NASA eyes Sep 23 for Artemis next launch opportunity

New York, Sep 9 (IANS) NASA has announced that it is considering two dates, September 23 or September 27, to attempt the launching of Artemis I into the space.

Artemis I is NASA's uncrewed flight test which will provide a foundation for human exploration in deep space and demonstrate NASA's commitment and capability to extend human existence to the Moon and beyond.

On September 3, NASA attempted to launch Artemis I, however, it was called off after detecting a liquid hydrogen leak. The team is trying to work through a leaky fuel problem with the rocket, called the Space Launch System or SLS.

While the rocket is still on the Launch Pad, engineers are repairing the area where the leak was detected.

They have constructed a tent-like enclosure around the work area to protect the hardware and teams from environmental conditions.

Teams will check the new seals under cryogenic, or supercold, conditions in which the rocket's core stage and interim cryogenic propulsion stage will be loaded with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen to validate the repair under the conditions it would experience on launch day.

Meanwhile, NASA has submitted a request to the Eastern Range for an extension of the current testing requirement for the flight termination system.

"NASA is respecting the range's processes for review of the request, and the agency continues to provide detailed information to support a range decision," the US space agency said in a statement.

It is also evaluating and adjusting launch opportunities and alternate dates based on progress at the pad and to align with other planned activities, including DART's planned impact with an asteroid, the West Coast launch of a government payload, and the launch of Crew-5 to the International Space Station.

Microsoft to help create more personalised home screen experience for Xbox users

San Francisco, Sep 9 (IANS) Tech giant Microsoft has announced that it is rolling out new experiments to learn how to create a more personalised home screen experience for Xbox users.

The company said that it is focused on making it faster and easier for users to play the games they love and find their next favourite game.

"We know the Xbox homepage is where our gamers spend a lot of their time, and it is a space that is very personal. We also know we can always be listening and learning how we can do better here while keeping your experience fast and familiar," Ivy Krislov, Senior Product Manager Lead, Xbox, said in a blogpost.

The company said that starting this week, a random subset of Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring will see layout, design, and ease of access changes as we experiment with different approaches.

"In addition, we are exploring options for new game channels and collections when you scroll down that include content that's curated for you based on things like the games you have played or how to make the most out of your Game Pass subscription," Krislov said.

The key update in this first round of preview updates is that the new "Jump back in" row gives users quick access to their most recently played games and apps.

Users can easily access essential system apps like Settings, Store, Search and My Games and Apps with their own dedicated tiles on Xbox Home.

"We want to ensure this experience is the best it can be, and we know getting it right will take some time which is why we will be rolling it out slowly and iterating throughout the process," Krislov said.

"With your input, we are looking forward to launching this new, better Home experience in 2023. Please share your feedback and be patient as we add, remove, and change features to optimize the experience," Krislov added.

The platform is announcing updates to make educational content more accessible and interactive for learners while helping learning creators thrive on YouTube.

"To improve the YouTube experience in educational environments, we are launching YouTube Player for Education -- a new YouTube embedded player that shows content on commonly used education apps without distractions like ads, external links or recommendations," Jonathan Katzman, Director of Product Management, YouTube Learning, said in a blogpost.

USB-C to A16 Bionic chip: iPhone 14 didnt include these new features

During their “Far Out” event, Apple went out and announced something for everyone who’s a part of their ecosystem. For the audio enthusiasts, there was the new AirPods Pro 2. For the smartphone aficionados, there was the usual suspect, the new iPhone 14 lineup. And for the ones who love to go out and about in the wilderness, there were the new Apple Watches, with the Ultra variant being the star of the show.

All of the newly announced products, including the iPhones, came with features that everyone’s been harping about on the internet. However, there were some things in the iPhones that we feel Apple skipped out on. The non-Pro iPhones were the biggest losers. So, here’s our list of three key features that we feel should have been there on the iPhone 14 lineup that Apple announced on September 7.

Apple iPhone 14 – No USB-C

The topic of Apple’s resentment to include a USB-C charging and data transfer port has been debated to death. Every year amongst all the leaks, the biggest one remains to be the inclusion of a USB-C port. However, this time around, the hopes were higher than before. Everything pointed towards Apple finally breaking down and ditching their beloved lightning port in favour of the more universally appealing USB-C port.

The most prominent reason was the recent legislation passed by the EU, which would require all personal electronic devices to have a USB-C charging port. Everyone thought that Apple would break down. But they didn’t. They went ahead and put in the lightning port, knowing they would soon have to leave that port behind.

The second reason why everyone thought that this year’s iPhone lineup would have USB-C was the fact that literally every other handheld computing device that Apple sells, apart  from the base model iPad, has a USB-C port. Anyone remotely connected to the industry guessed that Apple might go the iPad route with the iPhones and ship the Pro models with USB-C while retaining the lightning port on the non-Pro phones.

However, it looks like none of it was enough to push Tim Cook and Co. to include a much-awaited USB-C port in their iPhones. The lightning port is slow in every respect and just old at this point. At this point, given the fact that they already have removed the sim tray in US iPhones, it looks more likely that they will announce a port-less iPhone the next time around.

Apple iPhone 14 – Where’s the ProMotion?

We are talking about the non-Pro iPhone 14 here. Both the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus lack the higher refresh rate ProMotion display, which has already been a feature on the Pro models of last year.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro

In today’s market, it is hard to imagine a phone being sold for almost ₹80,000 and still lacking a feature as basic as a high refresh rate screen. It is not like Apple has no clue about high refresh rate displays. They already included it in last year’s iPhone 13 Pro models. So, given that they were carrying over the processor, which is clearly capable of handling a high refresh rate panel, they could have very well included at least a 75 Hz display on the non-Pro phones of this year. But, they didn’t, and no one was impressed by this move.

Apple iPhone 14 – Why the older chip?

Continuing on the topic of older generation iPhones and the transfer of their tech into the latest gen devices, let’s talk about the one thing that Apple did transfer over, which no one wanted. It is the processor. The non-Pro iPhones this year come equipped with the last-gen A15 Bionic processor, which was launched with the iPhone 13.

Apple iPhone bionic chip Why?

No matter how powerful the processor might be, it makes no sense, especially given the pattern iPhones have been following in terms of processor upgrades, for Apple to go with a last-gen processor on a newer device. Well, Apple did it. So anyone looking to upgrade will have to deal with it. The jury is still out on whether the new base iPhones are worth upgrading to or not. However, on paper, it looks like Apple may have missed the trick with this one. Especially given the other two things that are even more important additions if they would have been included in the new phones.

You can now meet Apple Co-founder Steve Jobs at his first-ever online archive

San Francisco, Sep 8 (IANS) As Apple co-founder late Steve Jobs' 11th death anniversary inches closer, his friends and family have launched the first-ever Steve Jobs Archive online with his quotes, video/audio addresses and more.

Laurene Powell Jobs, his wife, launched the online archive at Vox Media's Code conference in the US on Wednesday.

"While we do have some artefacts and some actual real material, the archive is much more about ideas," she was quoted as saying.

The archive starts with a poetic email Steve Jobs sent to himself about his admiration for humanity.

"I did not invent the transistor, the microprocessor, object-oriented programming, or most of the technology I work with. I love and admire my species, living and dead, and am totally dependent on them for my life and well-being," he wrote.

The online archive also has his famous 2005 commencement address at Stanford University in the US, along with other video and audio addresses.

"With respect for the past and excitement for the future, the Steve Jobs Archive offers people the tools and opportunities to make their own contribution," according to the website.

"We are building programmes, fellowships, collections, and partnerships that reflect Steve's values and carry his sense of possibility forward," it added.

The archive will "act as a repository of historical materials relating to Steve, some of which have never before been made public".

Steve Jobs worked closely with legendary designer Jony Ive to develop a line of products that had larger cultural ramifications, beginning with Apple Store, App Store (iOS), iMac, iPad, iPod, iPhone, iTunes, and iTunes Store.

In 2003, Steve Jobs was diagnosed with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour.

He died of respiratory arrest related to the tumour on October 5, 2011, at the age of 56.

In 2022, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
