Apple rolls out iOS 155 and iPadOS 155: Heres all that is new

Apple has officially updated its iPhone and iPad devices to iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5 respectively. This is the fifth major update to iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 since their initial release back in September 2021. The 15.5 update comes merely two months after the launch of iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4. Naturally, the update isn’t a massive one but it does pack a few key features.

According to Apple’s support page, iOS 15.5 includes enhancements to features such as Apple Cash, Apple Podcasts, and other bug fixes. As for iPadOS, the support page indicates improvements to Apple Podcasts and bug fixes. Let’s delve into the changes and fixes in detail.

iOS 15.5: How to install and all you need to know

iOS 15.5 can be downloaded for iPhone models launched after the iPhone 6S and the iPod Touch Gen 7. The software is free and can is available via an OTA (over the air) update. To download the new software, head over to Settings > General > Software Update.

First off, the iOS 15.5 update enables Apple Cash customers to send and request money from their Apple Cash Card via the Wallet app. Secondly, the Apple Podcasts app includes a brand new setting to limit the episodes that are stored on your device. It also automatically deletes older episodes.

The update also fixes some bugs. An issue where home automation would sometimes fail when triggered by people arriving or leaving has been fixed. The update also fixed an issue that would cause the iPhone SE (3rd Gen) to shut down unexpectedly. The update also consists of 25 security fixes, none of which have been actively exploited so far, according to Apple.

iPadOS 15.5: How to install and all you need to know

The iPadOS 15.5 update is available to all iPad Pro models, iPad Air 2 and later devices, iPad Gen 5 and later devices, and iPad Mini 4 and later devices. In order to download the new software, follow the same process as mentioned in the sub-head above.

iPadOS 15.5 includes the same setting introduced in iOS 15.5 to Apple Podcasts, where a limit has been set for the number of episodes stored on your iPad and older ones get deleted automatically. Additionally, a few bug fixes have also been done but the support doesn’t mention the specific bugs. Similar to iOS 15.5, this update also consists of security fixes, so it is best to install the update as soon as possible.

Users with eligible iPhones and iPads should be notified about the update; and if not, you can use the method mentioned above to manually update your device. Apple has reportedly already begun working on iOS 16, so this could be the last major update to the iOS and iPadOS 15 operating systems. iOS 16 is expected to launch on June 6 at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

PM Modi launches 5G testbed, talks 6G roll-out in India at TRAIs silver jubilee

Speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need for the country to develop indigenous capabilities in 5G and 6G telecom technologies.

Addressing the nation, PM Modi explained that his government is fully committed to pushing the country forward by adopting the latest telecom standards in the years to come. He also urged the telecom industry to expedite the process of adoption of 5G technology. He said, "It's estimated that in the coming time, 5G will contribute $450bn to the Indian economy... This technology will make things easy, and also generate employment opportunities.

Interestingly, PM Modi also spoke about how the government, TRAI, and other key players are also looking forward, and are already working on bringing 6G services to India. He said, "By the end of this decade, we should be able to launch 6G services, our task force is working on it."

While he did not explain the progress made so far in this regard, his remark that indigenous 6G services could be rolled out in the country by the end of the decade does hint that work has already been started on the project.

PM Modi launches 5G testbed in India

At the event, PM Modi also launched a 5G testbed, which has been developed as a multi-institute collaborative project. This 5G testbed has been created as a result of the work of a total of eight premiere institutes led by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.

The other institutes that participated in the project include IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER) and Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT).

It's interesting to note that this project has been developed at the cost of more than Rs 220 crore, and once operational will enable a supportive ecosystem for Indian industry and startups which will help them validate their products, prototypes, solutions and algorithms in 5G and next-generation technologies.

WhatsApp status updates to get rich link previews

WhatsApp is reportedly working on enabling rich previews for links you share on your WhatsApp statuses. Up till now, on Android, you had at least some preview of the link while on WhatsApp for iOS, there’s no preview. Just the simple plaintext of the link. However, now with this new rich link feature, if done right, you will be able to know what you are clicking on.

The report comes from WABetaInfo and here’s how the feature is expected to work —

WhatsApp rich status link preview: How it works

WhatsApp rich link preview on iOS

In the screenshot image above, there is a juxtaposition of the present and the upcoming WhatsApp link representations.

On the left side, you can see only the link. But, on the right side, you see the link preview image, the site name, and a brief description of the site. This is how the WhatsApp rich link status previews would appear. The screenshots are from the WhatsApp beta for iOS, where it is currently in testing.

WhatsApp Rich Link Preview on Desktop

The source has managed to share a screengrab of this feature working on the WhatsApp Web interface.

So, it shouldn’t be long before it makes its way to the Android side too.

Now, for it work properly, while sharing the link on WhatsApp Status, you must give it a few seconds to generate the rich link preview. If you post the link in haste, then that may go as a plain link only. So, something to keep in mind.
