iPhone 14 line-up could feature 120HZ, LTPO displays along with other changes

With the launch of the Apple iPhone 13 looming large, we’ve got some news on the iPhone 14. It looks like Apple could be implementing 120Hz displays across the entire iPhone 14 lineup. A report published on The Elec stated that LG Display is looking at starting production on LTPO OLED displays (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) which will then be featured on the iPhone 14. While this may be good news, the iPhone 13 Pro models will be the only ones that come with a 120HZ display. The report also goes on to state that LG Display is in discussions with Avaco to procure LTPO manufacturing machinery.

Apple iPhone 12 specs

Just a few weeks ago we reported that Apple was looking at adding an ultrawide lens on the iPhone 13 Pro. With the iPhone 14, once LG gets the official nod from Apple, final orders will then take place. Again, this is just a rumour as nothing has been officially announced by Apple or Samsung as yet. The upcoming iPhone 13 Po will feature Samsung LTPO displays while the base variants will all feature TFT OLED displays from LG.

The iPhone 14 is also rumoured to come with an in-display fingerprint sensor. A new 6.7 variant is also said to coming as well. As of now, Apple has not mentioned anything to the press as we’re sure the company is looking forward to the launch of the iPhone 13, later this year.

Nintendo announces new Switch OLED model Heres whats new

On Nintendo, you’re the king of unorthodox announcements. The Japanese gaming giant has just announced the launch of the new Nintendo Switch model that comes with an OLED screen. For now, we’re calling it the Switch OLED, just to avoid confusion. The announcement was made via a tweet that we’ve embedded below and it is already up for pre-order on the official Nintendo website. Earlier, we reported that Nintendo was working on the “Switch Pro” but it looks like there are just a few minute changes to the console as a whole to really give it the Switch Pro tag.

Meet the newest entry to the #NintendoSwitch family! So, what’s really changed from the base Switch? Well, for one the new Switch OLED comes with a 7-inch OLED screen, an adjustable stand that looks to be a significant improvement over the flimsy stand on the original Switch. It also comes with a wired LAN port, 64 GB of storage and enhanced audio capabilities. While all of this is great and dandy, where’s the improved internals and hardware? We’re hoping that Nintendo isn’t hiding the Switch Pro somewhere, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting customers come the holidays. Oh, and it also comes in a white colour that is sure to be a stain machine over time.

Nintendo Switch OLED display

Let’s take a deeper look at what’s on offer on the Switch OLED model, shall we?

First off is the improved 7-inch OLED screen. So obviously the OG Switch didn’t have the best display out there with a multi-touch capacitive touch screen with a 720p resolution. Sure, it did the job but with the new OLED screen, at the very least, playing games portably will look much, much better.

The wide adjustable stand is also an upgrade over the flimsy toothpick of a stand on the OG Switch. From the image, you can clearly see that it had a wider base of support. But, without really putting it through the paces, we can’t tell if it is functionally better than the OG Switch’s stand.

The Switch OLED also comes with 64 GB of internal storage (cue the world’s weakest Hurray), so yeah, you can maybe store 6 more games on the Switch OLED. The addition of a wired LAN port is very confusing but Nintendo are always old-school with their consoles, and maybe it’s a Japanese thing.

The final addition seems to be enhanced audio from the onboard speakers. While this is a good upgrade, it really is only superficial as I have yet to meet anyone who plays their Switch without headphones on portable mode.

Nintendo Switch OLED Internal Storage and speakers

Look, as much as the new Switch OLED makes us feel, it really is just a superficial update. The promised internal upgrade hasn't been implemented so we’re stuck with 4-year-old hardware. And, even though games like Doom Eternal have been successfully ported over to the console, the Switch can’t go on for the next few years without a chip upgrade, at the very least. But, for now, the new Switch OLED is what we have.

Xiaomi and Redmi could launch new laptops in India soon, according to tipster

It looks like Xiaomi is planning on taking a step forward in the laptop market in India. The Chinese company released the Mi Notebook 14 series in India and is looking at expanding its portfolio in the laptop segment. According to tipster Ishan Agarwal, Xiaomi is looking at launching new Mi laptops and notebooks in India. He also goes on to state that Redmi is also planning to launch a product sometime this month. No other specifications were revealed but if the leak is true, then it will be the first time Redmi launches its laptop in the country.

Seems like Xiaomi will be launching new Mi Laptops/Notebooks soon in India! Redmi also has a launch lined up for this month. Excited for any? #Xiaomi #Mi

— Ishan Agarwal (@ishanagarwal24) July 5, 2021

Even though Redmi laptops have been available in China for a while now, the trend hasn't carried forward to India. But, it looks like that could change if the rumour is true. There isn't too much info to go on. There isn't any news on which models will be launched in India or even when. In fact, earlier in January, we reported that Xiaomi had launched its Mi Notebook 14 (IC) in India. The laptop was powered by an Intel Core i5-10210U Comet Lake processor and was priced at Rs 43,999.

We’re not sure of the specs of the Xiaomi or the Redmi laptop but if the rumours are true, we should be hearing more about them in the coming months. For now, the speculation is that we could see AMD powered laptops instead of the current Intel-powered machines in India. Again, this is all speculation for now. Xiaomi and Redmi have made any announcements yet.

Samsung could announce three new foldable smartphones on August 11

Just a few days ago, we received new renders of the Fold 3 from OnLeaks that give us a good look at what to expect from the upcoming successor to the Fold 2. Now, there are reports emerging that Samsung is looking to unveil three new foldable phones on 11 August. These three phones will all be foldable smartphones and are names accordingly-  Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 Lite. Just going by the name of the phone, we could expect the Lite variant to be priced differently than the other two. Nothing has been officially announced as yet, so do take this news with a grain of salt.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 renders

According to The Korea Herald, Samsung will host the Galaxy Unpacked event in Korea on 11 August. The event will be live-streamed from Seoul and will feature the announcement of the three new foldable phones. As we already know, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is thinner and lighter in comparison to the Fold 2. When folded, it measures 14.5 millimetres in thickness and 15.6 millimetres including the rear camera bump and when unfolded, Fold 3 has a thickness of just 6.6 millimetres which translates to 7.7 millimetres including the camera bump. The overall dimensions are 158.1 x 64.8 x 14.5mm (15.6mm including rear camera bump) when folded and roughly 158.1 x 128.1 x 6.6mm (7.7mm including rear camera bump) when unfolded.

The Flip3 however will come in a flip-phone style design and as we’ve said before, the Lite could be priced lower than the base Flip3. The report also speculated that the Flip3’s cover display could be expanded from 1.1 inches to 1.9 inches. As the year hits the midway point, we’re seeing Samsung take a more experimental approach to the launch of the Fold and Flip series of devices. We’ll only know more when the company finally announces the three phones in August.
