Call of Duty Mobile World Championship announced with over 2 million in prizes

Activision is bringing back its Call of Duty Mobile (CODM) World Championship and the competition starts on March 31, 2022. It is said to be designed for players of all skill levels and interested people can sign up to compete in multiple stages leading to the finale. There will be in-game achievements and rewards in the way for you to play and win. The total prize pool awaiting you is a whopping $2 million US dollars.

Announcing the event, Activision Mobile Division VP, Matt Lewis said, “Our massive, worldwide community of players continues to drive the team’s passion to deliver an epic Call of Duty: Mobile experience now and in the future. With all-new rewards and a prize pool of over $2 million dollars, everyone is invited to enjoy this year’s championships and we look forward to seeing who will be crowned victorious later this year.”

There will be multiple stages of the CODM World Championship: Namely, stage 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Activision notes that anybody interested can take part in the competition by just signing up at the Call of Duty website. Those who do will receive an all-new frame and calling card.

The championship will be held regionally across the world.

Stage One begins from March 31 and will have four qualifier rounds going all the way up to April 24, 2022.

To enter Stage Two, you must win 10 ranked multiplayer matches with a total of 60 points. The 2nd stage commences from May 12, 2022. You can check out the rest of the roadmap above.

Laptop Buying Guide: How to pick the right AMD Ryzen powered gaming laptop

AMD Ryzen powered laptops offer some of the best value for performance anyone can get. But choosing the right one can become difficult, especially with so many options available on the market. It is difficult to determine whether a particular laptop is suitable for gaming, video editing, or general usage just by looking at its specifications. 

We feel that this handy buying guide about AMD Ryzen Powered laptops will help you make the right decision for your hard-earned money. We’ve detailed the available AMD Ryzen laptop CPU models and the also specialized tech they use to deliver faster performance in this buying guide. 

AMD Ryzen Powered Laptop Processors

The important thing to note about AMD Ryzen laptop processors is that a lot of them are not just CPUs but instead APUs, short for Accelerated Processing Unit. The APU consists of both the CPU cores and the graphics chip onto a single die. 

Most AMD Ryzen powered laptops nowadays are available in 4-core, 6-core, or an 8-core configuration. At present, two AMD Ryzen series laptop CPUs are available, one from the 5000 series another one from the 6000 series. The main difference between these two is that the former is based on the 7nm process while the latter is based on the 6nm node. 

The difference in the manufacturing process also grants them different capabilities. For general purposes, the Ryzen 6000 series is relatively faster and more efficient than the Ryzen 5000 laptop processors. However, the latter is more widely available and available at a better price point. 

Remember I told you that AMD processors are APUs. Well, as it turns out, the RDNA 2 graphics chip on the Ryzen 6000 series processors is easily capable of running modern games quite well. The Radeon graphics chip in the Ryzen 5000 series APUs is also pretty good, but as you can imagine, not as performance-oriented as the newer series.

Another important term you need to remember while shopping for such laptops is “AMD Advantage.” Whenever a laptop has a Ryzen 5000 series or newer processor paired with a Radeon 6000 series GPU, the result is faster performance in all games thanks to AMD’s Smart Access Memory feature. 

Now that you know all about the AMD Ryzen processors, let’s dive in deep into different processor types and help you find the right one. 

AMD Ryzen 6-core Laptops

In the market, you can find three main 6-core AMD Ryzen 5 5000 series processors namely - 5600U, 5600HS, and 5600H. As mentioned, all these processors have 6-cores and they also have 12-threads. In terms of specifics, the 5600U has a base TDP of 15W, the 5600HS has a base TDP of 35W, and the 5600H has a base TDP of 45W. All three processors also feature 7-core AMD Radeon Graphics. In terms of general power metrics, you can pretty easily see that the 5600U is at the bottom, the 5600H is at the top and the 5600HS is somewhere in the middle. 

Meanwhile, you can also find three Ryzen 5 6000 series APUs - 6600U, 6600HS, and 6600H. The Ryzen 5 6600U has a configurable base TDP of 15-28W, the 6600HS has a default TDP of 35W. Meanwhile, the higher end the 6600H has a base TDP of 45W. Being an APU, the Ryzen 5 6000 series chips also feature a Radeon 660M integrated GPU. 

Moreover, these Ryzen 5 6000 series processors also have built-in support for DDR5 and LPDDR5 RAM. Which is generally faster than the DDR4 you’ll find on most laptops these days.

For most modern-day applications like MS Office, Google Chrome, Teams, Docs, etc, a 6-core processor is pretty sufficient. Pair such a processor with a discreet GPU from AMD or Nvidia and you can also play demanding games like AC Valhalla, Metro Exodus, and more on it at a pretty smooth frame rate. 

The AMD Ryzen processor is also pretty capable in terms of productivity. If your workflow primarily involves editing 1080p footage then an AMD Ryzen 6-core processor is pretty good for you. 

Most gaming laptops in this range offer either an Nvidia RTX 3050 or a 3060 paired with the AMD Ryzen 5 5000 series processor. On some budget gaming laptops, you can also find AMD Radeon RX 5500M as the discreet GPU and it performs better than the Nvidia GTX 1650. Our suggestion would be to go with the Nvidia RTX 3050 if you want a decently specced gaming laptop, as such a laptop will be relatively affordable and its 4GB GDDR6 VRAM is perfect for playing eSports titles and modern games at 1080p in low-medium settings but not for much else. 

For a mid-range gaming laptop, our suggestion would be to go with the Nvidia RTX 3060, preferably due to its 6GB GDDR6 VRAM, which can run modern games like AC: Valhalla at high graphics settings without losing performance.

Make sure that the laptop has at least 8GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD storage, and a 1080p display with 300nits of brightness and 15.6-inch screen real estate.

AMD Ryzen 8-Core Laptops

AMD offers two series of 8-core processors - Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9. These processors are further categorized based on whether they belong to the AMD Ryzen 5000 series or 6000 series.

The Ryzen 7 5000 series processors mainly include three chips - 5800U, 5800H, and 5800HS. As the nomenclature suggests, the 5800U is the entry-level unit featuring 8-core, 16-threads, and a base TDP of 15W. The Ryzen 7 5800H is the top-spec processor in this class and has a default TDP of 45W. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 7 5800HS is a medium-spec unit with a default TDP of 35W.

Moving on, we have the Ryzen 9 5000 series processors, that have 8-core, 16-threads but offer a much higher boost clock. The Ryzen 9 5000 series include - 5900HS, 5900HX, 5980HS, and 5980HX. 

Both the 5900HS and 5900HX offer a boost clock of up to 4.6GHz. But the former has a 3.0GHz of the base clock and 35W TDP compared to the 3.3GHz base frequency and 45W+ TDP of the latter. The Ryzen 9 5980HS and 5980HX also come in similar configurations 

All these APUs come with AMD Radeon Graphics that can run many games at low-medium settings in 1080p resolution. However, if you can pair the processor with a discreet Nvidia GPU then you can take advantage of the high-performance cores and play games at a high frame rate with good graphics. 

The AMD Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 powered laptops are usually paired with one of these GPUs - Nvidia RTX 3060, 3070, 3080, AMD Radeon RX 6600M, and 6800M. 

As mentioned earlier, the AMD Advantage laptops will offer extra performance in all games thanks to the patented Smart Access Memory tech. Which is also an added feature. 

Most high-end laptops will feature either an Nvidia RTX 3070, 3080, or an AMD Radeon RX 6800M paired with a Ryzen 9 5000 series processor. These machines are geared for ultra-high performance 1440p gaming and live streaming thanks to a powerful CPU and GPU combination. 

Meanwhile, an Nvidia RTX 3060 or an AMD Radeon RX 6600M lie in the premium-budget segment. These GPUs are usually paired with either a Ryzen 7 or a Ryzen 9. Such laptops are built for 1080p gaming and streaming. 

In addition to gaming, these laptops also offer great performance during 4k video editing, photo editing, and other productivity-related tasks. 

Such laptops come with either 16GB or 32GB RAM, at least 1TB SSD, a QHD or FHD display along with a plethora of I/O ports for seamless connectivity.

AMD Buying Guide Brief Overview

It can be hard to digest so much technical jargon so here’s a quick rundown. Budget buyers looking for an AMD Ryzen powered laptop should opt for the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U. Such a laptop will probably not feature a dedicated GPU.

Moving up the ladder you’ll find the Ryzen 5 5600H and 5600HS processors. They’re usually paired with an RTX 3050, 3060, a GTX 1650, and in some cases a Radeon RX 5500M. For a budget gaming machine, we’d advise you to go with the AMD Ryzen 5 5600H/5600HS and a Radeon RX 5500M combo. For a medium spec machine, going with the RTX 3050 is a good option and if you’re willing to future proof your laptop then opting for an Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU would be the best choice. 

When it comes to choosing high-end machines, you have two options from AMD - a Ryzen 7 and a Ryzen 9. Both offer 8-core, 16-threads but the Ryzen 9 is relatively powerful. Usually, an AMD Ryzen 7 will be paired with an RTX 3060, a 3070, a 3080, or an AMD Radeon RX 6600M. 

On the other hand, you’ll find a Ryzen 9 processor paired with an RTX 3070, a 3080, an AMD Radeon RX 6600M, and 6800M. These laptops allow you to play games, create content and do pretty much anything you’d like to without breaking a sweat.

iQOO Z6 5G design and specs teased ahead of its launch on March 16

iQOO India is all set to unveil the iQOO Z6 5G on March 16, 2022, and ahead of it, the company itself has teased the design, key specs, price, and availability. In its recent tweet, iQOO shows off the rear side of the phone and shares more details on its dedicated Amazon landing page. From there, we learn that iQOO Z6 will be a 5G phone running on a 6nm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor along with a 5-layer liquid cooling system.

It is a 5G phone as given in its name, but we don’t know about the supported iQOO Z6 5G bands. What we know though is that the 5G modem will be part of its Snapdragon 695 chipset. This is a 6nm architecture-based chip backed by LPDDR4x RAM and a 1445 mm² 5-layer liquid cooling system. iQOO claims this can dissipate surface temperature by 3℃ and internal heat at CPU junction by 10℃.

As for the performance in terms of synthetic benchmarks, you are given an Antutu score of 410563. The company also draws a comparison with the score by Snapdragon 750G, which by the way is shown to be only 392543.

Now, that performance will be something you experience through the iQOO Z6’s 120Hz display. It is a 6.58-inch panel with FHD+ resolution, DCI-P3 ‘wide’ color coverage. Although it is said to have a 90.61% screen-to-body ratio, the leaked renders show it has rather noticeable bezels, especially at the bottom.

Also, the leaks from sources like passionategeekz.com tell us the device will have a 5000mAh battery with 18W charging support, 50+2MP+2MP triple rear camera setup, up to 6GB+128GB memory configuration, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth 5.1, and Android 12 based Funtouch OS 12.

iQOO also vaunts the device will be the “fastest” 5G smartphone in the 15 to 18K segment on Amazon India. So, that should give you a hint of its price and availability in India. The leaks suggest it will be out in Chromatic Blue and Dynamo Black colors.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Review: The iPhone 13 alternative

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is hands-down one of the best premium compact phones in India right now. It’s the right size for daily use and is packed to the brim with features like a bright and gorgeous display, a premium design and capable cameras that are perfect for point-and-shoot photography. While the iPhone 13 (review) offers long-lasting performance that might appeal to power users, the S22 is no slouch either, at least on the Android side of things. It can perform daily tasks with ease which is perfect for the average user.

The Samsung Galaxy series of phones have almost always been at the pinnacle of the Android ecosystem, offering premium features backed by a robust software experience.

This year too, Samsung brings its A-game with the Galaxy S22 series and fixes most of the shortcomings from the last generation. The Galaxy S22 is a perfectly great Android phone with solid build quality, gorgeous display and a super versatile camera setup making it one of the most well-rounded phones from Samsung this year.

In this review of the S22, we compare it to the iPhone 13 (review) and try to find out whether it sets a benchmark for premium Android phones in 2022.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Performance review

Unlike the past few years, this year Samsung has launched the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 version of the S22 series in India which means that you get solid performance across the board, be it in your day-to-day use or intensive gaming. The Galaxy S22 can hold off on its own when it comes to tasks like web browsing, scrolling through social media feeds, playing games, taking pictures or videos.

In my use, I did not come across any major issues with the S22 and its general performance remains solid, going toe-to-toe with its major competitor, the iPhone 13. Both phones have their fair share of pros and cons but what makes them different is the optimizations under the hood along with a tight synergy between hardware and software, where Apple always has an upper hand.

Now, don’t get me wrong, but having used the iPhone 13 for a while now, I can see that the S22 isn’t as fluid even though it has the hardware chops to provide that experience. And the iPhone 13 doesn't even have a high refresh rate display, yet it's ever so slightly smoother. The S22 demonstrates overall solid performance and is generally smooth at all times. But when it comes to intensive tasks like playing a round of BGMI on extreme frame rates, you will witness some frame drops and jitters like I did. While it isn't a complete deal-breaker, people who play these games, sometimes hours at a stretch, could end up being disappointed.

The Galaxy S22 doesn't top the charts in synthetic benchmarks like the iPhone 13, but demonstrates commendable performance that is enough to power through daily tasks and then some. 

In AnTuTu benchmark, the S22 doesn't come close to 1 million points which is something we have been seeing happen with other Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 phones like the Moto Edge 30 Pro and iQOO 9 Pro. It got 872285 on AnTuTu. Similarly in Geekbench and PCMark workload tests, the S22 got good numbers that reflect it can handle your daily tasks with ease.

When it comes to the GPU tests like 3DMark Wildlife and GFXBench, the S22 got decent scores which means that it is perfect for casual gamers. For those looking for sustained gaming performance, there are dedicated gaming phones like the iQOO 9 Pro or even the ROG Phone 5s that are tuned to run intensive games for hours at a stretch.

We used Gamebench metrics to analyse the in-game performance and as per the recorded gameplay, the S22 runs COD Mobile at 90FPS with 99% stability and Asphalt 9 at 30FPS with 98% stability. It runs BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India) in UHD graphics and Ultra frame rates at 40FPS with 100% stability and bumping up the settings to HDR graphics and Extreme frame rates allowed it to run at 51FPS at 99% stability.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is a fairly new chipset and as such, I feel phone makers need to put in more time and effort to better optimize and integrate it with Android 12. In its current state, the Galaxy S22 often gets warm to the touch after just playing a couple of rounds of COD Mobile and especially when recording a 4K video. While it isn't unbearable, it does affect the battery life. Since the profile of the phone is slim and compact, it’s likely that to mitigate thermals, the performance of the S22 is being throttled to ensure that it doesn’t go overboard, ensuring longevity.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Battery Life

Samsung Galaxy S22 is equipped with a smaller battery than the S21, which is a result of its small and light profile. Even then, I managed to get a screen-on time of around 5.5 hours on heavy use. Depending on your use case, you can get a day’s worth of battery life out of the S22 if you do not play games or record videos that much. In our video loop test, the Galaxy S22 lasted for 9 hours and 52 minutes which is a decent score for this battery size. And this was with the brightness turned to the maximum with the adaptive refresh rate enabled. Using a 25W charging adapter, the S22 takes around an hour to fully charge.

One of my pet peeves with Samsung and the S22 here is that it supports 25W fast wired charging which is the same as last year and in no way justifies the premium you are paying for. Interestingly, the S22 Plus gets a faster 45W fast charging support, but the youngest sibling gets the short end of the stick. 

Samsung Galaxy S22 Camera Review

The Galaxy S22 is a great and compact point-and-shoot camera, perfect to capture fleeting moments of your life. It’s essentially the same camera system as on the S22 Plus. The pictures from the main camera are sharp, vibrant and look pleasing to the eye. I tried to capture some samples in a variety of conditions and the results were just beautiful. In daylight, the camera lends a natural depth of field, which looks great in closeups and generally you will be able to get good pictures out of this phone without much effort.

I also had the iPhone 13 handy and surprisingly the results were equally good, if not better. The details, sharpness and HDR processing are good but the shadow regions are not highlighted as much. Now, I get that it’s a bit subjective when it comes to photography, but generally people have grown a likeness towards more vibrant and colourful images over a natural one. And the S22 hands you just that on a platter! The iPhone 13 produces close-to-natural colours. But in my opinion, both phones make equally good-looking pictures.

At night, the pictures were clear and sharper than the iPhone 13, but you will see an influx of noise when pixel-peeping. The iPhone 13 samples have a warm white balance, while the S22 tends to fall towards the cooler spectrum. The night mode brings more clarity but at the cost of more noise. The iPhone 13 pictures in night mode add more sharpness, but the highlights are better processed on the S22.

The ultra-wide camera on the Galaxy S21 produces slightly more saturated pictures than the balanced colour tones on the iPhone 13. But the S21 has seemingly less barrel distortion and ample sharpness in corners. The shadow regions are not highlighted as on the iPhone 13, which is able to maintain exposure levels. At night, the camera on the S22 adds noise but the night mode comes in handy as it reduces noise and increases clarity.

The telephoto camera on the S22 gives you the ability to zoom upto 3x and the results are great. You can also use the telephoto camera for macro photography which is a good addition and the pictures I got were crisp. This is something the iPhone 13 cannot do as the telephoto lens is reserved for the Pro models.

The selfie camera upfront takes close to natural pictures with balanced colours and sharpness. The iPhone 13 selfies have a wider field of view but look more processed.

The Samsung camera app is fairly simple to use and facilitates point-and-shoot photography. You get to shoot in different styles and the Pro mode lets you control every aspect of the shot. One of the coolest additions to the camera on the S22 is Object Eraser which removes people or objects from a picture. It can also erase shadows and reflections, which comes in handy when someone photobombs.

The Galaxy S22 looks and feels great in the hand. It is slightly thinner and lightweight than both the S21 and the iPhone 13. The edges have been rounded-off that give it great ergonomics and the S22 feels solid. I’m not particularly a fan of huge phones and the S22’s size is perfect for daily use as it is comfortable to hold and does not weigh down your pocket too. 

One major difference between the S22 and the S21 is that it has a Gorilla Glass Victus+ glass rear panel and the frame is more durable than before. Samsung sent us the Phantom White colour for this review and it has a matte finish on the back. This handles fingerprints and smudges with ease. The chrome finish of the frame lends an elegant touch and it looks more premium than ever.

Samsung Galaxy S22’s display is a 0.1-inch smaller than the S21, but is the same size as the iPhone 13. It supports upto 120Hz variable refresh rate which can cover between 48-120Hz and is not an LTPO panel like on the S22 Ultra. Regardless, the display is great for daily use and watching videos. The visuals look crisp, bright and colourful at all times while giving you an immersive experience, complimented by the stereo speakers that can get pretty loud.

Samsung claims that the display on S22 offers 1300 nits peak brightness and while that is achievable in lab conditions, it doesn’t mean the display isn’t bright. As per our tests, the display measured around 490 nits of peak brightness in normal mode and around 500-525 nits of peak brightness in High Brightness mode. While the numbers may seem low, the S22’s display can get plenty bright and offers great sunlight legibility. 

Samsung Galaxy S22 Bottom Line

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is hands-down one of the best premium compact phones in India right now. It’s the right size for daily use and is packed to the brim with features like a bright and gorgeous display, a premium design and capable cameras that are perfect for point-and-shoot photography.

While the iPhone 13 offers long-lasting performance that might appeal to power users, the S22 is no slouch either, at least on the Android side of things. It can perform daily tasks with ease which is perfect for the average user.

The cameras on the S22 offer improved photography experience over the last generation and it can hold off on its own in front of the iPhone 13. The telephoto lens is great and lets you zoom into a frame without losing much clarity and makes the camera system all the more powerful. 

If you are looking for a great and compact Android phone, you cannot go wrong with the S22. While the iPhone 13 offers a more refined experience and is a much more secure OS, the S22 brings a great balance of features and software that make it a sweet deal for people who are looking for an iPhone 13 alternative. Apple A16 Bionic might be exclusive to iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

Apple is likely to bring four new iPhone models in 2022. Instead of iPhone 14 mini, this time around, we may get to see an iPhone 14 Max, next in line to the standard iPhone 14. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (Via Macrumors), we could have a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. Not only that, he predicts that only the iPhone 14 Pro variants will sport the new Apple A16 Bionic processor.

That would leave the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Max with a year-old Apple A15 Bionic chipset.

Out of these four new iPhones, only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be equipped with an Apple A16 Bionic chipset. That would be a crucial matter of differentiation between the Pros and regular iPhones.

Besides that, the Pro models may also get LPDDR5 RAM while the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Max would have only LPDDR4x memory. The LPDDR5 is theoretically 1.5x times the speed and 30-percent more efficient than LPDDR4x. Meanwhile, the maximum RAM size would be 6GB only, contrary to earlier rumors that suggested an 8GB option. 

Now, we are still way ahead of the expected September launch event of these iPhones and things may still change.

MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with Apple M2 chip may launch later this year

Apple is reportedly gearing up to introduce the M2-borne MacBook Air and a 13-inch MacBook Pro in 2022. A report from 9to5Mac reveals that the Cupertino-giant is in the advanced stages of development of both these MacBooks. It mentions details about the Apple M2 chip like its codename, on which Apple A Bionic chip it is based, and the likely variants of it. We also get hints of what the company may have in plans for the aforementioned MacBook products going forward.

So, let’s cover them one by one, starting with the chip.

Apple M2 Chip: What’s expected

Apple M2 is said to be codenamed ‘Staten’ and it will apparently be based on the Apple A15 Bionic chip that’s part of the iPhone 13 series and the recently announced iPhone SE.

Design-wise, it may have an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU and it will be a successor to the Apple M1 chip launched in 2020. 

This means it won’t be an upgrade to the M1 Pro, M1 Max, or M1 Ultra. Rather, it may have its own M2 Pro, M2 Max, and M2 Ultra (with 24-core CPU) SKUs. 

With that, we come to the M2 MacBooks.

The latest report claims the MacBook Air (internally called J413) will be powered by M2 and not an updated M1 chip as suggested by Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. It is also expected to sport a redesigned look.

Then there is the 13-inch MacBook Pro (internally called J493) which will also supposedly get the M2 treatment. However, unlike the MacBook Air, this one will retain the design of its precursor. Also, the rumor has it that Apple is planning to remove the ‘Pro’ surname from this particular model. It will be thence called just MacBook and will mark the entry into Apple’s MacBook lineup. In other words, there will be this 13-inch MacBook, then the upcoming MacBook Air (allegedly more expensive), and then the other MacBook Pro models. 

However, such a rechristening wouldn’t take place this year. At least, that’s what is being foretold at this point. We will let you know if there’s any update to these MacBook plans.
