ISRO gearing up for lift-off of Small Satellite Launch Vehicle on 7 August

Chennai, Aug 4 (IANS) India's newest rocket, the 34 metre tall and weighing 120 ton Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) will lift off from the first launch pad at the Sriharikota rocket port on August 7 at 9.18 a.m. on its maiden flight, said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Thursday.

The three staged SSLV-Developmental 1 (SSLV-D1) is primarily powered by solid fuel (total 99.2 ton) and also has a velocity trimming module (VTM) powered by 0.05 ton of liquid fuel for precise injection of satellites.

The rocket with a maximum luggage carrying capacity of 500 kg will be carrying an earth observation satellite-02 (EOS-02) formerly known as Microsatellite-2A weighing about 145 kg.

Just over 12 minutes into its flight, the SSLV-D1 will put into orbit the EOS-2 satellite.

Prior to that, the rocket will coast - moving because of the momentum and not powered by its engines - twice for about four minutes.

The piggyback luggage will be the eight kg AZAADISAT built by 750 students of government schools facilitated by SpaceKidz India.

According to ISRO, the SSLV is a ready to transfer rocket with modular and unified systems with standard interfaces for production by the industry.

The SSLV design drivers are low cost, low turnaround time, flexibility in accommodating multiple satellites, launch-on-demand feasibility, minimal launch infrastructure requirements and others, ISRO said.

The commercial arm of ISRO, NewSpace India Ltd plans to transfer the SSLV technology for production in the private sector.

The Indian space agency said the EOS-02 satellite is an experimental optical imaging satellite with high spatial resolution. The objective is to realise and fly an experimental imaging satellite with short turnaround time and showcase launch on demand capability.

According to ISRO, the new technologies realised for the microsat series of spacecrafts include payloads with a common fore optics and metallic primary mirror realised with the limited mass and volume of Microsat Bus.

With the new included in its product lineup, ISRO will have three rockets - Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle and SSLV.

Musk-Twitter Battle: Elon Musks Responses To Be Made Public

If you haven’t lived under a rock for the last few months, you would have heard about the Musk-Twitter acquisition saga. The whole process of Elon Musk, who has developed a cult-like following around him on the internet, asking to buy off Twitter, and then things falling apart, has developed to be nothing short of a film script. Now, adding another link to this never-ending chain is the news that Musk’s response to Twitter’s lawsuit could be made public soon.

To set some context for the uninitiated, since March earlier this year, which was the time when Musk first floated the proposals and almost bought the microblogging platform, sealing the deal at $44 billion, and then he attempted to back out.

All of this, while being in the news for several other reasons, Musk brought the world to a standstill. After Musk’s withdrawal from the deal, Twitter filed a lawsuit against him. During the proceedings of the lawsuit, a judge ruled on Wednesday that Musk's responses are to be made public by Friday.

I made an offer https://t.co/VvreuPMeLu

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 14, 2022 Twitter wants to review Musk’s arguments

Musk’s attorneys initially proposed filing a public version of their answer and counterclaims on Wednesday. However, Twitter’s attorneys were against it and called for more time to review the drafts from Twitter’s side. That is what prevented Musk’s side from making their side of the arguments and claims public.

Commenting on this matter, one of Twitter’s attorneys, Kevin Shannon, wrote, “Few cases attract as much public interest as this one, and Twitter is mindful of this court's commitment to ensuring maximum public access to its proceedings.” Shannon added, “Twitter has no interest in proposing any more redactions to defendants' responsive pleading than necessary.”

With things developing by the hour, it will be interesting to see where things go on from now, and what claims Musk’s side makes.

Indian Government Backtracks On Data Protection Bill 2019 Leaving Citizens Privacy In The Lurch

The Indian Government on Wednesday withdrew the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019, two years and seven months after it was introduced in the parliament. The Data Protection Bill was supposed to usher in a new era of data protection and privacy laws in India for Indian citizens as currently there are no common regulations to protect the people’s privacy even though the Supreme Court of India has granted the Right to Privacy as a fundamental right of citizens.

As per an official statement issued by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, the Personal Data Protection Bill was being reviewed by a Joint Parliamentary Committee which suggested over 81 amendments and 12 major recommendations to the bill. It was therefore decided to withdraw the Data Protection Bill altogether and work on a new bill that encapsulates all the amendments suggested by the JPC.

“Personal Data Protection Bill has been withdrawn because the JCP recommended 81 amendments in a bill of 99 sections. Above that it made 12 major recommendations. Therefore the bill has been withdrawn and a new bill will be presented for public consultation,” Ashwini tweeted out last evening after announcing the development.

It has been close to 10 years since the A.P. Shah on Privacy, 5 years since the Puttaswamy Judgement and 4 years since the Srikrishna Committee’s report — they all signal urgency for a data protection law and surveillance reforms. Each day lost, causes more injury and harm. 3/3

— Apar (@apar1984) August 3, 2022

The IT Minister also told Reuters that the government has already started working on the new bill which is “in good advanced stages” and that he expects to present it in the budget session of Parliament in 2023.

The Personal Data Protection Bill proposed regulations on the processing, storage and transfer of personal data across the different sectors and empowered users with more control over their private data. This had raised some concerns with the Big Tech companies like Google, Meta and more as it could have incurred increased costs due to provisions such as data localization. While privacy advocates were concerned about the power it granted the Central Government such as the provision to exempt any government agency from the data protection laws in the interest of national security.

It remains to be seen how the new data protection bill takes shape and whether it will be robust enough to protect the privacy of over 1.38 billion people.
