Battlegrounds Mobile India gets 20 million pre-registrations in 2 weeks

We knew that the anticipation for Battlegrounds Mobile India (formerly known as PUBG Mobile India) was high, but now Krafton has put a number on it. The developer has announced that the game has received 20 million pre-registrations in two weeks. In fact, it was noted that the game got 7.6 million pre-registrations on its opening day alone. By comparison, another highly anticipated mobile game, FAU-G (review) received just over a million votes within 24 hours of pre-registration.

CH Kim, CEO of Krafton Inc. stated, “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our Indian fans for their overwhelming response to the BATTLEGROUNDS IP first developed by me and my team in 2017. The BATTLEGROUNDS IP received love and acclaim from players worldwide, and KRAFTON will continue to build on the IP. That effort includes bringing amazing content to BATTLEGROUNDS MOBILE INDIA and providing an incomparable battle royale experience to our players”.

Battlegrounds Mobile India: Pre-Registration details

Battlegrounds Mobile India pre-registration went live on May 18 on Android. Almost on cue, the Google Play Store was flooded with imitators. These imitators ranged from fake guides, or cheap palette-swapped games. You can click here to check out the official listing of the game.

As an added bonus, those who pre-register for the game can claim a bunch of in-game rewards. These include the Recon Mask, Recon outfit, Celebration Expert Title, and 300 AG. These can be claimed once the game goes live.

Krafton Inc still hasn’t confirmed a release date for the game yet. However, Notable esports players and streamers have hinted that the game will launch sometime later this month.  Abhijeet ‘Ghatak’ Andhare had hinted that the Battlegrounds Mobile India will launch in the third week of June. Soon after, Sagar ‘Maxtern’ Thakur posted a cryptic tweet in binary. When converted to decimal it gives ‘18062021’, suggesting the date to be June 18. Of course, since none of this is official, it should be taken with a pinch of salt.

God of War sequel delayed to 2022, will be playable on PS4 and PS5

The Sequel to 2018’s God of War has been delayed to 2022. The information comes from the official PlayStation Blog’s Q&A with Head of PlayStation Studios, Hermen Hulst. Hults elaborates on the challenges developers are facing due to the ongoing pandemic and work from home situation adopted by developers. The biggest work that has been affected is “performance capture, and audio work”.

Hults says, “But when you’re doing performance capture for a lot of cinematics, with multiple actors — that’s not so simple to solve. So you’ve got a choice. You could do it later in the schedule, which could cause you problems. Or you could risk the final quality by doing it in a different way. But I can tell you, we’re not going to risk the quality. We want to ship extremely high quality games, finished games, and we have to do that obviously without pushing our teams to the breaking point”.

Hults says that both Horizon Forbidden West and God of War sequel have been affected “by access to performance capture and talent”. However, he does confirm that Horizon is on track for a 2021 release and because God of War production started a little late, the game has been delayed to 2022.

God of War Sequel confirmed to release on PS4 and PS5

In the same blog post, Hults also confirmed that the sequel to 2018’s God of War will release on the PS4 and PS5 (review). He says, “Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 — for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 — we’ll continue looking at that. And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can. If they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them”.

It was already confirmed that Horizon Forbidden West will release for both PS4 and PS5 and it looks like the same has been confirmed for GT7 in addition to the next God of War game.

While Spider-Man Miles Morales (review) is a great example of a cross-gen game between the PS4 and PS5, it still remains to be seen how cut down the PS4 versions of God of War and Horizon Forbidden West are when they release. One thing is for sure, we can count on Sony not to pull a Cyberpunk 2077.

Garena Free Fire World Series 2020 breaks record of Peak Live Viewers for an esports event

Garena has announced that the Free Fire World Series has broken the record for Peak Live Viewers for an esports event. The event was watched by 5.4 million people, thereby breaking the record held by the 2019 League of Legend World Championship. The numbers were confirmed by Esports Charts, a first dedicated to collecting all statistics about esports and streaming.

Free Fire World Series: Statistics

According to Esports Charts, Free Fire World Series 2020 managed to pull in exactly 5,414,953 Peak Live Viewers. By comparison, the 2019 League of Legends World Championship managed to pull in 3,985,787 viewers. One should also note that FFWS 2020 had airtime of 9 hours while the 2019 LoL World Championship had an airtime of 131 hours.

The 2019 Free Fire World Series also broke another record. That of the Peak Live Viewers on a single stream. The Hindi broadcast stream of the tournament had 1.9 million Peak Live Viewers. This is especially surprising as Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi teams were not able to partake in the tournament due to travel restrictions put in place by the Singapore Government.

Interestingly, India was also the second most popular region. eSports Charts notes that Hindi viewers contributed 22.5% to the total Hours Watched. Further, the Hindi broadcast managed to collect 50 million views. It also noted that India’s views could have been higher. But the region’s time zone made it difficult. Peak views for Hindi were achieved around the first rounds, however, this audience decreased towards the end of the competition as the final was held almost at midnight in India.
