MediaTek Helio G96 & G88 SoC launched, brings display & photography capabilities to premium smartphones

MediaTek has announced two new additions to its Helio G series chips - the Helio G96 and Helio G88. While the Helio G96 and Helio G88 both are slightly better than the Helio G95 and the Helio G85 respectively, they're not strict upgrades that bring any substantial changes.

MediaTek Helio G96 SoC

MediaTek Helio G96

The Helio G96 features a pair of Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.05 GHz and six A55 cores. This, in case you don't know, is the same as the Helio G95. For GPU, the new Helio G96 brings a Mali-G57 MC2, which is more of a downgrade from the Mali-G76 MC4 from before.

In terms of upgrades, the Helio G96 will ensure premium everyday user experiences with its support for 120Hz displays with up to FullHD+ resolution. This will work for both LCD as well as OLED, which is great. The Helio G95 only supported 90 Hz @ 1080p+. The maximum camera resolution has also been increased to support the 108 MP sensors that are available on the market now. The video capture, however, is still capped at 4K @ 30FPS.

Other upgrades include support for UFS 2.2 storage, up from UFS 2.1 support on the previous one. You also get support for faster LTE (Cat 13 downlink) and a newer Bluetooth version 5.2.

MediaTek Helio G88 SoC

MediaTek Helio G88

Coming to the Helio G88, this is again very similar to its predecessor. You are looking at the same pair of Cortex-A75 cores running at 2.0 GHz along with the six A55 cores. The Mali-G52 MC2 GPU is also the same as the one seen on the Helio G85, running at 1Ghz frequency. Other things like RAM and storage support, and even the LTE modem have remained unchanged.

In terms of upgrades, the Helio G88 now supports 90Hz displays at up to 1080p+ resolution, up from the capped 90Hz @720+ support on the Helio G85. Also, the main camera on the devices powered by the Helio G88 can now have a 64MP sensor, up from 48MP. Other new camera processing tricks include 3DNR and MFNR noise reduction in hardware.

Both the Helio G96 and the Helio G88 have also been upgraded to HyperEngine 2.0 Lite and support for Dual SIM operation with VoLTE.

In case you are wondering about the availability, these new chips will start making their way into the next generation of smartphones launching later this year.

PS5-inspired Xbox Series X and Series S controller redesign in the works, hints Chief Phil Spencer

Xbox Series X and Series S controller are almost identical in design and function to the older Xbox One gamepad, except for an addition of the Share button. Xbox Cheif, Phil Spencer touched upon this fact during a recent episode of Kinda Funny Gamescast. During the podcast, he hinted at an upcoming Xbox controller refresh and praised Sony for making the amazing PS5 Dual-sense gamepad.

Xbox Series S Series X Controller Refresh PS5 Dual Sense

Xbox Series X and Series S controller refresh happening soon

The inspiration for Xbox Series X and Series S controller refresh will most likely come from the PS5 dual sense. It is clear from the dual-sense reference Spencer made during the podcast and said “I think Sony's done a nice job with their controller, we kind of look at some of that and think, 'Are there things that we should go do?”

On top of that, in January, Xbox put out an official poll asking Series X and Series S owners what new features from the Dual-Sense controller they would like to see on an Xbox gamepad.

Additionally, Spencer also turned down speculations related to any upcoming Xbox exclusive VR device. He praised the Oculus Quest 2 VR device for providing a great virtual reality experience.

Microsoft Xbox future road plan

The Xbox is evolving as a brand. In 2021, it is less about what hardware you play games on and more about the massive library of games, cloud gaming and developing new IPs. Xbox’s acquisition of Bethesda was one of the biggest stories this year and certainly benefitted the consumers as well. Xbox added a massive library of Bethesda games to its popular and ever-expanding Game Pass and made some of the biggest titles of this generation including Starfield and potential Elder Scrolls 6, an Xbox and PC exclusive.

Furthermore, Microsoft also continues to develop new IPs with studios from around the world. In a recent interview, Spencer also hinted at the possibility of adding new game developers under the Xbox Games Studios banner from regions like India, Africa and South America in the near future.

Xbox also achieved a great feat when after years of struggling to find its place in India one of its latest consoles became the best-selling gaming console in the region. Phil Spencer is colloquially known as the man that brought Xbox from the dead and now maybe he will also be the man to dominate the ninth generation of gaming consoles.

Xiaomi Mi 12 leaked specifications suggest a flagship-killer with worlds first 200MP camera

The Xiaomi Mi 12 has leaked online along with the specs that show it to be a big flagship killer. Notebook check recently reported on the Xiaomi Mi 12 Ultra and now they have some information related to the regular base Xiaomi Mi 12 smartphone. The report claims that although Xiaomi Mi 12 and Mi 12 Ultra have different specs, ultimately, they’re similar in design. The leaked information gives us a clear look at the Xiaomi Mi 12 including its display, SoC and some other crucial information.

Xiaomi Mi 12 Specification Price In India Launch Date

Xiaomi Mi 12 Specifications, Features, Launch Date

Recently, a model code “211213AC” pertaining to a Xiaomi smartphone surfaced on the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) database, proving the existence of a Mi 12 smartphone. Notebook check references another report from MyDrivers that puts Xiaomi 12 as a flagship killer. In terms of specs, it will most likely feature the rumoured Qualcomm Snapdragon 895 processor. It is a top of the line SoC that hasn’t even been released yet. Furthermore, the report goes on to claim that Xiaomi Mi 12 will sport a 2k screen featuring an LTPO panel offering an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz.

Xiaomi Mi 12 will also feature amazing camera performance thanks to a 200MP 1-inch sensor, but experts believe that it stay reserved for the Mi 12 Ultra. Additionally, the Xiaomi Mi 12 will have support for 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

In terms of charging capabilities, sources claim that Xiaomi Mi 12 will at least have a 120W wired fast charging support. Wireless charging, however, will stay limited to 100W only. From its initial specs, Mi 12 seems like a flagship killer. But it’d all depend on Xiaomi and what pricing they ultimately choose for the Xiaomi Mi 12 and Mi 12 Ultra.

In recent times, Xiaomi devices have become expensive. Xiaomi’s latest and greatest, Mi 11 Ultra features top of the line specs but also costs Rs 69,999 in India. Considering that Mi 12 has even more ludicrous specs, I wouldn’t get my hopes up for budget pricing. Lastly, the Mi 12 could release before the end of December this year.
