Meta joins forces with the CBSE to offer courses and train students on Augmented and Virtual reality

It looks like the Central Board of Secondary Education has joined hands with Meta (formerly known as Facebook) on an ambitious AR/VR project. The company will train around more than a crore students as well as 10 lakh teachers in new educational methods involving Augmented Reality as well as Virtual Reality. Courses such as Digital Safety and online wellbeing will be offered under the curriculum. This marks a significant step for Meta as this is a rare occasion where the company is able to partner with a government educational institute for a brand-new, tech-focused curriculum.

Meta partners with CBSE on AR and VR courses

In a statement to the media at the Fuel for India 2021 event, Mark Zuckerberg said, “We are investing in other growing areas like education and commerce through Unacademy and Meesho, which are important use cases as we think about the future that we are building. We want to continue to partner in all of these areas as we accelerate the development of the fundamental technologies, the social platforms, and creative tools that are going to be necessary to bring the metaverse to life.”

In fact, we also recently reported that Meta was looking at taking an active role in the protection of women on its platform. The company has made it a priority to make the platform safer for women and give them the ability to freely access information without the threat of harassment and such. The company also launched its Women’s Safety Hub. The hub will be available in 12 Indian languages including Hindi and other regional languages.

Intel says that we do not have enough computing power to sustain an immersive metaverse

Much of the energy this year has been focused on how the next generation of the internet will be built and controlled. Intel today talked about Metaverse, the upcoming connected virtual world that everyone wants a piece of, and acknowledged that it “may be the next major platform in computing after the world wide web and mobile”. However, it also cautioned that we still have a long way to go before we get to the utopian dream.

Intel says that we don’t have nearly the computing power that’s needed to drive such a virtual experience. In fact, we are not even close.

“We need several orders of magnitude more powerful computing capability, accessible at much lower latencies across a multitude of device form factors. To enable these capabilities at scale, the entire plumbing of the internet will need major upgrades,” notes Raja Koduri, Senior vice president, General manager of the Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group at Intel in an editorial.

Koduri appositely explains that it’s even a challenge to put two people in a convincing virtual space. “Consider what is required to put two individuals in a social setting in an entirely virtual environment: convincing and detailed avatars with realistic clothing, hair and skin tones – all rendered in real-time and based on sensor data capturing real-world 3D objects, gestures, audio and much more; data transfer at super-high bandwidths and extremely low latencies; and a persistent model of the environment, which may contain both real and simulated elements. Now, imagine solving this problem at scale – for hundreds of millions of users simultaneously”

“Truly persistent and immersive computing, at scale and accessible by billions of humans in real-time, will require even more: a 1,000-times increase in computational efficiency from today’s state of the art.”

Software and algorithm improvements will have to pitch in, and hopefully, we will have enough to sustain an immersive metaverse experience in about 5 years.

Of course, enough computing power isn’t the only hurdle before we do establish a meaningful metaverse. Arguably another important aspect will be to implement standards that will ensure that the metaverse is decentralized and to perhaps regulate the forays of Big Tech.

Battlegrounds Mobile India bans over 14 lakh accounts for cheating in just under a week

Krafton has been hard at work trying to get rid of hackers and cheaters in Battlegrounds Mobile India. The developers recently announced that they banned just over 1.4 lakh accounts in less than a week. In it’s official channel, Krafton noted that it banned 1,42,766 accounts in the period between December 6 and December 12. In fact, the developers have even resorted to calling out the hackers and the list of banned accounts can be accessed here.

Battlegrounds Mobile India: Hackers

Hackers have been a constant source of issues in not only Battlegrounds Mobile India, but also PUBG: New State. However, it seems like a constant uphill battle for Krafton as the number of account resorting to hacking or cheating just does not seem to let up. IN fact, last month, the developers announced that they had banned over two million accounts in just over a month. Thankfully, it seems like Krafton is doing its bit and not letting up when it comes to dealing with cheaters. Krafton noted that it has taken four steps to try and curb cheating and will be doubling down on the same. This includes the introduction of stronger cheat detection and banning mechanisms. It also notes that while initially it used to hand out temporary bans for first time offenders, it will now issue permabans. Further, the developers will now manually verify and ban any account that used to promote illegal programs among high-rankers in real-time. Finally, it will be working with YouTube to block channels that promote the use of illegal programs.

In related news, Krafton notes that data transfer between PUBG: Mobile and Battlegrounds Mobile India will no longer be available after December 31, 2021, 23:59:59 (UTC). This is roughly January 1, 2022, 5:30am IST.

After this date, players will no longer be able to transfer their progress and purchased in-game items from PUBG: Mobile to Battlegrounds Mobile India. As such, any player who has not linked the accounts yet should do so as soon as possible.
