A smartphone app to detect Covid-19 from peoples voices is under work: How it works

A smartphone app can accurately detect Covid-19 infection in people's voices with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), researchers revealed on Monday. The team claimed that the app is more accurate than several antigen tests and is cheap, quick and easy to use, which means it can be used in low-income countries where PCR tests are expensive and/or difficult to distribute. "The promising results suggest that simple voice recordings and fine-tuned AI algorithms can potentially achieve high precision in determining which patients have Covid-19 infection," said Wafaa Aljbawi, a researcher at the Institute of Data Science, Maastricht University, The Netherlands. "Moreover, they enable remote, virtual testing and have a turnaround time of less than a minute. They could be used, for example, at the entry points for large gatherings, enabling rapid screening of the population," she said at the European Respiratory Society International Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Covid-19 infection usually affects the upper respiratory track and vocal cords, leading to changes in a person's voice. Aljbawi and her supervisors decided to investigate if it was possible to use AI to analyse voices in order to detect Covid-19. They used data from the University of Cambridge's crowd-sourcing Covid-19 Sounds App that contains 893 audio samples from 4,352 healthy and unhealthy participants, 308 of whom had tested positive for Covid-19. The researchers used a voice analysis technique called Mel-spectrogram analysis, which identifies different voice features such as loudness, power and variation over time. "In order to distinguish the voice of Covid-19 patients from those who did not have the disease, we built different artificial intelligence models and evaluated which one worked best at classifying the Covid-19 cases," Aljbawi added. They found that one model called Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) out-performed the other models. LSTM is based on neural networks, which mimic the way the human brain operates and recognises the underlying relationships in data. Its overall accuracy was 89 per cent, its ability to correctly detect positive cases was 89 per cent, and its ability to correctly identify negative cases was 83 per cent. "These results show a significant improvement in the accuracy of diagnosing Covid-19 compared to state-of-the-art tests such as the lateral flow test," said Aljbawi. The researchers say that their results need to be validated with large numbers.

Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is set to showcase the second generation of its AirPods Pro this week that will offer several upgrades, including the next generation H1 processor. The company, that will unveil the latest iPhones and other devices at its event on September 7, will update a model that first went on sale in October 2019, reports Apple tracker Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. "I reported last year that new AirPods Pro would arrive in 2022, and now I'm told that Wednesday will be their big unveiling," he was quoted as saying in his newsletter. The AirPods Pro 2 may also come with Apple's Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) or Bluetooth 5.2 support. The AirPods Pro 2 may also support in-ear wing tip design, along with a charging case that emits a sound when searching for it with Apple's Find My app. The second-generation Apple AirPods Pro are not likely to include any fitness tracking features and won't arrive with temperature or heart rate detection this year. Kuo predicted that the AirPods Pro 2 charging case will still feature a Lightning port for charging, dashing hopes for a switchover to USB-C this year.

Apple could add the classic battery percentage indicator on iPhone 14 Pro: Heres how

As Apple is preparing to unveil its next-generation iPhones, a new report has indicated that the tech giant's iPhone 14 Pro may revive the battery percentage indicator. The iPhone 14 Pro's status bar will purportedly see changes due to the increased amount of usable space at the top of the display, moving the cellular signal indicator to the left and re-implementing the full-width battery status bar on the Lock Screen, reports MacRumors. As per the report, iOS 16's Lock Screen will directly interact with the 'iPhone 14 Pro's always-on display, featuring integration with notifications and the depth effect and colours of wallpapers. Meanwhile, recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that a new ultra-wide camera with a bigger sensor for enhanced low light sensitivity would be included in the iPhone 14 series Pro models. He had also said that iPhone 14 might come with its long-rumoured satellite communication feature that is likely to be used in emergencies for texting or voice services. The company's flagship product launch event for this year will take place on September 7. The next-generation iPhone 14, to be produced in India around two months after its China production, will see four models -- a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a new 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and a 6.7 iPhone 14 Pro Max, according to reports.

Yet another Google Pixel 7 Pro unboxing video is here: Heres what you get to see

As the launch date approaches, tech giant Google's upcoming flagship smartphone Pixel 7 Pro has reportedly surfaced in a brief unboxing video posted on Facebook. The smartphone was taken from a box in the video, published by the Bangladeshi technology retailer Gadgetfull BD. The device showed a sleek black exterior with the Google 'G' logo imprinted on the back, reports The Verge. The tech giant first teased the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro at I/O in May, and is likely to launch the device next month alongside the Pixel Watch. The smartphone in the video matches up with Google's official renders, complete with the aluminum camera bar with two cutouts for the sensors, the report said. It even features what looks like Google Pixel's official animation sequence when it's booted up, followed by a device setup screen, it added. Meanwhile, a recent report said that the tech giant is working on a foldable smartphone -- Pixel Fold -- that is likely to feature a 'full screen' interior with an ultra-micro-hole camera set on the phone's frame. The proposed Pixel foldable's back is more in line with the upcoming Pixel 7, suggesting it will sport a camera visor with holes cut out for the camera sensors, citing a tipster.
