Samsung can remotely disable its TVs acquired by unlawful means

Samsung has revealed that all its TVs come with a “Television Block” system preloaded that can be used to remotely disable them, should it detect that they have been acquired by “unlawful” means. The company says that the feature was activated on TVs that were stolen from its warehouse and from retails in South Africa amidst the looting and violence that ensued the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma last month.

“The aim of the technology is to mitigate against the creation of secondary markets linked to the sale of illegal goods, both in South Africa and beyond its borders,” Samsung said in its statement detailing the TV Block Function.

Samsung says that TV Block will “ensure that the television sets can only be used by the rightful owners with a valid proof of purchase.” The company didn’t specify if individuals will be able to report their stolen Samsung TVs to get them blocked as well.

How does Samsung’s Television Block work?

After a TV connects to the internet, Samsung’s servers can identify if the TV is stolen from its serial number. This implements the TV Block feature which disables all television functions.

Samsung can also remotely lift the block and restore the TV if the customer feels that he has been wrongly penalized and can share a valid proof of purchase. These can be shared at serv.manager@samsung.com and Samsung will try to provide a resolution within the next 48 hours.

Apple reportedly testing new FaceID hardware that works with masks

It is no secret that Apple is working on its iPhone 13 line-up of flagships which are expected to launch later this year. As is the case always, these will feature the best in technology that Apple has to offer, including improvements in hardware and supporting software. And according to a new report, one of these changes this year could be new Face ID hardware for the iPhone 13 lineup that will reportedly work with face masks and even foggy glasses.

The report claims that this new facial recognition technology has also forced Apple to make some design changes, impacting not only the size of the notch but also the positioning of the selfie camera. Coming courtesy of FrontPageTech.com, the report claims that Apple has given some of its employees' access to this technology and that they have been asked to test the new Face ID array with their iPhone 12.

The use of this new tech on the iPhone 12 is being handled through an external solution that fits like a case around the current-gen iPhones once it is connected. The report explains that once set, this case enables the iPhone 12 to use the array as the default source for biometric authentication. If this is indeed true, it may give Apple the chance to test the new Face ID hardware on a large scale much before the iPhone 13 is launched. As we explained above, this tech could be quite revolutionary as it will reportedly allow users to wear masks and glasses.

Apart from this, there's other information available about the device. As per leaks, iPhone 13 should feature the same design language and a similar feature set as the iPhone 12 launched in 2020. Reports also suggest there will be camera improvements, a faster processor and a bigger battery to make the phone a better offering than the iPhone 12. Apart from this, Apple may add an in-display fingerprint sensor to the iPhone 13. This would of course be complemented by the company's Face ID system which will act as an alternate biometric authentication method.

The iPhone 13 is expected to be powered by the A15 Bionic chipset. This will be the successor to the current generation A14 Bionic chipset. This chipset is likely to provide a boost in performance and also improve efficiency. For cameras, it is predicted that the iPhone 13 will come with larger sensors and improved computational algorithms. All iPhone 13 models are also set to be equipped with the sensor-shift stabilization feature -- something that is currently only available on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE to be powered by Snapdragon 888 Google Play Console listing reveals

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G has reportedly been spotted on the Google Play Console, revealing some key specifications of the upcoming ‘Fan Edition’ phone. The listing is for the 6GB RAM variant and confirms Snapdragon 888 chipset as was earlier hinted by Geekbench results.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G specifications

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G will allegedly include a 6.4-inch Full HD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The image on the Google Play Console page shows a flat-screen with an Infinity-O notch and reasonably narrow bezels on all sides.

3D renders that leaked recently showcased the same design for the back as on other Galaxy S21 series phones, where the protruding camera module blends into the side frame. This time, however, Samsung could be using a single colour tone for the back, and we are hoping that would look more elegant.

The triple-cameras setup on the rear is rumoured to include a 32MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide snapper, and an 8MP telephoto camera.

Since even the base Galaxy S21 comes with a plastic back, the Galaxy S21 FE isn’t likely to use glass for the back either. The USB Type-C port and speaker grill are present at the bottom, and the fingerprint sensor is likely to be positioned underneath the screen. Other reports claim a 4500mAh battery housed within the phone.

Samsung’s FE models aim to make the right compromises to drag down the flagship experience to a more accessible price point where more consumers can participate. Samsung recently launched its foldable flagships for the year and the Galaxy S21 FE should be the last of flagship phones from the brand for the current year.
