The Alienware X15 launched with Intel H-series CPUs and RTX 30-series graphics

Alienware's laptops are known for their hardcore focus on gaming and performance. As such, the company usually steers clear of the thin-and-light category where performance is usually compromised in order to save weight and reduce thickness. However, it looks like things are now changing with the announcement of the Alienware X15.

Alienware X15

Alienware X15

We will be seeing two configurations of the X15, both of which are just 15.9mm thick. That's thin by Alienware's standard as pretty much all the Alienware laptops so far measure around 20mm in thickness. The Alienware m15, for instance, measures 20.1mm.

Despite the relatively thin build, it seems like the laptop will still be a very capable machine. The laptop can be configured with up to an IntelCore i9-11900H processor, an RTX 3080 GPU configured with 110W max graphics power, up to 32GB RAM, and a 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD with a maximum of 4TB of dual storage supported via RAID 0.

For display, you can either configure it to come with a 15.6-inch FHD panel with a 165Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, and up to 300 nits of brightness, or go all in and get a 400-nit QHD G-Sync panel with a 240Hz refresh rate, 2ms response time, and 99% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

The Alienware X15 packs an 87Whr battery and it can weigh up to 2.3Kgs depending on the specs. That's not too bad for an Alienware machine, and it's good to see the company putting in efforts to make a thin gaming laptop. We just hope Alienware’s Quad Fan and the new “Element 31 thermal interface material” will help keep the thermals in check.

Alienware X17

Alienware X17

If you don't mind using a thicker laptop, then there's Alienware x17 for you. You get a 17.3-inch screen that can be configured to have a 500-nit 4K display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 4ms response time. For the processor, you can go up to an Intel Core i9-11900HK with up to 64GB of XMP RAM clocked at 3,466MHz.

GPU options with this laptop can be configured to have higher max graphics power due to the bigger chassis. For instance, even an RTX 3060 on this laptop can have 130W max graphics power instead of 90W on the X15 laptop. You can configure the X17 with an RTX 3080 with 16GB VRAM and 165W max graphics power at a boost clock speed of 1,710MHz.

Both laptops will have a 720p Windows Hello compatible webcam and Alienware's X-series keyboard with per-key RGB lighting. The X17 can be purchased with Alienware's Cherry MX ultra-low-profile mechanical switches. Last, but not least, both machines will be available in the “Lunar Light” colorway which looks pretty neat from what we have seen so far.

Pricing & Availability

Alienware has launched both laptops in the US and they are now available to buy. The Alienware X15 starts at $1,999 for the base model, which roughly translates to about Rs 1.46 lakh. The Alienware X17 will cost you $2,099 for the base variant which is about Rs 1.58 lakhs. The prices will, of course, go up from there depending on the configuration. As of now, there's no word about the availability of these laptops in the Indian market, but we'll keep you posted about the same.

Samsungs upcoming flagship Exynos chip to feature AMD RDNA 2 graphics with variable-rate shading & raytracing

AMD has partnered with Samsung to bring the RDNA 2 graphics architecture to boost mobile gaming. During the Computex 2021 keynote session, AMD announced that it has inked partnerships with Samsung and Tesla to bring new gaming experiences to mobile and automotive products. With Samsung, AMD is working on the next-generation flagship Exynos SoC that aims to bring raytracing and variable rate shading to smartphones. It should be noted that AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture is also featured on the latest consoles, namely the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

“AMD has partnered with industry leader Samsung for several years to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market and we’re happy to announce that we will bring custom graphics IP to Samsung’s next flagship SoC with raytracing and variable rate shading capabilities,” said AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su during the keynote address.

Samsung Exynos 2200 could feature RDNA 2 based GPU

AMD did not delve too deep into its partnership with Samsung and we know that the upcoming Exynos SoC will feature AMD RDNA 2 architecture-based IP that will enhance the overall mobile gaming experience. Samsung and AMD first announced their multi-year deal back in June 2019, noting that AMD GPU-based smartphones were still two years away. This year, it seems Samsung will get the ball rolling and we may finally get to see the first phone getting AMD’s RDNA 2-based GPU either by the end of the year or early 2022.

As per the latest reports, Samsung could be working on launching three new chipsets in 2021. These could include a mid-range 800 series SoC, a 1200 series SoC and a flagship 2200 series chip. The Exynos 2200 is said to be the follow-up to the Exynos 2100 SoC that powers the Galaxy S21 flagship. The Exynos 2200 is rumoured to outperform the Apple A14 Bionic chipset by a huge margin and said to deliver over 25% better CPU performance over the last generation.

With its partnership with AMD, Samsung is looking to boost the GPU performance on its smartphones and tip the scales in its favour. We are also seeing a shift in how game developers are approaching mobile gaming and many AAA titles are slated to launch for Android and iOS smartphones in 2021. Samsung will reveal more details about its upcoming flagship Exynos chip later this year.

Apart from Samsung, AMD has also partnered with Tesla for the Tesla Model S and Model X refresh. The new infotainment systems in these cars are powered by the AMD Ryzen APU and RDNA 2 architecture-based GPU that brings in AAA gaming.

Computex 2021: AMD announces RDNA2-based Radeon RX6000M, Radeon 5000G for retail, and more

AMD made a ton of unveilings at the ongoing virtual Computex 2021 trade show. Among these was the announcement that the company was bringing its RDNA2 GPUs to laptops, and even mobile phones. Other than that, AMD talked about AMD Ryzen 5000G APUs being available to retail users, its new FidelityFX Super Resolution game upscaling technology and its new AMD Design Framework Initiative where it will directly collaborate with OEMs for ‘AMD Advantage’ branded products.

AMD Radeon RX6000M

AMD has been conspicuously missing when it comes to Laptop GPUs. The market is dominated by NVIDIA and even Intel’s upgraded Iris Xe graphics had a lead over AMD’s Vega generation. This generation, AMD will be in a much better position to compete.

The long-awaited Radeon RX6000M graphics adaptors for laptops are based on the company’s power-efficient RDNA2 architecture. This is the same architecture used in the RX6000 desktop graphics cards. AMD is releasing three models under this range - the Radeon RX 6800M, 6700M, and 6600M. This will cover mid-range and high-end gaming segments.

The 40-core Radeon RX 6800M, which can be considered a mobile version of RX 6700 XT, is the highest clocked laptop GPU as of today and is being pitched as a fit for 1440p gaming. It will go up against NVIDIA RTX 3080.

The 36-core Radeon RX 6700M is aimed at 1440p and 1080p gaming. It doesn’t compromise much in terms of performance and has a slightly lower TGP as compared to Radeon RX6800M.

The third in line is the 28-core Radeon RX 6600M that AMD is pitching for 1080p gaming.

AMD RDNA2 GPU coming to Exynos 2200

AMD and Samsung are partnering to bring RDNA2 GPUs to the Exynos 2200 SoC or the next year's flagship Exynos chipset. This could give Samsung a competing edge against Qualcomm’s Adreno GPUs that are deemed superior to existing ARM Mali GPUs. AMD didn’t talk details, but Samsung will be talking about the SoC at a separate event later.

“AMD has partnered with industry leader Samsung for several years to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market, and we are happy to announce that we will bring custom graphics IP (Intellectual Property) to Samsung’s next flagship mobile SoC (System on Chip) with ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities,” said AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su at Computex 2021 event.

AMD Ryzen 5000G APUs are coming to the retail market

AMD announced its Ryzen 5000G processors with the latest Zen3 cores and integrated Radeon Vega graphics back in April, but only for the pre-built market. Today, AMD has announced that two of the six Ryzen 5000G APUs - Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 5 5600G - will be available in retail markets starting August 5.

Both of these APUs have 65W TDP, 24 PCIe 3.0 lanes, and support DDR4-3200 memory. The Ryzen 7 5700G with 8 cores and 16 threads will cost $359 (approximately Rs 26,100 when directly converted). It has a base frequency of 3.8GHz, a single-core turbo frequency of 4.6GHz, and includes 8 Radeon Vega GPU cores at 2GHz.

The Ryzen 5 5600G with 6 cores and 12 threads has been priced at $259 (approx Rs 18,800 when directly converted). The processor has a base frequency of 3.9 GHz, a single-core turbo frequency of 4.4GHz and includes 7 Radeon Vega GPU cores at 1900MHz.

Apart from Ryzen 5000G APUs, AMD also added a few Ryzen Pro Desktop processors to its portfolio. These include Ryzen 7 Pro 5750G, Ryzen 7 Pro 5750GE,  Ryzen 5 Pro 5650G, Ryzen 5 Pro 5650GE.

FidelityFX Super Resolution technology (FSR)

AMD also finally unveiled their FidelityFX Super Resolution game upscaling technology, which is an answer to NVIDIA’s very popular DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). DLSS allows NVIDIA GPUs to render games at low resolution and then upscale them on high-resolution TVs and Monitors without a significant hit in quality.

NVIDIA is well ahead in the race with DLSS 2.0 and AMD will have some catching up to do. FideligtyFX Super Resolution technology or FSR will be open source and free for developers to use. It doesn’t require any deep learning hardware and will be supported on most AMD and NVIDIA PC and laptop graphics cards from the start. AMD will reveal more technical details when it launches FSR on June 22.

AMD Design Framework Initiative

AMD Design Framework Initiative is a program that will let OEMs directly collaborate with AMD while designing their products, the same way as intel does with key Notebook OEMs. The initiative will include AMD being involved in key decision-making like picking the right CPUs, displays, storage, discrete graphics, and other optimizations for optimal performance.

The products thus built will be branded under the ‘AMD Advantage’ logo and will start showing up as early as June 2021.

As part of this, OnePlus India has shared a new teaser through its website that reveals the phone will come with a "sleek and streamlined" design. But that's not it. Amazon has also revealed key details about the phone, including its RAM, storage, and colour options. This information was revealed by the company as part of its daily Amazon Quiz promotion.

As per the quiz, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G will be offered in an 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage variant. However, speculation suggests that this is only one of the variants and that there could be other variants as well. While there is no confirmation about this, the expectation is that the top-end OnePlus Nord CE 5G is likely to offer 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The quiz also revealed that the OnePlus smartphone will be offered in a Charcoal Ink colour.

The OnePlus Nord CE is a follow-up to the original Nord that was launched in July last year. Ahead of the launch, some details about the phone have emerged online. According to a report by Android Central that cites insider sources, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor, which we have seen on phones such as the Mi 10i, Motorola Moto G 5G, and more. It is also possible that the Nord CE could be priced a bit lower than the original Nord, which started at Rs 24,999.

Further, the report states that the OnePlus Nord CE 5G features the same display as the original Nord. It is a 6.43-inch AMOLED display with support for a 90Hz refresh rate. As for the cameras, the phone will have a triple-camera stack that is headlined by a 64MP camera. For selfies, the device is tipped sport a 16MP unit. The sources also suggest that the design of the phone will be refreshed to make it more in line with the OnePlus 9 series, especially that vertical camera housing.
