Microsoft Office now accepts handwriting-to-text by Apple Pencil

Tech giant Microsoft has released a new beta version of its Office app for iPad with support for the Apple Pencil's handwriting-to-text feature Scribble.

The feature allows you to insert and edit the text in a Word document, PowerPoint presentation, or Excel spreadsheet using the Apple Pencil, with handwriting automatically converted into typed text, reports AppleInsider. After enabling the Scribble feature in Settings and then Apple Pencil, the feature can be used by tapping the Scribble Pen button under the Draw tab in version 2.64 of the Office app.

The feature can be tested now by members of the Office Insider programme via TestFlight, and the update will likely be released on the App Store for all users in the coming weeks.

Scribble was added in iPadOS 14 for any iPad that supports the original or second-generation Apple Pencil, including any iPad Pro, the third-generation iPad Air and newer, the fifth-generation iPad mini and newer, and the sixth-generation iPad and newer.

Microsoft's unified Office app with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel gained iPad compatibility in February 2021 and is also available for the iPhone.

Using Apple AirTags for allegedly stalking ex-girlfriend puts a man behind bars

A man has been jailed for nine weeks for allegedly stalking after planting a covert Apple AirTag tracker on his ex-girlfriend's car, media reports say. According to DailyMail, Christopher Paul Trotman, 41, harassed his ex with constant phone calls and questions, before ordering an AirTag on Amazon and gluing it to her rear bumper to track her every move, a court heard. The Apple device uses a Bluetooth signal so a linked-up iPhone can find its location. Swansea Crown Court heard how Trotman of Gwynedd Avenue, Townhill, Swansea had been in a relationship with the victim for over 10 years before it broke down in August 2020, with the woman describing his 'controlling' behaviour during their time together. Prosecutor Tom Scapens said Trotman would bombard the woman with questions about her whereabouts after their break-up and even offered her money to quit her pub job, because he could not cope with her talking to other men. Then, in March this year, the victim bought a new iPhone and received a notification when she got in her car asking if she wanted to connect to an Apple AirTag. At the time, she did not know what it meant and ignored it. Later that month, she received a text from Trotman accusing her of sleeping with other men, the report said. He also asked her if she had enjoyed a night out on Swansea's Penderry Road that night, but she had no idea how he knew where she had been. His former lover discovered what he had done after her daughter also started getting notifications on her phone about connecting to an AirTag. A search of Trotman's Amazon account showed he had bought several Apple tags the previous month and the victim decided to examine her car. She found one of the tracking devices glued in a cavity under the rear bumper. The police were contacted and the AirTag was handed over.

Elon Musk envisions a self-sustaining city on Mars in 20 years

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said that he hopes for a self-sustaining city on the Red Planet in 20 years' time, as his space company prepares Starship to take people and cargo to the moon, Mars and beyond. Musk said in a tweet: "I hope there is a self-sustaining city on Mars in 20 years!" Last month, the world's richest man said he was optimistic that "humanity will reach Mars in your lifetime". "Without a common goal, humanity will fight itself. The Moon brought us together in 1969, Mars can do that in the future," Musk had said. The Tesla CEO had stated that making life multiplanetary will help back up the ecosystems on Earth and added that apart from humans no other species can transport life to Mars. Referring to Biblical patriarch Noah who built an Ark that survived the great flood on Earth, Musk said his Starship models will be "modern Noah's Arks", that can save "life from a calamity on Earth". SpaceX's Starship consists of a giant first-stage booster called Super Heavy and a 165-foot-tall (50 metres) upper-stage spacecraft known as Starship. Both elements are designed to be fully reusable, and both will be powered by SpaceX's next-generation Raptor engines, 33 for Super Heavy and six for Starship. Last week, it was reported that the much-awaited first orbital test flight of the Starship vehicle will not lift off this month as it has not yet received the necessary launch clearance. Earlier, the launch was scheduled for July and was shifted to August later. On August 2, Musk said that a successful orbital flight is probably "between 1 and 12 months from now." According to a radio-spectrum licence application that the company filed with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), SpaceX is targeting a six-month window that opens on September 1 for the highly anticipated mission.

Uber Rewards to be discontinued soon: Know details here

Ride-hailing platform Uber is closing down its loyalty programme, Uber Rewards, with users being urged to sign up for the Uber One subscription to get regular Uber and Uber Eats discounts. Launched in 2018, Uber Rewards is a free programme that lets you rack points for every dollar you spend when hitching a ride or ordering food through Uber and Uber Eats, reports The Verge. You can then use these points to earn discounts on future rides or deliveries. The more points you earn, the better perks you get -- earning 7,500 points. However, Uber is not offering a replacement for the programme, and there is no another way to consistently earn perks and discounts unless you pay for an Uber One subscription, which Uber launched as a replacement for Eats Pass last year. A $9.99/month (or $49.99/year) subscription comes with perks like free food deliveries, up to 10 per cent off of "eligible" Uber Eats orders, and 5 per cent off on rides from top-rated drivers.

YouTube Channel Store for streaming services reportedly in the works

Google-owned YouTube is working on to launch an online store like Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video to let users subscribe to other streaming services and the new platform could be available as early as this fall. According to a report in Wall Street Journal, the YouTube 'Channel Store' will allow consumers to choose streaming services through the main YouTube app. The company is already in talks with entertainment companies about participating in the YouTube marketplace. The YouTube online store "has been in the works for at least 18 months". YouTube TV already has this capability for HBO, AMC+, Showtime, and many others. "YouTube is discussing splitting subscription revenue with streaming partners, although the terms may vary widely for each partner," the report mentioned. The pitch is that the new YouTube channel store would offer great marketing for streaming services because "consumers could watch trailers of shows or movies free on YouTube and then easily pay to subscribe to the service". YouTube in 2020 for the first time discussed launching an online streaming video store. Walmart is also planning to add streaming services as a new perk to its membership programme. Netflix and other streaming services will be part of Verizon's new Plus Play subscription manager.

Hogwarts Legacy will launch on February 10, 2023, for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox, and PC. A launch date for Nintendo Switch is not yet decided and will be revealed soon. “Our team is excited for you to play, but we need more time to give you the best gaming experience”, reads the tweet from the Hogwarts Legacy Twitter handle. The first time it was announced that the game would be launched in the year 2020, that was delayed by Warner Bros and rescheduled to be launched around Christmas 2022, but it is now again revised to February 2023

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action game in which your job is to define your character, explore various magical locales, learn and cast spells, discover beasts and continue the journey to become the wizard you were destined to be. It's a single-player game, and there is no word on any multiplayer elements either.

After a long delay, fans are excited and are hoping that the game will be launched on the given date, this time.
