WhatsApp Head Will Cathcart Warns Users Against Modified Apps, Says They Contain Malware

WhatsApp is an incredibly popular app, so it doesn't come as a surprise that it's frequently targeted by scammers and hackers. One of the many ways WhatsApp users are targeted are through links that lead to fraudulent websites. Another is through malware. To that end, head of WhatsApp Will Cathart has advised against using modified versions of the app as they hide malware within the apps which can steal user data from their phones. While he can guarantee privacy and security for WhatsApp, he cannot say the same about these third party apps.

Reminder to @WhatsApp users that downloading a fake or modified version of WhatsApp is never a good idea. These apps sound harmless but they may work around WhatsApp privacy and security guarantees. A thread:

— Will Cathcart (@wcathcart) July 11, 2022 WhatsApp Head warns users

In a series of tweets, he also gave an example, mentioning one such third-party version of WhatsApp called 'Hey WhatsApp' by developer 'HeyMods'. The malware was found within the app, but the app promised several new features for WhatsApp, which is what enticed users to fall for the scam in the first place.

Recently our security team discovered hidden malware within apps – offered outside of Google Play - from a developer called “HeyMods” that included "Hey WhatsApp" and others.

— Will Cathcart (@wcathcart) July 11, 2022

WhatsApp has done its part and reported the same to Google, which in turn released an update to Google Play Protect on Android. Play Protect is a program that's supposed to check apps and devices for malware and deactivate or delete suspicious apps.

Cathcart continued that the company would continue to monitor and report such third-party apps as they explore legal options to prevent such apps from being available to users in the first place.

The OnePlus 10T 5G will reportedly be launching in India very soon. The upcoming smartphone was spotted on the 3C (Compulsory Certification of China) website and the listing confirms that a 160 W fast charging adapter will be shipped with it. The device was also recently spotted on OnePlus’ Indian website suggesting an impending launch.

OnePlus 10T 160 W fast charging support

The OnePlus 10T is listed with the model number PGP110 on the 3C website. The listing also shows an Oppo charging chapter with 160 W fast charging support. While the listing shows 160 W fast charging, a previous leak suggested that the phone would support 150 W fast charging. So, the phone could support 150 W fast charging but be bundled with a 160 W adapter. Something similar happened with the OnePlus 10R which supported slower charging than what its adapter is capable of.

The screenshot above from the 3C website shows the OnePlus 10T (PGP110) with 160 W fast charging (20VDC, 8A Max). The charging adapter’s model number is listed as VCK8HACH. According to a report by Nashville Chatter, the OnePlus 10T has bagged the 3C Certification. The device is expected to debut in China this month. As reported before, the device could launch in India any time between July 25 and August 1.

OnePlus 10T rumoured specifications

The OnePlus 10T is set to be the company’s first device with 16 GB LPDDR5 RAM. The device will reportedly come with up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. The smartphone is expected to house a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate.

Powering the device will likely be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and the phone is expected to house triple rear cameras. The primary shooter is rumoured to be a 50-megapixel camera paired alongside an 8-megapixel ultrawide shooter and a 2-megapixel lens (depth or macro). According to reports, the phone is likely to feature a 4,800 mAh battery with 150 W fast charging support. However, the charging adapter is a 160 W brick.

iPhone 14 Series Launch Date: What We Know

According to a report by iHacktu iLeaks, the iPhone 14 series of smartphones will launch on September 13 this year. The report from the tipster also suggests that pre-orders for the iPhone 14 series will begin on September 16, just three days after the launch. The tipster also divulged that the device will go on sale starting September 23.

Nevertheless, do take these dates with a grain of salt since nothing has been confirmed from Apple’s end so far. Apple usually launches new iPhones in September every year with the devices starting to ship later in the month, which matches the tipster’s claims.

According to several leaks and reports, Apple will reportedly launch the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus/Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max this year. The Mini has been dropped from what reports suggests. The iPhone Pro models this year will reportedly ship with a notch-less design with an all new pill-shaped cutout for the selfie camera and FaceID sensor. The non-Pro models will continue shipping with the notch, as per reports.

The tech giant may also launch the Apple Watch Series 8 and the new AirPods Pro during the event in September. Reports also suggest that the company may launch a new rugged extreme sports edition Apple Watch dubbed the Apple Watch Series 8 Pro. We may also see a new SE debut during this event in September.

iPhone 14 Series Cases Leaked

Tipster DuanRui took to Twitter to post an image of the cases for the iPhone 14 2022 lineup. He first uploaded the image to Weibo, following which we posted it on Twitter as well. The cases show the sizes of all four devices in the lineup. The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro will feature similarly-sized displays – possibly 6.1-inches – while the larger iPhone 14 Plus/Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max models will reportedly come with 6.7-inch displays.

According to the side-by-side image comparison posted by the tipster on Weibo, the iPhone 14 Pro Max will have a larger camera module as compared to the 13 Pro Max. The Pro models are rumoured to get a new 48-megapixel sensor which may be causing the size bump.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series To Reportedly Ditch Exynos Chips Altogether In Favour Of Qualcomm

For a while now, Samsung has been using its own in-house Exynos chipsets – alongside Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs – in its Galaxy series of smartphones. However, if the latest report is to be believed, Samsung could be ditching Exynos chips altogether for its upcoming Galaxy S23 lineup. This would mark the end of an era with Samsung foregoing the practice of producing the same handset with two variants using region-specific chipsets.

(1/3) 1. Qualcomm will likely be the sole processor supplier for Samsung Galaxy S23 (vs. 70% shipment proportion for S22) thanks to the next flagship 5G chip SM8550 made by TSMC 4nm.

— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) July 8, 2022

As per renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Samsung is likely to power the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 series with Qualcomm chipsets alone. This would be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC – which will make its debut in November 2022. In the past, the company would use both Snapdragon and Exynos SoCs in its flagship phones and the model you got would depend on where you lived.

Samsung Galaxy S23 series processor

As mentioned earlier, industry insider Ming-Chi Kuo has said that Qualcomm will be the sole SoC supplier for the Galaxy S23 series of smartphones. In effect, the flagship Samsung Galaxy S-series devices will no longer be region-dependent from 2023. The Galaxy S23 phones will reportedly house the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC in all markets. This Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (SM8550) is expected to make its debut in November this year and we could start seeing devices adopt the SoC as early as December 2022.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series is expected to launch in January or February 2023 though. The fact that the S23 series will likely only house Qualcomm SoCs could be met with a sigh of relief by those in the European and Asian markets. This is because the Exynos variants of the Galaxy S series of phones have had a reputation of always being inferior to their Snapdragon counterparts, in terms of performance and battery life.

Kuo also suggested that the S23 series may not adopt the Exynos 2300 chipsets made by Samsung since it can’t compete with the SM8550 “in all aspects”. He also added that this decision could further cement Qualcomm’s dominance in the Android smartphone market.

Despite this, some reports still claim that Samsung’s flagship in-house SoC – the Exynos 2300 – is still being developed with the codename Quadra. There is no confirmation so far, but we could possibly see this chipset in Samsung’s Flip and Fold series of foldable smartphones.
