Hackers lifting fingerprints from your Android phone

Your fingerprints on your Android phone might not be as safe as you think. Recently, two security researchers at the annual Black Hat conference revealed that the fingerprint scanner on your Android devices is quite vulnerable. Researchers Tao Wei and Yulong Zhong of FireEye Inc., showed that Hackers can remotely lift fingerprints from Android devices. The duo talked about how design flaws in TrustZone, the ARM technology that comes embedded in modern day smartphones, will simply let a 'sensor spying attack' harvest a user fingerprints.

According to ZDNet, the duo confirmed that phones like the HTC One Max and the Samsung’s Galaxy S5, are vulnerable to spy attacks as the device makers haven't locked down the sensor completely. Sensors on these devices are guarded on a system level rather than a root level, hence, rooted devices stand at a greater risk of being hacked. The researchers revealed that once a hack is placed on a certain phone, the hacker can continue to collect the fingerprint data of anyone who uses the sensor.

Currently, countries like US and some regions of Europe, allow payments via fingerprint authentication, these are also vulnerable to attack and hackers can easily bypass the security to simply buy stuff, or just transfer funds from the users account. Moreover fingerprints are also used for various important documents such as passports, immigration documents, criminal records, etc., making it a far more dangerous proposition if your fingerprint sensor gets compromised.

It was also mentioned that this vulnerability also affects some laptops that come with fingerprint sensors. The duo has alerted various vendors about this vulnerability and since then, some patches have rolled out for the same. However, if you are using an iPhone, you are quite safe as hackers won’t be able get the fingerprint image unless they have a crypto key for the fingerprint sensor data.

YouTubes Crackdown On Comment Spam Check Out Whats New

YouTube has announced a set of new features that would allow better filtering of spam comments on the videos posted on the platform. This announcement came via a blogpost where YouTube elaborated on the new measures that will be in place from now on.

During the month of November last year, YouTube removed the dislike counter from videos. This move, according to the platform, was made in a bid to remove to reduce the false perception built around certain pieces of content based on the dislikes it received. The community of creators and consumers on the platform received that move with a mixed pile of emotions. Some people who were the victims of the abuse of the dislike button rejoiced, while others got busy developing extensions and installing them to get back the dislike counter.

As per the blog post through which the updates were announced, it was told that YouTube channels would not be allowed to remove subscriber counts. This move is aimed at helping in the identification of impersonator channels that were active on the platform. YouTube clarified its stance on this move by saying, “We made this decision to help our community be safer as a whole, but we recognize not all creators using this option are bad actors. We know some creators prefer to hide their subs count as they try to grow….”

Additionally, more comment moderation options were also introduced in the YouTube studio. Users can now set their comment moderation settings to ‘Increased strictness’ inside the ‘Held for review’ tab. This setting will basically increase the level of automatic moderation and monitoring of their channel’s comments section by YouTube. The platform also announced that the number of special characters that would be allowed to be put in a channel name will now be limited too. This means that channels like ” ¥ouⓉube✅” will be required to change their names.

It remains to be seen how well these changes help combat the problem of spam comments on the videos. This is because when we read between the lines, there are some things whose effectiveness will only be proven after a longer period of implementation. It will be interesting to see how well the YouTube algorithm can detect and remove spam comments from the videos and the number of false positives that are caught too!

That’s way more than the present limit of 1 hour, 8 minutes, and 16 seconds. So, now that the permitted duration is longer, you should be getting plenty of time to walk back on messages you don’t want to be sent anymore.

WABetaInfo tells us that the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.22.15.8 has got an extended time frame for deleting messages for everyone within a span of 2 days and 12 hours. 

The blog post notes, “The previous limit was 1 hour, 8 minutes, and 16 seconds. We just tried to delete a message sent yesterday and it worked!”

We also learn that the instant messaging app is also coming up with the feature to delete any WhatsApp message in groups if you’re a group admin. This is likely to be rolled out as a future WhatsApp update.

Adidas FIFA World Cup 2022 In Qatar Will Have Semi-Automatic Offside Tracking

So after four years, the FIFA World Cup is going to be held in the fall. It will take place in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December 2022. 32 teams will be taking part, from 5 confederations. This year’s game is the first of its kind for its use of Semi-Automated Offside Tracking (SOAT). This system uses the real-time data from a motion sensor embedded in the ball and also analyzes the player's movements to guage when offside happens. 

Here’s how that works

FIFA World Cup 2022 And Semi-Automatic Offside Tracking

In a press announcement, FIFA explains the SAOT will consist of “12 dedicated tracking cameras mounted underneath the roof of the stadium to track the ball and up to 29 data points of each individual player, 50 times per second, calculating their exact position on the pitch. The 29 collected data points include all limbs and extremities that are relevant for making offside calls”.

It further notes that Al Rihla, Adidas’ official match ball for Qatar 2022 will also have a built-in motion sensor that will transmit real-time data about players’ position, and the kick point.  

Both of these limb and ball data will be sent to video match officials inside the video operation room as an alert whenever an offside is committed. This data is first validated and quickly intimated to the on-field referee.

Along with raising an offside warning, the SAOT result is presented on the stadium screens as a 3D animation. 

This technology was previously tested at  FIFA Arab Cup 2021 and the FIFA Club World Cup 2021.
