Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones launched: How does it differ from WH-1000XM4

After a two-year gap, Sony has unveiled the successor to its WH-1000XM4 wireless noise-canceling headphones named Sony WH-1000XM5. While the former was already a class act, the question is how different the XM5 is from the XM4. For starters, there is a revamped design (with some contentious choices), enhanced Active Noise Cancelation (ANC), smaller audio drivers, the same battery life claim, LDAC codec support, and a bigger carry case.

So, let’s take a deeper look at the new Sony flagship headphones.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Specs and Features

Sony WH-1000XM4 features

Sony has armed the XM5 with an 8-microphone setup controlled by V1 and QN1 audio processing chips. Thanks to the new beamforming mic system, Voice Pickup technology, and AI-based Auto NC Optimizer, the company claims improved ANC and better call quality.

With ANC on, the WH-1000XM5 can run up to 30 hours of music playback, and with it off, expect 40 hours of runtime. There is USB-C power delivery with fast charging capability (3 hours from a 3 min top-up). The XM4 meanwhile, was rated for 5 hours use with 10 minutes of charging and with ANC off, they could only pull off 38 hours of juice.

The audio side is handled by 30mm drivers, which is smaller than the 40mm unit of XM4, but Sony says it has improved “high-frequency sensitivity for more natural sound quality”.

XM5 also comes with DSEE Extreme upscaling and high-res LDAC codec support with select devices. You also get AAC and SBC, but no aptX.

The other Sony 1000XM5 specifications include Bluetooth 5.2 support, multipoint connectivity, Google Assistant, Alexa support, Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Windows Swift Pair, Touch Controls, Ambient Noise Mode (transparency), wear detection, and Adaptive Sound Control.

All these come packed in a more minimal design consisting of soft-fit leather and a stepless slider band. However, their movements are apparently a bit stilted compared to the Sony WH-1000XM4. If you wear them around the neck, they don’t fold down flat like the predecessor. And if you try to fold them up, they won’t. Hence, the bigger carry case. The case looks cool and has magnetic housing for the charging cable and audio cable (for wired connection).

Sony has priced the WH-1000XM5 at around $400 (~₹30,940), which is $50 more than the launch price of the WH-1000XM4. The new Sony wireless headphones will be available from the end of May in select markets. You can pick it in Silver and Black colors.

Mark Zuckerberg exhibits the Mixed Reality capabilities of Metas Project Cambria headset

Meta has about four AR and four VR products in the pipeline, some of which are scheduled to launch this year. One of those gizmos is the so-called Project Cambria headset. Although primarily tagged a VR wearable, a new teaser by none other than Mark Zuckerberg gives us a picture of what to expect when it comes to Meta’s Mixed Reality use cases with this Cambria headset. But before we get into the video, know that the actual hardware is not revealed in it.

Mark Zuckerberg takes you into Mixed Reality through Cambria

          View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mark Zuckerberg (@zuck)

Mark kicks off the video by saying, “I want to share a little about Project Cambria, the code name for our high-end VR headset that’s coming out later this year.” He doesn’t show the headset on video. All we get is a black-colored headset that’s blurred to conceal its identity on camera.

The treat of the video is thus the software experiences it teases. For instance, it shows an app called The World Beyond based on the company’s Presence Platform. As Mark puts it, the app blends the physical and virtual worlds together. Differently put, a mix of AR and VR for a Mixed Reality (MR) experience.

Project Cambria does this using advanced cameras and full-color passthrough. So, unlike the company’s Quest 2 which can only project virtual thingies into the real-world setting in a rather grainy and grayish way, this one can deliver colors. The quality is still like a “decent quality home video” only, as per Protocol’s Janko Roettgers who had managed to check out the Cambria headset and run the same demo. But besides the appeal of those colors, Mark claims the high-res sensors in the Cambria would be able to discern the various real-world objects and find a spot for the AR projection.

You should be able to test The World Beyond on Quest through App Lab, and sooner than later on this yet-to-be unveiled Project Cambria headset. But as Mark points out, the use cases can also be things like virtual office environments and augmented reality workstations, or working out with a holographic instructor. Since Meta is releasing the Presence Platform to developers, we could expect more such interesting applications in the future.

Zuckerberg Metaverse

Now, while on one hand, we are getting promises of an Extended Reality and Metaverse, the Facebook owner is reportedly scaling back costs in its Reality Labs division. It has faced the reality that it can’t do it all and may have to “slow the pace”. So, only time can tell if the world beyond promised by Mark proves to be great, for both the company and it’s users.

The beta is finally out and one big name missing from the list is Samsung, although it may be only a matter of time before it  joins the extensive list of eligible devices.
