modi, Amitab Bachchan, Jeff Bezos, Barack Obama, Michel Bloomberg, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, Elon Musk, and Kim Kardashian.
